BID DAY
Friday, September 12, 2014
The fnal day of Formal Fall Recruitment is Bid Day. At 12:30 pm, you will re-
ceive your invitation to join a sorority. The members of the sorority will enthusi-
astically greet you and take you back to your new chapter house! Most sororities
will have a bid day activity or sisterhood in honor of their new members. Sorority
members will help you move your belongings into the house; however, your par-
ents are welcome to assist as well. A member of the House Corporation Board
will be present to answer any questions.
WELCOME WEEK
Welcome Week is the week between the end of Formal Recruitment and the frst day
of class. The sororities plan many activities to introduce you to both the active and
new members, and to familiarize you with sorority and campus life. Many sororities
host a presentation night during this week, which is a night when your family and
friends are invited to visit your new home and meet your new sisters. More details will
be provided from the sorority you join.
As a new student, you are also encouraged to attend Dawg Daze, the University of
Washingtons tradition for welcoming new students to campus. The Panhellenic As-
sociation and Interfraternity Council will be hosting New Member Day on Sept. 20.
As you can see, there are many reasons to stick around for Welcome Week; however,
you can go home or schedule work if necessary. You will have time during the week
to make quick trips home to gather more of your belongings.

here is no specifed dress code during recruit-
ment
week. The most important thing is for you to be
comfortable and be yourself. It is not necessary for you
to purchase an entire new wardrobe in order to partici-
pate in the sorority recruitment process.
PLEASE wear comfortable shoes! We strongly dis-
courage you from wearing a brand new pair of shoes as
you will be doing a lot of walking, sitting, and standing,
so you will want to be comfortable. Seattle weather can
be unpredictable in autumn; keep this in mind when de-
ciding what to wear throughout the week. An umbrella
is always a good idea! To give you a better sense of what
to expect, we have outlined the types of outfts we gen-
erally see throughout recruitment week.
What To Wear
Orientation is casual and comfortable. Feel free to
wear whatever you like during this day!
Open House Round will involve a lot of walking,
so you will want to wear
some comfortable walking
shoes. Clothing worn dur-
ing this round is casual,
such as jeans, shorts, or
capris, which will comple-
ment the two all-Panhel-
lenic t-shirts you will re-
ceive at orientation.
House Tour Day is similar to
business casual attire. A dress, casual
skirt or pants with a nice top will
work well. Keep in mind the length
of your skirt or dress since you will
be walking up and down stairs.
For this same reason, we do not
advise you to wear heels, unless you
wear heels all the time!

Philanthropy Day is slightly more formal,
and a sundress or nice skirt outft would be
good choice. Many of theseoutfts are the
types that would be worn to a luncheon.
Preference Day events are the
most formal events of the week.
Typically, women wear a cocktail
or nice dinner dress; however, please
avoid rhinestones, sequins, or
formal gowns.Homecoming dresses
usually work!

Bid Day is casual and each sorority
will provide the new members with
a t-shirt. Wear something comfortable
for moving in to your new home!
Recruitment Counselors
The Formal Recruitment process can be exciting
and overwhelming so, the Panhellenic Association
has chosen sorority women to guide you through
the process. Recruitment Counselors, also known
as RCs, are upperclassmen who have disassoci-
ated from their chapter during recruitment week so
they can maintain an objective, non-partisan outlook.
Recruitment Counselors undergo extensive training
throughout spring and summer before recruitment,
and are prepared to assist you through this process.
Their purpose is to help make your recruitment experi-
ence the best it can be!
You will be divided into groups with other women go-
ing through recruitment, and each group will be as-
signed RCs. Recruitment Counselors live in Haggett
Hall with PNMs during recruitment so that they are on
hand to answer your questions, be available to you, and
plan exciting off-hour activities for the group. If you
are not staying in the residence halls during recruitment,
you are welcome to stick around in the evening to par-
ticipate in these fun activities so you can get to know
other PNMs and give yourself a fun break from recruit-
ment events at the end of the day.

