Main features and advantages

Design
Restrike-free interruption of capacitive current
The circuit-breakers have passed type tests in
accordance with IEC standards.
Mechanical endurance tests to 10 000 opera-
The breaker pole constitutes a sealed unit ,
which includes one or two breaking unit(s),
support and operating insulators, and pole
linkage housing. To the latter the opening
spring is attached.
To ensure the quality of the gas, each
breaker is provided with a filter for moisture
absorbtion.
The breaker poles are filled with gas to a
pressure of 0.7 MPa (abs. + 20C) for opera-
tion down to - 30C.
The breaker is designed and tested for
operations in ambient temperatures down
to -50C.
due to optimized contact design and movement.
Low overvoltages when switching inductive currents as
a result of optimum quenching at current zero.
High dielectric strength even at atmospheric
pressure, due to optimized contact gap.
High security against gas leakage due to double X-
rings in all dynamic seals and double O-rings in static
seals, verified during more than 30 years of field opera-
tion under various climatic conditions. ( gas loss
much less than 1 percent / year.)
Long maintenance intervals due to separate current
paths for continuous and arcing currents, respectively.
Reliable components due to all parts optimized, aided
by advanced computer technology, for electrical and
mechanical stresses.
High seismic withstand capability due to optimized pole
and structure.
Low noise level due to low mechanical energy required
for operation.
Easy installation and commisioning. Each
circuit-breaker is pre-tested and shipped to
installation site in the form of a few pre-
assembled units.
Optional synchronised switching due to
synchronising relay type Switchsync.
Optional supervisory control due to condition
monitoring.
The HPL is a puffer type SF

circuit-breaker
designed for system voltages 72.5 - 800 kV and for
rated short-circuit currents up to 63 kA. The design
incorporates an improved puffer interrupter based on
experience from previous interrupter designs.
Circuit-breakers with one breaking unit per pole
can be operated with one operating mechanism per
breaker. All single pole operated circuit-breakers are
equipped with one operating mechanism per pole.
The HPL circuit-breaker complies with the IEC and
ANSI international standards.
The HPL circuit-breaker family satisfies the highest
demands. It is based on the latest developments

in dielectric dimensioning and arc physics research.
Following are the main advantages:
tions have been performed.
Before delivery each circuit-breaker must pass
routine tests in accordance with IEC and ANSI.
For each circuit-breaker a routine test report is
issued showing actual test results.
The breaking unit insulator encloses the
breaking chamber with stationary and
moving arcing contacts. The current paths
are connected to the end flanges for
terminal connection.
The support insulator encloses the operating
insulator which connects the operating
mechanism to the breaking unit.

The circuit-breaker is operated by motor charged spring
operating mechanism(s) type BLG 1002A, which is
installed in a splash-proof and corrosion resistant housing,
attached to the structure.
One BLG 1002A is used for three pole operation up to
300 kV
Three BLG 1002As are used for single pole operation.
For further details please see pamphlet SESWG / B2504en..
Operating mechanism Transport and erection
HPL circuit-breaker poles with one breaking unit per phase
are transported as complete units filled with gas to a
slight overpressure. Circuit-breakers with two breaking
units per phase are supplied as breaker head and support
insulator. Each circuit-breaker is routine tested in the
factory.
Erection work at site can be done in less than one day.
No gas treatment is necessary before gas filling. Filling of
SF gas to specified density can be facilitated by using the
following presurizing equipment:
One special control valve, for connection to the gas
bottle, and a gas-filled hose with connectors.
For filling with mixed gas (SF
6
and N
2
SF
6
and CF
4
)
a complementary control valve for connecting to a
separate gas bottle is included.
Using the above equipment, gas filling can be done
without gas being released into the atmosphere.
