*subject tells who or what the sentence is about. * predicate, or verb, tells about the subject.

EX: Mrs. Sherman .went to school.


*simple subject tells what or whom the sentence is about. EX: Mrs. Sherman, my teacher, went to school.
*complete subject tells about the WHOLE subject of the sentence EX: Mrs. Sherman, my teacher, went to school.
*simple predicate tells about the Subjectjust the basics EX: Mrs. Sherman, my teacher, went to school.
* complete predicate tells everything that goes with the predicate. EX: Mrs. Sherman, my teacher, went to school.
*compound subject - more than one subject mentioned in the sentence
EX: Mrs. Sherman and Mr. Crawford went to school.
*compound predicate - more than one predicate mentioned in the sentence
EX: Mrs. Sherman and Mr. Crawford went to school and taught.
*coordinating conjunctions join two words or sentences together., For , And , Nor , But , Or , Yet , So
Types of Sentences
*simple sentence - can stand alone and expresses a complete thought. A simple sentence only has to contain a
subject and a predicate. A simple sentence can also be called an independent clause.
EX: Some people like French fries.
*dependant/subordinate clause - a Sentence Fragment that is connected to an Independent Clause. It can not
stand alone or express a complete thought.
EX: Some people like French fries, even though I cant stand them.
*complex sentences join a dependent and an independent clause (Use Commas to ensure that the sentences are
clear.)
EX: Some people like French fries, even though I cant stand them.
* compound sentence - consists of two sentences (independent clauses) joined together by FANBOYS or a
SEMICOLON. (Semicolons are used to connect sentences also.)
EX: John went to the store, and he bought some apples.
John went to the store; he bought some apples.
3 Types of Sentence Problems
* Fragments - Does not make sense. Is missing a subject or a predicate. Cannot stand alone.
EX: Walking down by the muddy river (no subject )
Alice, my next door neighbor and best friend (no predicate)
*Run-ons - connects two sentences together without using FANBOYS or a SEMICOLON.
EX: Andy saw a wild dog it almost attacked him
* Comma Splice - uses only a comma to separate two sentences (it is supposed to be a comma and a FANBOYS)
EX: She is a really nice person, she reminds me of my mother.
EX: Jamie realized that he had forgot his gun, while watching the geese fly overhead.
