Making and using dry shampoo
Although nothing makes your hair feel as clean as a good wash, there are
certain times when a dry shampoo can come in handy. If you cannot wash your
hair normally, for instance when camping and no water or bathroom available,
or if you are laid up in bed and your hair needs attention.

People who have very greasy hair also find that should they use a dry shampoo
on the days that they do not "wet-shampoo", their hair looks more acceptable.
Some people find that should they use a scalp toner (scalp stimulator) regularly,
that the sebum flow normalizes to some extent, cutting down on the frequency
that hair needs to be washed. Click here to have a look at some recipes for
home-made scalp stimulating toner.
Making dry shampoo
Take 25 grams of purified talc (available from your pharmacy or drugstore), 4
drops rosemary oil, 4 drops tea tree oil and 4 drops lavender oil.
Using a blender, place the purified talc in it, and with the lid closed, use the small
opening on the top to add the oil drop-by-drop while blending on very low
speed.
When finished, remove the "modified" talc from the blender and place in a
suitable container that closes tightly.
When you need to apply the dry shampoo, brush about 1 to 2 teaspoons
(depending on hair length) onto and through your hair with a good quality brush.
This should be done over the bath, or a place that is easy to wash the talc away
being brushed from your hair.

Final hair wash rinse
Although the popularity of a final rinse after washing your hair has declined, it
can help to add that extra bit of shine and manageability.

There are a variety of commercial products available, yet some true and tested
home-based recipes still are valuable.
You could simply add a dash of apple cider vinegar or a couple of drops of pure
lemon oil to your final rinse, or you could prepare the following and add it to your
final rinse.
Mix the following together very well and add to your final hair rinse:
4 teaspoons of water,
2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar
3 drops of lemon essential oil.
Add this to your final water rinse and make sure that you rinse your hair well with
it.

Exfoliate your skin with a home made natural facial scrub
When you look in the mirror and you are faced with a dull and dry flaky skin, it
may be time to look at doing some exfoliation to get rid of dead cells clogging
up the top layer of skin to bring the hidden more youthful looking skin to the top.

Younger people with skin problems should take care not to over-exfoliate, as we
have found that those suffering from skin problems think that daily
exfoliating or scrubbing every three or four days, will help to rid their skin from
impurities.
That is unfortunately not true, and over-exfoliating or scrubbing can aggravate
the problem instead or alleviating it, since the skin is irritated instead of being
assisted along to help heal itself.
So - people with a problem skin can exfoliate, but gently and not too often, and
if in doubt, please consult your licensed medical practitioner and/or
dermatologist.
But for those amongst us that are fighting the aging battle (and for those not yet
there) exfoliation of the skin, helps with blood circulation and the removal of the
dead skin cells that can cause it to look dull and dry. Exfoliating can be done
every 14 days, and in some cases weekly.
Although there are various commercial scrubs on the market, we have found
that the following home made scrub is most invigorating to the skin, leaving it rosy
and keenly healthy.
Natural exfoliating scrub with essential oil
Take 2 - 3 teaspoons raw oats (not the pre-cooked type) and crush into smaller
bits either by hand or in a grinder. Mix the dry oats with pure honey and 1/4
teaspoon of apple cider vinegar until it forms a smooth mixture. Add more honey
as needed. Then add 1 drop of basil oil to the mixture.
For a problem skin, you can replace the basil oil with tea tree oil to help the
healing process along.
After washing the face and drying it gently by patting with a towel, apply this
sticky mixture in gentle circular movements. Avoid the eye area. Leave the
mixture on for about 15 minutes and wash off with lots of tepid water.
Although it is a messy skin treatment to perform, the results are excellent and it
costs only pennies to make.

beaten egg white and floral water. Add 1 teaspoon jojoba oil, 1 drop camomile
oil, 1 drop frankincense oil and 1 drop myrrh oil. Mix well to form a paste and
apply.
If you have never used essential oils, and are prone to allergies, we suggest that
you perform a skin patch test before using any of them.

Home made facial toners and astringents (also known as
tonics)
Toners were traditionally necessary to use, to remove the oily residue of facial
cleansers and contained alcohol to facilitate the removal of oily residue, yet
were drying due to the alcohol. With modern chemistry, cleansers are very
seldom oily or greasy, yet toners do have the effect of toning and refining the
skin and need not contain alcohol, since there are no huge amounts of oily
residue to remove.

