The shown table gives information about the poverty rates among various family groups
who lived in Australia in 1999.
It can be clearly seen from the table that single people were more likely to be poor than
couples and the poverty rate among people who had children were higher than the
couples who did not. Poverty levels were the least among aged people and the most
among sole parents.
Overall 11% of Australians or 1837000 people lived in poverty in 1999; the elderly group
in Australia had the lowest poverty rate of 6% and 4% for single aged person and aged
people respectively.
Whereas 21% of single parents were poor in 1999, 19% of couples with children were
classed as poor. The same pattern can be seen for people with no children. While 12%
of couples with children lived below poverty line, only 7% of couples with no children
were poor.

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 1, Task 2
There are various benefits and drawbacks for books, radio and television as ways of
communicating. In my opinion television is the most effective among all.
The advantage of books is that they are reliable sources of information and people
always refer to books as the oldest way of preserving information. Books are the best
way to improve reading and even writing skills. On the other hand they very soon go out
of date, the moment the book is published the information can become old or even
proven to be wrong.
Radio is another useful way of communication. Despite the advent of other media radio
still plays its role in the world and has not been abolished. The positive point of radio is
that we can listen to it while doing other activities, such as driving, gardening, cooking
so it saves time and enhances the quality of our day. But the lack of vision can be a
challenge, it can be more difficult to communicate with no pictures, there could be
misunderstandings or one may not feel much comfortable with just listening to
someones voice.
Television has changed our life style since it came to our house. It is usually free to
watch most tv channels and the programs are very varied which cover every taste and
age. There are televisions in every house so it is very easy to access TVs. The most
significant advantage compared with the other 2 media is that we can see the conveyed
information, so obviously we can communicate better.
In conclusion there are benefits and drawbacks to different media but television seems
to be the most influential among all.

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 2, Task 1
The line graph shows the ordinary demand for electricity in winter and summer in
England. The pie chart compares the use of electricity.
It is noticeable that there is a much higher request for electricity in winter than in
summer, almost double. And that the electricity is more used to heat water and rooms in
households.
It is clear that electricity request in winter peaks at 21:00 to approximately 45000 units
while in summer the peak is only 20000 at 14. In winter the lowest demand is as high as
30000 at 8 whereas slightly lower electricity is needed in summers, nearly 14000 at 9.
52.5% of electricity consumption in a typical house in England is used for heating rooms
and water which is the largest proportion. Three kitchen households account for the
next biggest percentage of electricity consumption, 17.5 %. The remaining 30% of
electricity is used in lighting, TV, radio, vacuum, cleaners, food mixers and electric tools.

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 2, Task 2
Everybody is searching for happiness, it is very essential in life but it is very difficult to
define for various reasons. There are factors that contribute to happiness.
Happiness is an emotional concept and everybody is different when it comes to
emotions, so they have various definitions for happiness since they have unique
perspectives, hobbies, goals and attitudes. As a result, trying to give a definition for
happiness is quite a challenging task.
Some people mention materialistic things as a source of happiness such as good
income, up to date car, modern lap tops and cell phones or a big luxurious house.
These people may feel satisfied by getting a suitable job or buying a new house. Those
usually devote their life to their careers and despite spending few hours with their family
and friends they still feel happy as long as they have enough money to spend. These
people very often find out later in life that deep inside these factors has not lead to a
real satisfaction.
Other people on the other hand attribute happiness to emotions and relationships. Such
people think that money and related matters do not contribute to satisfaction so they
tend to seek happiness in a lovely family, children, a stable marriage or a lot of good
friends. They may refuse a well paid job because they dont want to be away from their
family.
Overall it is concluded that happiness as an emotional concept is not easy to define as it
varies from one person to another and for each person the factors differ.

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 3, Task 1
The bar chart illustrates the different percentages of men and women holding a degree
in Australia in 1999.
It can be clearly seen that considerably higher number of men held a vocational
diploma, postgraduate diploma and masters degree than women, While more women
achieved undergraduate diploma and bachelors degree than men did. The largest gap
between the proportions of two genders can be seen in skilled vocational diploma.
