0 Discussion of Findings

Findings in this study were derived from the quantitative analysis of the checklist, field
notes and questionnaire. These methods used gave an insight in developing pupils
memory retention of using Total Physical Response technique.

1.0.1 Developing pupils low retention of memory in learning the target language
through Total Physical Response technique.

This study revealed that this technique had given a very positive impact towards the
target pupils in developing their memory retention. This can be seen from the data
collected and presented in the previous section of the study; where it shows positive
results from the used of the chosen technique. However, there are number of factors
which contributed to the success of this technique that will be discussed deeply as
below.

It can be safely said that motivation is one of the key that leads to the success of this
technique in developing the target pupils memory retention. According to ICAL (2014),
Total Physical Response is a method that combines information and skills through the
use of the movement and action. This combination of skills allowed the target pupils to
assimilate information and skills at a rapid rate. As a result, this success leads them to a
high degree of motivation. Thus, as their motivation grown, they would try their best
during the sessions and reacted positively towards their mistakes. This had been
proven from the field notes taken where they were very motivated in practicing the items
during the sessions and reacted positively to correct their mistakes in the sessions
conducted. At last, it had leaded them to the achievement of the objective set of the
study.

Besides, as the technique used was fun, the target pupils found it easier to perform in
the sessions. This can be seen from the data collected in the checklists where the target
pupils showed positive improvement from one session to the next sessions. As
supported by Claudia Pesce (2014), she states that Total Physical Response technique
is a tremendous fun technique that makes pupils easier to learn and understand the
target language.

Apart from that, according to Gingerfresa (2013), Total Physical Response technique is
a good tool for building vocabulary for the beginner learners in the target language. The
vocabularies used in the study, were related to pupils real life activities. This helped the
pupils to comprehend the meaning of the items more easily as they could relate to it. As
the target pupils were able to relate the items to their real life activities, this helped them
to perform better in the sessions conducted.

1.0.2 Developing interest of English language among the target pupils.

This study was also to find out whether Total Physical Response technique was able to
develop interest in learning English language among the target pupils. According to
Anon (n.d), Total Physical Response can greatly increase pupils interest and enjoyment
in lessons. This statement is obviously genuine. This is because, it can be seen from
the field notes taken, where the target pupils grew their interest from one session to the
next sessions. Plus, based on their feedback given in the questionnaire given, they
finally responded that they love learning English and agreed that English is fun to be
learnt. As their interest aroused, they finally were able to perform excellently during the
final assessment. As stated by the same author above, interest is a very crucial factor in
learning, as without it, the objective set for the learning may not be achievable.

2.0 Directions for further research

The findings of this study could be verified through a follow up parallel study. Several
other issues that have not been covered in this study could be addressed in future
research to enhance our understanding of the use of the technique Total Physical
Response in developing memory retention of pupils. For instance, the use of qualitative
analysis method could be used to yield better findings.

It would also be quite interesting if different tools except vocabulary such as phrases,
instructions and etc could be used, to find out whether this technique could help in
developing other language components as well as developing the pupils memory
retention in learning.

Lastly, different analysis method also could be used in order to collect data. This can
make the results of the findings more genuine or valid. For example, by using dialogue
method, interview method, video recording and etc.

Conclusion

The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the Total Physical Response method
involves children actively in the classroom activities. It can be effective in introducing
English vocabulary and delivering explicit instruction, the usefulness of this method has
been proven by many experts in several countries and it has given significant benefits to
the students memory retention in learning the target language. In this research, the
researcher found some facts that should be described as the conclusion of the research
itself that the use of the Total Physical Response technique is able to develop pupils
memory retention in learning the target language as well as developing their interest
towards English language.
