Kick off: looking forward to the new season
Clubs weigh up their chances ahead of season
FOOTBALL
COSTCUTTER Ceredigion
League
NEWCASTLE Emlyn Re-
serves set the scene alight
last season by becoming the
first reserves team to win the
Division One championship.
After many seasons in the
Welsh League the Emlyn sen-
ior side was relegated and
the majority of the players
departed leaving last seasons
Costcutter champions as the
1st X1. The clubs reserves
will compete in the Second
Division and the Thirds in
the Reserves Cup (Division
Three).
Attacking bright spark
Adrian Hazelby has returned
to Pencader after the village
club re-formed during the
summer, but the Reds have
brought in players. Guided
by manager Steven Hicks and
led by former Cardigan Town
and Maesglas striker Phil
Furney, they can again be
considered one of the front-
runners in the title race.
Looking forward to the sea-
son Furney, who enjoyed his
best season on the local cir-
cuit last time, said We will
give it all weve got. You cant
do more than that.

Arrows craze grows as
extra division proposed
THE game of darts has never
been so popular, and that cer-
tainly rings true for Cardi-
gan.
Boosted by Sky TV cov-
erage, the Cardigan local
singles league is preparing
for its eighth season. With
demand for places so great,
organisers are considering
forming a fourth division.
As it stands 39 players,
many of them Welsh Inter-
nationals and leading county
throwers, compete in three
divisions of the Hope & An-
chor League. But that could
be extended to four for the
forthcoming season.
Rising Professional Darts
Corporation thrower Jamie
Lewis, currently rated in
the world top 25, is the shin-
ing star as he gains valuable
competition for the many
tournaments in which he
participates.
Last season 22-year-old Lew-
is won the Grand Slam tour-
nament with a final victory
over British Darts Organisa-
tion player and established
Welsh International Johnny
Clayton, of Pontyberem.

Clubs learn new future
NOT for the first time since
rugby union officially went
professional in 1995, the WRU
has restructured the leagues
and after the latest tinkering
many followers are hoping it
will be the last and result in
a permanent scenario writes
John Adey.
On the plus side the new
set-up sees Crymych and
Newcastle Emlyn competing
in Division One West, a situ-
ation likely to delight both
treasurers with the prospect
of bumper crowds for local
derbies.
Cardigan competed in Divi-
sion Three West last term but
under the new structure will
be in Division Two West and
meet the likes of Haverford-
west, Llanybydder and coun-
ty rivals Aberystwyth.
Crymych RFC
Despite being one of the
youngest WRU members the
north Pembrokeshire club is
one of the most progressive
in West Wales and last season
reached the highest level to
date in Division One West.
The Preseli men start at the
same venue they opened the
Crymych skipper and centre
Elgan Vittle (8909113)
last campaign with a visit to
Athletic Park in Johnstown
to take on Carmarthen Ath-
letic.
There have been large
turnouts in training under
coaches Gareth Williams and
Robin Davies, including full-
back Carwyn Jones who has
returned to the fold after a
spell with Whitland.
The side will be led by vast-
ly experienced centre Elgan
Vittle.
Team manager Adrian
Howells said The build-up to
the newseason is going really
well. Everyone is looking for-
ward to the challenge and we
are hoping to finish as high
as possible.
Newcastle Emlyn RFC
With the arrival of a crop of
new players it is hardly sur-
prising that there is an air of
optimism among supporters
of the Red and Whites, but Di-
rector of Rugby Marc Lloyd
sounded a note of caution as
he anticipates stiff competi-
tion.
The side will be led by inspi-
rational lock Gethin Greaves
and strengthened by the re-
turn of second row Dyfed
Morgan from Carmarthen
Athletic, back-rower Bryn-
mor Jones from Lampeter,
number 8 Luke Kendall
from Llandovery, Crymych
scrum-half Iwan James and
centre Viv Jenkins from
Carmarthen Athletic.
With around 30 players
training regularly Marc
Lloyd, who is assisted by Ar-
wel Davies and Charles Gale,
said We are all relishing
what is going to be a big chal-
lenge.
Our aim must be to stay
up and anything else will be
a bonus.
Cardigan RFC
Founded in 1876, Cardigan
is one of the oldest clubs
in Wales and was for many
years the only one in this
area but in recent times the
Cardis have been forced to
take a back seat to Crymych
and Newcastle Emlyn.
The club recently appointed
its first Director of Rugby
in Nigel Smith, a retired PE
teacher from Gwent who has
moved to live in the area.
There are encouraging at-
tendances at training ses-
sions with a crop of young-
sters showing up well.
Cardigan start the cam-
paign against Aberystwyth
at Plascrug and the following
Saturday host Llanybydder at
King George V Playing Field.

One of the highlights of the
season was a fabulous 9-dart-
er achieved by James Bevan
of Carmarthen.
One of the tournaments or-
ganisers said: The leagues
reputation has spread far
and wide and we are receiv-
ing enquiries from players as
far away as Swansea who are
keen to join.
Last seasons runners-up St
Dogmaels went off the boil
midway through but with a
crop of talented youngsters
Saints hit form towards the
end when lifting the Bay Cup
and finishing second in the
championship.
Saints have lost the services
of striker John Lumb who
has returned to neighbours
Cardigan Town but despite
some reservations over expe-
rience the likes of Kyle Phil-
lips, Adam Williams, Rhys
Jones, Craig Williams and a
host of others are youngsters
capable of rubbing shoulders
with the best around.
With half a dozen or so
talented players including
St Dogmaels goalkeeper Ca-
sey Walters having come on
board and with the likes of
ex-Goodwick United player/
manager Steve Blackford
training regularly it is hard-
ly surprising that Cardigan
Town are being looked at as
potential champions.
But despite the arrival of
classy midfielder James Ev-
ans from Goodwick manager
Seamus Doherty is far too ex-
perienced to get carried away.
We did OK last season af-
ter promotion and we aim to
Lampeter Town captured
the Emrys Morgan and Dai
Dynamo Davies trophies
last term and although slip-
ping up in the championship
race at a crucial time the
mid county side must be re-
spected and fewwould be sur-
prised if they are again in the
mix at the end of the season.
Hopes are high at Crannog,
Llandysul, Maesglas, New
Quay, Aberporth and Bargod
Rangers while topping the
list of priorities for promot-
ed Llanboidy and Felinfach
could be consolidation.