Men held 90% of vocational diplomas compared to women at only 10%. This is the
hugest gap between the percentages of the two genders. In undergraduate level women
were the dominant group, making up 70% of the qualifications. They also constituted
53% of the holders of a bachelors degree.
By contrast, Men outnumbered their female counterparts in postgraduate level at 70%,
therefore only 30% of women achieved a postgraduate diploma. Men were still the
dominant gender in masters program with 60% of the overall qualifications.

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 3, Task 2
There are different opinions about the freedom of artists in each country. While some
people in conservative societies believe governments should control artists, in my
opinion there should be complete freedom for artists to create their work.
I believe that artist should be given enough freedom to produce their work, because art
is a way of communication and conveying message to the audience so freedom of art
can be regarded as freedom of speech and therefore it is a characteristic of a free,
democratic society. So if we have the claim of living in a free society we should allow
people to express themselves by different arts. In addition to the above point, artists
should have enough freedom to criticize the governments in their art such as movies
and music. The government should not constraint them in any way. If they ban artists
from giving their opinions about government performance, that society is certainly
getting closer to dictatorship, as usually in dictatorial countries we see that many
movies, music, and books get banned and even artists get imprisoned.
On the other hand there could be some drawbacks for giving freedom to artists, some
artists may abuse the freedom and produce provocative work such as porno movies,
racial songs and books to earn money or attract attention. Although this is likely to
happen I tend to accept this as a risk of living in a free society.
Having said all the above points I agree that there should be freedom for artists to
communicate with people, governments should not restrict them and the society should
accept the possible drawbacks of this freedom

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 4, Task 1
The line graph gives information about visits to and from UK, while the bar chart shows
the most favored destinations of UK residents in 1999.
We can figure out that the trips from and to UK increased over a period of 20 years and
trips from UK reached a much higher figure in 1999.
The first graph clearly shows that in 1979 about 13 million UK residents visited abroad
while 10 million people travelled to UK. The rates of trips to and from UK continued to
rise, but visits from UK faced a faster increase. In 1999 the trips from UK reached 53
million while trips to UK stood at only 27 million.
The bar charts compare the most favorite countries of UK residents. France stood first
with about 11 million visits, there were 9 million trips to Spain and less to USA (4 million)
and Greece (3 million). Turkey was the least popular destination for UK residents
among the compared 5 countries.

IELTS Cambridge Book 4, Test 4, Task 2
In many countries school staffs face serious problems with student behavior, various
matters cause this problem but there are solutions for each.
One of the most substantial factors in bad behavior of children is simply their bad
upbringing. The parents are usually too busy to take care of their children. They often
leave their children at home with Violent and inappropriate programs on TV and
aggressive video games. Children spend many hours watching any type of TV
programs unsuitable for their age and play video games full of violence, it is evident that
these can have a bad impact on children. Parents also tend to provide their children
with almost anything so that they become selfish and greedy and they get used to never
be rejected in the terms of their requests. In addition children misbehave because they
know they will not face any severe punishments from parents or school staff.
There are various solutions to these causes and some of them are as follows. The most
essential solution is to educate parents about their childrens problems at school and
have them involved and concerned in the process of tackling the problems. They should
be asked to spend more time with them and pay more attention to them. Childrens
access to TV and video games should be restricted to only appropriate, beneficial
programs and games. Moreover, a number of non-physical punishments should be
considered for any bad behaviors.
To conclude with, I think parents irresponsibility, TV, video games and lack of
punishments contribute to childrens poor manner but the problem it can be overcome
with taking some measures with the help of parents.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 1, Task 1
The line graph compares percentages of people aged 65 and more over a period of 100
years in three countries.
As it is clear from the graph, elderly proportions in all three countries increase between
1940 and 2040. It is predicted that Japan will face the most dramatic change in the
elderly population in the given period.
In 1940 only 5% of Japanese were 65 and older compared to only 7% of Swedish and
9% of Americans. The rates for Americans and Swedish continued to increase despite
some fluctuations until 2010 when the figures for Sweden and USA reached 20% and
14% respectively. By contrast only 6 percent of Japanese were 65 years and older in
2010.