On this page recipes for home made toners
Toner for dry to normal skin
Toner for oily to normal skin
Toner for normal to sensitive skin
Astringent

Inclusion of certain ingredients, such as witch-hazel, into a toner mixture adds an
astringent quality to it should it be required. Please keep in mind that some
individuals find that witch-hazel is too drying for their skin. In that case, rather just
use the toner with the rosewater.
Simple home made toners can easily be created and the skin can be wiped with
a wetted cotton ball after cleansing.
Method of making home made facial toners
The toners are all made the same way. Place the rosewater base into a clean
glass bottle and add the essential oil of choice. Close the bottle and shake the
mixture vigorously to help disperse the oil. A dispersing agent is normally added in
commercial mixtures, but since this is freshly home made we will exclude it.
Leave the mixture for at least 36 hours before shaking it again vigorously and
then filtering it through a paper coffee filter to remove the larger amount of
essential oil. Re-bottle the filtered toner and remember to shake it before use to
ensure proper distribution of the mixture.

Toner for dry to normal skin
100 ml rosewater, 1 drop camomile oil, 1 drop geranium oil.
Combine, mix and filter all the ingredients as described above.
Toner for oily to normal skin
100 ml rosewater, 1 drop juniper berry, 1 drop rose otto.
Combine, mix and filter all the ingredients as described above.
Toner for normal to sensitive skin
100 ml weak infusion made from chamomile and 1 drop German camomile. The
infusion is made exactly as you would make weak, black and bitter tea. You can
use a good commercial camomile tea if fresh material is not available.
Combine, mix and filter all the ingredients as described above.

Astringent
25 ml witch-hazel, 75 ml rosewater, 1 drop cypress, 2 drops sandalwood.
Combine, mix and filter all the ingredients as described above.

Home made creams and skincare products
A variety of creams can be made at home, ranging from cosmetics, face packs
and skin care to soothing balms and salves to help you achieve a naturally
healthy and younger looking face and skin.

Many people expect any cream or lotion to show overnight effects, but you
need to be patient and let your skin regenerate in order to see the difference -
and the older you get the longer the cycle of regeneration is. On average you
should see results between 28 and 37 days.
Essential oils have various therapeutic properties which add zing to any cream,
and some of them have very specialized properties to help with skin conditions. If
you have never used essential oils, and are prone to allergic reactions, please do
a skin patch test with any new ingredient you use.
Some oils to consider for facial creams would include:
Camomile German
Carrot
Clary sage
Fennel
Frankincense
Geranium
Hyssop
Lavender
Myrrh
Neroli
Palma rosa
Rose
Rosemary
Yarrow
The list above includes oils that have great properties that can be of use to help
fight wrinkles and the traces of ageing.
When selecting essential oils for facial or body creams and lotions, stay away
from sun sensitizing essential oils, as they will cause a problem if you go into the
sun.
Aqueous base cream
If you do not want to get involved with too much mixing, you can make a simple
moisturizer by using a neutral aqueous base cream, obtainable from your
pharmacy, druggist or health shop, and add your desired essential oils to it.
Do not exceed the recommended dilution of essential oil to the base, since more
is not always better, and you could burn your skin with too strong a mixture.
For the proper dilution rates for cream, please click here.
Beeswax and oil cream
Below is the recipe for a richer cream than just an aqueous base cream, but
please note that it should be kept cool and for no longer than six weeks.
Melt 15 g of pure beeswax together with 130 ml sweet almond oil, in a bain-
marie.
o Do not melt the beeswax in a pot on direct heat from a plate on the
stove (electric or gas) since it can burn easily and cause a fire
hazard.
o Another fixed oil can be used instead of the almond oil, although
sweet almond oil does do wonders for the skin.
o Some people are hesitant to use beeswax in skin products, since
they think that it will "block the pores" but when used in a mixture like
this, not only does it do wonders for softening the skin, but will not
cause any problems.
o If you are allergic to bee products, care should be taken when using
it.
While the beeswax is melting, gently warm 50 ml rosewater, or any other floral
water, using the same method as above.
Next start to mix the floral water to the beeswax and oil mixture, mixing it with a
whisk or electric mixer. This should be done slowly and as soon as a quarter of
the water has been added, remove the pot from the bain-marie, and
complete the water addition.
When you have finished adding the water the mixture will start to set, and before
it does mix in 8 drops of your chosen essential oil.