Absences during Recruitment Week
It is very important to attend all of the events during recruitment week to which
you are invited. Missing events can hinder your chance of being invited to join
a sorority. If an extenuating circumstance, religious holiday observance, or class
makes it impossible for you to attend an event during the week, you must contact
our offce as soon as possible. We will inform the sororities that you are excused
and unable to attend.
Services
Requests for special services or accommodations related to a disability during
recruitment can be made by contacting the Panhellenic Association in advance.
Withdrawal From Recruitment
Participating in Formal Recruitment does not obligate you to join a sorority.
The recruitment process provides you with an opportunity to learn more about
sorority life. You may decide that the sorority lifestyle is not for you. In that case,
talk with your Recruitment Counselor to learn about your options. You will also
need to sign offcial withdrawal paperwork in the Panhellenic Offce.
Legacies
Who is classifed as a legacy differs from chapter to chapter but is typically a
PNM who has a mother, step-mother, grandmother, or sister who is a member
of a sorority. Legacies may be given special consideration by the sororities with
whom their family members are affliated, but legacies are never guaranteed
membership in that organization. If you have questions about the legacy policy
of a particular sorority you may contact their inter/national headquarters to fnd
out more specifc information.
Letters of Recommendation
A recommendation is a letter of introduction written about a PNM sent directly
to a sorority from a sorority alumna. Letters of recommendation fo directly to
the chapter house. Address information is available on the individual chapters
websites. It is not the responsibility of the PNM to obtain a recommendation
letter for a sorority. If a sorority alumna offers to write you a letter, go ahead and
accept it! It is perfectly appropriate for letters to be sent on your behalf; however,
recommendation letters are not necessary for you to participate in recruitment
at UW, and they do not guarantee an invitation from a sorority. Letters of
recommendation should be sent directly to the chapter house, as you can fnd
mailing addresses on their chapter websites.
Housing During Recruitment
If you do not live close to the University of Washington
or do not wish to commute, you have the great option
of staying in a residence hall during recruitment week.
Haggett Hall is conveniently located close to the sorority
houses, making it easy to walk to and from recruitment
events. Staying in the residence hall is a great way to
meet other women going through the recruitment
process as well as hang out with the Panhellenic offcers
and Recruitment Counselors who will also be staying in
the residence hall during the week.
You can fnd more information and register online
through the following link http://www.uwpanhellenic.
com/#!recruitment-rules/c1co3
Check in will be at McMahon Hall, the building to the
right of Hagget Hall, on Saturday, September 5 from
10am-4pm. Rooms are assigned randomly; therefore,
we cannot honor requests for room assignments.
If you are coming from out of town, and plan to stay in
the residence halls for recruitment, you may bring all of
your school-year belongings with you.

Parking During
Recruitment Week
You may park in the N5 parking lot at the north
entrance of the University Washington on North
45th Street and 17th Avenue. The cost is $15 be-
fore 4pm and $7 after 4pm. Parking passes allow
you to park during the day, but not overnight.
You may look for street parking in the Greek
Community, but it can be hard to fnd. If you are
staying in the residence hall during recruitment
week, you may purchase a parking pass for the lot
underneath Haggett Hall. Residence hall parking
passes can be purchased during check-in. Your
attendance at all recruitment events needs to be
on time; please plan accordingly.

University Housing
The Panhellenic Association and HFS cooperate to identify women who have applied
for a residence hall space and have also registered for formal sorority recruitment. HFS
guarantees placement in the residence halls to any new freshman or transfer student
who goes through recruitment and does not pledge a sorority. In order to qualify for a
guaranteed space, you must:
Be a new freshman or transfer student
Register for recruitment with the Panhellenic Association by September 1, 2014
Complete formal sorority recruitment
Request placement in the residence halls by 5 p.m. on September 18, 2014
Your residence hall assignment will be based on your recruitment application date. It
is likely that you will be assigned to temporary housing for the beginning of autumn
quarter.
Before September 1, 2014
If you plan to register for recruitment, you should NOT submit a residence hall
application.
If you do submit a residence hall application and register for recruitment by September
1, most residence hall applications will be cancelled, your space will be reassigned to
another student, and any payments will be refunded in full.
After Formal Sorority Recruitment
If you choose not to pledge a sorority and would like to be assigned to the residence
halls, you must complete the online housing application and contact the Student
Services Offce (206-543-4059) by 5 pm. on September 18, 2014. You will be assigned
to a space in temporary housing.
Will I Get Into A
Sorority?
Recruitment is a mutual selection
process. After each round of
events, sororities and potential new
members will enter their preferences
via computer for the next round.
The PNMs preferences of which
sororities they would like to revisit
will be matched to those of the
sororities invitations. The number
of sororities you are able to visit
decreases as the week progresses in
order for you to narrow down your
choices. It is not atypical to receive
fewer than the maximum number
of invitations in any given round;
do not let that discourage you!
Typically, any woman who goes
through the recruitment process
with an open mind and maximizes their opportunities, has the most success
in joining a sorority. Being an upperclassman does not necessarily hurt your
chances of joining. If you have further questions, please see our website at www.
uwpanhellenic.com or call the Panhellenic Offce at (206) 543.1810.
Costs of Living in a Sorority
The cost of living in a sorority, which is paid quarterly, includes members room
and board, national and local dues and one-time membership expenses. In
addition, the dues cover the staff salary and home needs like cable and internet.
You will recieve a more detailed fnancial breakdown sheet during House Tours
round of Recruitment. Payment plans may be arranged through the individual
sorority.
Be relaxed and enjoy yourself.
Focus on the conversation! Avoid making decisions
on material items such as clothes and house
structures.
Bring fip-fops to wear when walking from one event
to anotheror break in your shoes!
Disregard rumors from other women, men, and any
other sources. Make decisions based on your feelings
and experiences you have during recruitment.
Dont be pressured to join a particular chapter because
of a parent, sibling, friend, or companion.
Drink lots of water!!
Keep a lot of notes - this will help you make the best
decisions throughout the week.
Have personal down-time - try not to get burned out
too quickly. Recruitment is a long week and you need
to be adequately prepared.
Keep your opinions about recruitment and specifc
chapters to yourself.
Panhellenic is here to help YOU!!