It is expected that by 2040 the number of elderly in all 3 countries continue to climb
when Japan will stands first in the term of proportion of people aged 65 and more with
almost 27 % while the rates for Sweden and USA will be lower at 25 and 23 %
respectively.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 1, Task 2
There are different methods of accepting students in universities, in some countries
gender is an influential issue for getting admitted, while other countries in contrast try to
balance the gender of students in the class. However, I think the universities should
admit students regardless of their gender.
Men and women have different morale and brain structure, so they tend to think and act
differently; as a consequence they usually have different talents and preferences.
Women usually do not like the industrial rough environment whereas men make it their
first choice. More women are interested in studying nursing on the other hand. So
universities should respect the students preferences, talents and choices. How can
they expect similar numbers of male and female in mechanical engineering when over
90% of the applicants are male?! Trying to have an equal number of men and women in
a particular subject can be quite unrealistic and unfair to human rights as a matter of
neglecting personal determinations.
Another debate is that the admission process should be done with no gender
discrimination. Universities should pay severe attention to the appl icants qualities,
educational resume and statement of purposes and avoid accepting them just to
balance the gender issue in the class. Taking such a measure lowers the quality of
class and as a result the university itself. It also can disappoint some applicants as they
realize that the main merit is not the good resume.
To sum up I am totally against equal numbers of each gender in university and I think
admissions should be based on a persons quality regardless of his/her gender.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 2, Task 1
The bar charts gives information about reasons for studying in different age groups and
the proportion of employers support in each group.
It is noticeable that the youngest group of employees who are under 26 old, studies
mainly for career purpose, while people over 49 tend to study for their personal interest.
The employer support is at maximum for those under 26. And the time off and help with
fees decreases for older employees and reaches minimum for people in their 30s.
It is obvious that 80% of people under 26 study for a career. Career as a reason
becomes less popular as people grow older. Career and interest each comprise 40% of
the employees reason to study when they are in their fourth decade of life. For people
over 49 career is motivating only 18% of them while 70% of them study because they
favor it..
Employers offer maximum support to 60% of the youngest employees. They tend to
give less time off and help to older people and their support reaches the least at 30% for
people in their 30s. Employees who are between 40 and 49 and over 49 receive a
support of 33% and 43% respectively.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 2, Task 2
In some countries students travel or work for a year before they start universities. This
approach has both benefits and drawbacks, but in my opinion taking a year off is a good
time to learn extra skills and clear up the mind.
By having a year of break between high school and university one can think deeply
about his/her favored subject to study at university and clear his/her life path. They can
think freely about their real talents and interests away from school and teachers
pressure. They can use this gap to travel and gain valuable experiences or they can
work for a year and save some money for their education and get partly independent
from their parents for instance by buying their own car. Working has many other
advantages such as becoming responsible and improving communication with people.
The students are also likely to learn some essential skills.
On the other hand one may find working and earning money more interesting than
studying or simply feel lazy and as a result never go to university. This can reduce their
chance of career success as there is a huge competition to get a good job and income.
In addition to that, the students may forget some basic subjects they had studied at
school and it can affect their grades at university.
To conclude with, there are good and bad points about travelling or working for a year
before university but I personally think it is a very smart idea to take a break and get
familiar with the work environment.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 3, Task 1
Two potential locations for a new supermarket are shown in the map of Garl.
The main difference of 2 locations is that s1 is situated out of town whereas s2 is in the
city center. The two sites are also different in the terms of access to roads and railway.
S2 is in the city center and surrounded by industries and houses so it has a better
opportunity to sell goods to the neighbors in comparison with s1, which is out of town
and more neighborhoods are far away from it.
If we look in detail, we notice that S1 is close to a railway that runs through the city
center and a main road that goes through housing area. This probable location is only
12 km away from Hindon, a city that accommodates 10000 people. S1 is situated in a
no traffic zone so it is not convenient to go there by car. There are main roads and
railways from Cransdon, a city with 29000 people and Bransdon with a population of
15000 but the roads and railway do not run through the city center therefore not very
much convenient.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 3, Task 2
Both competition and co operation are a must for life but I believe in the modern society
where everybody has a special skill, we should encourage children to co-operate rather
than compete with each other.