Recipes for perfumes using essential oils

General information
To have a look at our page on creams and lotions, please click here and for

Although we are a site selling essential oils, it must be kept in mind that the use of
synthetic material would be acceptable in certain cases, since some pure
floral absolutes, like rose and jasmine cost thousands of dollars per ounce. You
can also make up mock fragrances - carnation to be made with equal amounts
of black pepper and ylang-ylang with a tad of geranium.
The ideas below are a simple guide for you to get started, but it must be kept in
mind that it is easier to add more essential oils to a blend to make the fragrance
stronger, than it is to dilute the blend in order to tone the fragrance down.
For this reason it is better to rather add too little of an oil, and to top up later if
you are looking for a stronger fragrance.
One cardinal rule you should always follow, is to write down the recipe, as you
are mixing it, as it often happens that a person would prepare a wonderful
fragrance, only to find that they cannot remember the quantities or the oils used
in the mixture.
When mixing your fragrance you should use glass containers, as some plastic
containers and instruments do tend to retain fragrance particles. For mixing the
blend never use a metal object, but rather use a glass rod.
After you have used your mixing equipment, wash very well with a strong soapy
solution, dry, wipe down with alcohol to remove all fragrance traces, wash
again, rinse in clean water and dry for next use.
For storing your mixed fragrances buy blue or amber glass bottles, and if they
have cork stoppers you would need to seal the cork stopper with paraffin wax to
prevent oxidation, and if they are equipped with screw tops make sure that the
tops have liners.
Essential oils are either added to alcohol or an oil base when making perfumes at
home. The alcohol to use is ethanol, but for the sake of ease vodka can be used.
It is best to buy a high quality 100% proof vodka since it has virtually no smell.
The oil base that can be used is jojoba oil - which is really a liquid wax. Jojoba has
excellent keeping properties and does not have a very heavy odor of its own.
The percentage of essential oil used in perfumes is high, and to prevent any
allergic reaction, remember to do a skin patch test if you have never used a
particular oil, and also look at our page on essential oil safety by clicking here.
When blending your perfume or eau de toilette or cologne start with the base
(alcohol/vodka or oil base depending on what you are making) and add the oils
drop by drop.
The classification of perfume, eau de toilette and eau de cologne is based on
the strength of the fragrance it contains and the percentages of essences used.
For a perfume you will use around 15% essential oil, whilst for a lighter eau de
toilette you will use about 4 - 8% essential oil and a yet lighter eau de cologne 1 -
5%.
If you want to work out your percentages, you can work on the premise that 1 ml
is 20 drops. To work out your percentages convert the total of the oil used as well
as the base - be that the alcohol/vodka or jojoba oil - to drops.
If your total drops are, let's say 58 drops, and your base 240 ml (240 x 20 = 4,800
drops) divide the amount of drops by the amount of drops in the base. Using the
above example you will get a result of 0.012 = 1.2% concentrate of oil in the
mixture.
Some of the recipes state that you should mix the blend, bottle, cap and leave
for x amount of days. This is to give the fragrance time to settle and to achieve a
more rounded fragrance.
Old fashioned Eau-de-Cologne
16 drops bergamot
15 drops petitgrain
2 drops orange
15 drops lemon
5 drops lavender
5 drops neroli
10 ml orange flower water
230 ml alcohol/vodka
Place the alcohol/vodka base into your glass mixing container, add the oils in the
order listed and mix well. Bottle, cap and leave the mixture for 4 days and then
add the orange flower water and re-cap. Leave the mixture for at least two
weeks, giving the bottle a gentle shake every day.
'All alive' perfume
4 drops sweet orange
10 drops lemon
6 drops tangerine
8 drops frankincense
5 drops neroli
1 drop myrrh
11 ml alcohol/vodka or
11 ml jojoba oil for a oil based perfume.
Place the base into your mixing container and add the ingredients in the order
listed and mix. Bottle and use. You can reduce the base, but do note your
concentration will then exceed 15%.
Sensual perfume for women
5 drops coriander
6 drops bergamot
4 drops neroli
1 drops jasmine blend
3 drops rose blend
10 ml jojoba oil
Place oil base in mixing container, add oils in the order listed and mix. Bottle, cap
and leave one week before using.
Sensual eau de cologne for men
10 drops lavender
20 drops coriander
22 drops sandalwood
23 drops cedarwood
5 drop frankincense
100 ml alcohol/vodka
Place the alcohol/vodka mixture into your mixing bowl, add the oils in the order
given and mix well.
The above is our humble contribution to fragrance mixing and is really basic. Your
personal taste will determine what you like, and it may be a good idea to look at
our pages on floral notes and blending for more information when blending your
own fragrance.

Cancer, carcinogenesis and essential oils in aromatherapy.
There has been an upsurge in the incidence of various forms of cancer, and the
carcinogenesis (the stimulation of growth of cancerous cells) effect of various
substances are continuously looked at to try and identify any carcinogenic
substances and so help people from steering away from them.

