Chapter 1

1. What is a peer-to-peer network and what is a client/server network? Which one is more common? A
peer-to-peer network is a network in which computer systems are connected to each other through the
internet in which files can be shared in-between them without the need of a central server with P2P
software installed. A client/server network is when one big centralized computer or server is a hub to a lot
of lot less powerful computers that can run programs and access data stored on the server.

2. List and describe four different types of networks. (LAN)- Local Area Network- A network that connects
devices over a short distance. Typically owned or controlled by a single person. (WAN)- Wide Area
Network- A spread out collection of (LAN) networks in which a network device called a router connects
these (LAN) networks to the Wide Area Netowrk. (WLAN)- Wireless Local Area Network- A (WLAN)
network based on wireless technology. (MAN)- Metropolitan Area Network- A network larger than a (LAN)
network and smaller than a (WAN) network something like a city, usually owned or operated by a
government body or large corporation.

3. What is the difference between an intranet and an extranet? An intranet is an inter-connected private
network which is like the internet but can only be seen by the people within the business to share
information about the business to employees about stuff such as procedures or new product ideas. An
extranet is similar but is used by businesses and belonging to an organization which works just like the
internet but has some sort of firewall or such around it that allows only who they want to use it with the
use of a username or password of some sort. Used to share information with vendors, suppliers,
customers, or other businesses about products or information.

4. What are four common ways that a user might connect to the Internet? Cable connection, Dial-up
connection, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), or a T1 line.

5. What is a converged network? A single network that can carry data, voice and video traffic all at one
time.

6. What is QoS and how can it be provided? QoS is Quality of Service, feature of a router where it lets
more important traffic past first.

7. Give four examples of common security threats to networks. Malware, Computer virus, Trojan horse,
and spyware.

8. What is fault tolerance and how can it be provided? The property that lets a system to keep working in
the event of a failure in one its components. Can be provided by software or embedded in the hardware