Sense of Competition helps children to try hard to be the best. For instance in a
classroom the children compete each other to get the best mark, teachers compliment
and applause. In some cases the children can be given a prize when they score highest
on an important exam. In the process, a childs talent can be discovered and taken care
of. But stimulating the sense of competition among children is not always healthy; they
may become selfish and greedy and ruin their friendships.
Co- operation is a great merit that is highly valued in the developed countries. If children
have learned to only compete they cannot benefit the society much. In the modern
world the skills and science have become too vast and complicated that one cannot
progress in the society on his own, but there should be a good co-operation to succeed
in a group. In my country they encourage children from kindergarten to be the best, as
grownups people find it hard to work in teams and co operate efficiently, therefore little
success is achieved. It is very often seen that a united team of average people is more
successful than a single professional person.
Overall I suppose it is better to focus on co-operation than competition in schools and
kindergartens as society needs people to work in teams not by themselves.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 4, Task 1
The table compares some data about the underground railway system in 6 cities.
At first glance it is observed that the oldest railway systems have also the longest route
and generally carry more passengers.
London metro is the oldest in the world, having opened in 1863; It also has the longest
route among six cities. Paris has the second oldest underground system built 112 years
ago, it is 2 times smaller than London system with 199 km route, but serves more
people annually. Tokyo, only one third of Londons system, carries the most
passengers, estimated 1927 million people per year.
Of the three newest systems, Washington is the most extensive with 126 km of rout and
has an annual number of 144 million passengers a year compared to 50 million and 45
million for los Angeles and Kyoto respectively. Los Angeles has the newest system
having built in 2001 and having 28 km route length.

IELTS Cambridge Book 5, Test 4, Task 2
Arguments have risen about which of the genetic characteristics or experiences in life
influence human character and progress more. In my opinion both contribute to human
personality but life experiences or nurture has a much more effect on human rather
genes.
One proof to this claim is that in a typical family, siblings usually differ greatly in the
terms of character and success; in the same family you may find a member who has
reached high levels of education while another has not even accomplished high school.
One of the children may be very kind and affectionate, while another is selfish and bad
tempered. Although these children have inherited nearly similar genes, it is the
environment, friends or personal experiences that has lead them to where they are.
Identical twins also tend to have completely different personalities and life styles. They
end up choosing different careers and friends. It has also been observed that under
specific conditions even the IQ level of twins may vary.
Another argument is that humans have gotten smarter and more successful than they
have been in the past, this is attributed to education and improved standards of life in
the recent century. This is a very strong proof to demonstrate that nurture has a greater
impact than nature, because human genes have not improved but their environment
has. We clearly notice that younger children are slightly smarter than our generation
because they benefited a more efficient educational system and a vast number of useful
technologies.
Overall although both genetic characteristics and life experiences have huge impacts on
human character and development, I believe that what human experience overweighs
the genetics in terms of personality.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 1, Task 1
The line graph compares the amount of water used across the world in three sectors
between 1900 and 2000 and the table represents water consumed in Brazil and Congo
in the year 2000.
It can be seen that the use of water in three sections rose dramatically over a period of
100 years and agriculture used much more water than industry and houses did. We can
also notice that people in Brazil consumed much more water than people in Congo.
In 1900, 500km3 water was used for agriculture whereas the figures for domestic and
industrial use stood at only one fifth of that amount. By 2000 agricultural use reached
the highest level of 3000 km3 while industrial and domestic use increased to 1000 km3
and 300 km3 respectively.
In 2000, Brazil had a much more population( 176 million) compared to Congo ( only 5.2
million), Each person in Brazil consumed 359 m3 water, the figure is almost eighty times
lower for Congo at only 8 m3. This could be explained by the fact that Brazil has more
irrigated lands at 26500 than Congo at 100.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 1, Task 2
Although some advertisements may be beneficial, I tend to agree that most of them
encourage people to buy goods they do not really need.
It is obvious that people get greatly influenced by advertisements and spend huge
amounts of money on the goods and services they do not need. A proof for this claim is
that very often people never intend to buy a specific product until it is advertised on TV;
as a result they get highly encouraged and put that on the list. Very often they just have
no idea of the product but just wish to try it as the advertisement looks very inviting and
tempting. It is noticeable that most sold items in a society is usually not a basic
household, but a luxurious object. In addition to that there are various companies
producing the same good but the one which advertised more sold better.
