Chinese Whispers and Puzzle

Introduction:
These games are to teach students about the importance of two aspects, listening and
speaking. It is very important for students to master those skills in order to convey a
particular idea effectively. The Chinese Whisper game will teach the proper ways to
transmit a message to the listener. Moreover, the Picture Puzzle will be a great patterning
activity that will create a strong foundation of reading, Mathematics and logic skills. From
these games, students can be exposed to Learning through Play method in classroom.
Age : 7 9 years old
Organization : Whole class, Groups
Time limit : 1 hour
Purpose:
i. To prepare students in order to face challenge of speaking comprehensibly and
mastering pronunciation.
Students from non-English speaking background are facing great trouble in
learning English as a second language.
They could not even pass a simple message in English language.
The low volume during whispering will be essential to help student pronounce
each word properly and clearly.
Students will become confident and brave to talk in English especially during
a game.
ii. To create a Student-Centred class
Students involve in all the activities with full freedom.
They can be involved in a group discussion without any involvement from
the teacher.
Students will be given a chance to express their choice and voice.
Students also will learn to think creatively and critically to solve a problem.
iii. Create a happy classroom environment
Fun games will be a fantastic choice to re-energize students.
Students will give 100% focus and attention to the lesson carried out.
Helps to get rid of loss of interest among students.
Active involvement of students will result in the success of the learning
outcome.
Materials:
Envelope, Laptop, Slides, Picture puzzle

Procedure:
1. First, 20 students will be placed in a group of 5 students.
2. So, there will be 4 groups altogether.
3. Each group will line up, so that they can whisper to their immediate neighbours.
4. A story will be broken into 4 parts.
5. The judge will give the first part to the first player.
6. The first player will say the first part of the story to the neighbour until it reaches the
last player.
7. These steps will be repeated for the other 3 parts of the story.
8. When all done, each group will involve in a group discussion about the short story.
9. Then, each group will be asked to solve a picture puzzle related to the story.
10. The picture puzzle is the plot of the story such as exposition, rising action, climax,
falling action and resolution.
11. The teacher will tell the actual story and arrange the puzzle correctly.
12. The teacher will choose a student and tell whole story to the class.

Justification:
1. Back to Basics (Literary Skills)
This activity improves the listening and speaking aspects of students.
2. Learning as fun, meaningful and purposeful
The animated colourful pictures in the puzzle game help students to
understand the whole story in quick matter of time. They also can also
remember the moral value and skill they learn especially in games for a long
period of time.
3. Teaching is Learner-Centred
Full freedom is given to students who are involved in group discussion.
Teachers authority is reduced to make way for students efforts towards
problem solving.
Rewards in the form of gifts and appreciation are given to everyone to
motivate.
4. Character Building
During Chinese Whisper students become aware of the manner of the voice.
Students become more confident to take part in all kinds of learning activity.
Values and attitudes such as spirit of solidarity, tolerance, critical thinking,
and assisting each other toward solution can be implemented among
students.
Students from different race and religion will work together. Hence, teachers
can help to promote unity from the youngest citizens of Malaysia.