On this page
Carcinogenic oils
Using essential oils when you have cancer
Essential oils to avoid when you have cancer
Essential oils to avoid when you have estrogen (oestrogen) dependant cancers
Essential oils to avoid when you have skin cancers and melanomas

Carcinogenic oils
There are some essential oils that are carcinogenic and have already been
banned from use in aromatherapy as well as for internal usage. The oils in
question are calamus oil (contains asorone), and all oils that contain high
amounts of safrole like sassafras oil which is also found in yellow and brown
camphor.
Other compounds found in essential oils that may be carcinogenic is methyl
chavicol, which is found in basiloil. This statement does not make basil a
dangerous oil, but care should be taken to select the basil oil with the highest
linalool content and lowest methyl chavicol content.
It must however be pointed out that studies showed these oils as carcinogenic
when applied daily in high concentration over a period of months.
Using essential oils when you have cancer
If you have cancer there are some points to keep in mind when using essential
oils and aromatherapy:
Keep massage light, and avoid deep massage over muscles as well as
near the lymph glands.
Do not massage areas that have been irradiated.
Do not massage areas that have skin cancers.
Various writers on health, cancer and medical conditions have compiled lists of
oils which should not be used when you have cancer.
Essential oils to avoid when you have cancer:
Aniseed
Basil
Bay
Clove
Cinnamon
Fennel
Ho leaf
Laurel
Nutmeg
Star anise
Essential oils to avoid when you have estrogen (oestrogen) dependant
cancers:
Aniseed
Citronella
Eucalyptus
Fennel
Lemongrass
Star anise
Verbena
Essential oils to avoid when you have skin cancers and melanomas:
Bergamot
And all sun sensitizing oils.

Heart problems (cardiac problems) and aromatherapy
Although essential oils and aromatherapy can assist to promote good health,
care must be taken when using them with certain existing medical conditions. In
this instance we can look at a person that has a pre-existing condition such as
heart problems (cardiac problems).

Oil to avoid
Any person that has a heart problem should rather avoid peppermint oil being
used in any large amounts for massaging, as it could increase heart pulse - and
in some cases could cause heart palpitations.

When mixing oils for ANY massage please keep to the dilution
directives.
Helpful oil
After cardiac surgery it has been found that a gentle massage with neroli oil to
be very calming, while being a heart tonic and antispasmodic.

Aromatherapy and use of essential oil for older people
Using essential oils in aromatherapy can be a great way of assisting the general
health of elderly people, yet some points have to be kept in mind when mixing
essential oil blends for older people.

Since older people may be frail, it is best to use a lower dilution rate for essential
oils in the carrier oils and due notice must be taken of any medical conditions,
medications taken or illnesses.
To view the suggestions on dilutions please visit our page on dilutions and
also have a look at oils that may be irritants or cause skin sensitivity.
With older people there may be a higher incidence of health problems, so it is
imperative to check the profiles of each essential oil, to ascertain that it is
not contra-indicated for a particular health problem, and that there are no
contra-indications with certain medications.
All the essential oil pages can be accessed from our essential oil index page.
Incapacitated patients
Bed-ridden people or wheelchair-bound can benefit from a gentle
aromatherapy massage, and a selection of oils can be chosen to help alleviate
discomfort and to aid in circulation.
Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy as such, and does not replace any
medical treatment and essential oils should never be taken orally unless so
prescribed by a licensed medical practitioner.

Essential oil and high blood pressure (hypertension) in
aromatherapy
People that suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension) need to monitor their
blood pressure regularly, since various health problems,
like angina, strokes and thrombosis as well as arteriosclerosis, may be caused by this
condition.

Gentle massage using essential oils in aromatherapy can have a most beneficial
effect on high blood pressure, yet there are certain oils not to use during massage
when suffering from hypertension.
Essential oils to be avoided by people suffering from high blood
pressure
Hyssop (contains pinocamphone)
Rosemary (very stimulating)
Sage (contains thujone)
Thyme (hypertensive - increase blood pressure)

Essential oils that can be beneficial in massage for people suffering
from hypertension
Clary sage
Lavender
Marjoram
Melissa
Ylang-ylang

Certain essential oils can cause liver toxicity (hepatoxicity)
The liver is involved in a wide variety of actions and helps with carbohydrate and
lipid metabolism, secretion of bile as well as the synthesis of proteins, yet most
people perceive the liver as only a detoxification organ for the blood.

Certain essential oils may cause liver toxicity, but this is unlikely to be due to skin
absorption, as in massage.
This is however a problem if the essential oil is taken orally (swallowed) - therefore
the taking of essential oils internally must be done with great care - and only done
when so instructed by a medical practitioner that has specialized in this branch of
medicine.
No essential oil should be taken internally unless so prescribed by a licensed
medical practitioner - for more on this see our page on the medicinal use of
essential oils.
Essential oils that may be toxic to the liver, when swallowed
Aniseed
Basil
Bay
Buchu
Cassia
Cinnamon (bark and leaves)
Clove
Fennel
Tarragon
