Cost Effective International Roaming
using Mobile VoIP
Leveraging Mobile VoIP as an alternative for GSM roaming
Market Requirements
In the world of mobile telecommunications, roaming is the term used to enable use of a mobile
device in a different location than the local home geographical area (the home network
where the service was registered). Similar to voice roaming, SMS roaming is the process of
sending and/or receiving SMS text messages when travelling abroad.
Demand from consumers for more economical roaming rates is forcing service providers to look
for alternatives to reduce roaming costs, while offering more attractive packages for customers.
In addition, peer-to-peer VoIP services have motivated service providers to avert lost revenue and
customer churn by offering free or inexpensive, toll-bypass VoIP service while abroad.
The current cost to roaming customers is very high. As a result, customers are looking towards
inexpensive alternatives, where most of the roaming revenue goes to the remote operators. By
using Mobile VoIP, customers can make and receive calls or send and receive SMS messages
over IP, while reducing their roaming fees. In addition, customers can keep using the same
number. Local operators can control the price, while enjoying a very fast and proftable ROI, since
all revenues are paid to them.

If mobile operators havent always taken advantage of Voice over IP technology, now is the right
time for them to reap the benefts.

Introducing AudioCodes VMAS Solution
AudioCodes VMAS is a mobile VoIP Solution from AudioCodes comprised of the Client Management
System (CMS) and a variety of mobile soft clients for leading mobile operating systems and
smartphones. VMAS is currently available for such leading smartphones as iPhone/iPod touch,
Nokia, Samsung, HTC and others.
The VMAS client delivers high quality Voice over IP calls via existing mobile phones (using WiFi and
cellular data). This enhances standard mobile networks by taking advantage of widespread data
connectivity available today via WiFi hotspots and cellular data networks.
The solution allows roaming subscribers to initiate voice calls and send text messages (SMS) over a
WiFi connection, via their current mobile handsets at highly cost-effective rates.
Mobile service providers can increase utilization of their network by roaming users by taking
advantage of public WiFi networks or cellular data, saving subscribers international termination costs.
