Evaluating Web Sites
The Basics What is the Internet?

How to Check Website Credibility
Who is the author(s)? What are their credentials?
Look at the domain (the last part of the Web address, for example: .com, .org
or .edu). This tells you what kind of site you're using: .edu sites are regulated
educational sites; .com and .biz sites are for commercial purposes; and .gov
sites are government sites.

Who is making the information available? How is the site being funded? Are
they trying to sell you something?

When was the information first published? Has it been updated
recently? Many Web pages indicate when they were created and last revised.
Check the bottom of the page for a copyright date or look for a date near the
byline of an article. Without a date, the timeliness of the information is
difficult to evaluate.
No Wikipedia!
Why is Wikipedia not a reliable source?

What is a Reference List?
- A Reference List is an alphabetical list of all the
sources used in your research
- It appears at the end of your report or essay.
- It is beneficial to have different types
i.e. book, web site, journal, primary/ secondary
source, this shows you have actively sourced
information in multiple ways.
IT Use for Major Assignment
For our Major Assignments we will be using a
combination of PC and iPads.