Another point to mention is that Advertisement is a university course and companies
hire many ad specialists to produce influensive ads for them. It is seen that successful
firms allocated more budget to advertising. In ads, psychology is consistently employed
to target people. The specialists analyze characters, reactions, tastes and flaws of the
meant audience, use charming celebrities to assure people of the quality and add
attractive scenery elements to catch attention of people. Therefore there is a
sophisticated science and evaluation behind each ad.
To conclude with, I agree with the topic that sails represent the power of advertising not
the real needs of people in a specific society.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 2, Task 1
The table compares data about differences made in travel by English people over a
period of 15 years.
It is evident from the table that people travelled more in 2000 than in 1985. In both
years cars accounted for a more distance than other modes.
In 1985 overall 4740 miles were travelled by each person annually, in 2000 the travelled
distance increased to 6475. The most used mean of transport in 1985 was cars, which
travelled 3199 per person yearly. This amount increased to 4806 km in 2000. The next
most used mode of travel in 1985 was local bus accounting for 429 km of the distance.
The figure in 2000 decreased to 274 km.
In 1985 taxis were least used by each person, with only 13 km travelled per year,
whereas in 2000 as much as 42 km were travelled by a taxi. People walked and rode a
bicycle more in 1985 than 2000.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 2, Task 2
It is true that professional sportsmen earn huge amounts of money than the ones in
other fields, although this trend can be defended for various reasons but my personal
view is that it is wrong and unjustified to pay them more than other professionals.
One argument to defend the high salaries of the sportsmen is that Professional
sportsmen, who play in leagues or national teams, have devoted their entire life to reach
this level. For instance there are millions of boys who play football since early childhood
but few of them continue to put sports first in their lives. They get busy with education,
career, marriages and children and remain an average sportsman but those who remain
top, summarize their life in football. In addition to the above point these professionals
have been chosen among enormous numbers of counterparts and their talents and
abilities have been proven, in other words they are unique so they deserve high
salaries.
On the other hands, sport matches is not a vital field to spend millions of dollars of its
professionals, there are doctors and nurses who save lives in a society but earn a lot
less than sportsmen. There are also scientists whose discoveries and inventions
contribute to society but they never earn so much. I also tend to believe that the
payments in a balanced society should be based on the amount of work and severity of
the need for the career. With such a theory super high incomes for sportsmen seems to
be unfair.
To summarize I defend the opinion that high salaries of professional sportsmen are not
fair compared to specialists in other fields.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 3, Task 1
The cyclic process shows the levels in a life of a silkworm and the linear diagram
illustrates procedure of producing silk cloth are also mentioned.
It can be clearly seen from the first diagram that there are 4 levels before eggs turn into
a moth. And there are 5 different stages in production of silk cloth from selecting to
weaving.
Eggs are produced by an adult moth, they take 10 days to become larva, which feed on
mulberry leaves for 4-6 weeks and then they produce a silk thread around themselves.
In a period of 3-8 days a cocoon is formed from the silk thread in which the larva stay
before a moth emerges after 16 days.
To obtain silk clothes firstly cocoons are well selected and boiled in hot water. Each
cocoon is unwind to a produce 300-0meter thread. Next, the thread are twisted
together and dyed. In the last step the threads are weaved then dyed again before they
are ready.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 3, Task 2
To a certain extent I agree that visitors to countries should adapt to local customs,
however I also believe that the host country should not guard against foreign
differences.
Different countries in the world have different and even opposing cultures. A habit that is
favored in a country may be considered insulting and rude in another. For example in
some countries men and women kiss when they meet but in other countries it is
prohibited to do so and such an action is regarded perverted and unacceptable. It is
important for travelers to read about basic culture of their desti nation and try to be
respectful and adapt to it as much as they can for their period of stay. This trend can not
only glad the locals but also minimize the possible offense and confrontations.
On the other hand the host country should also try to be more flexible when foreigners
visit there. They should understand that foreigners do not intend to upset or disrespect
them and it is impossible for them to learn all the conventions and possible errors are
likely to happen. Furthermore they may fail to follow the rules as it is so new to them
and difficult. The host country and locals should be convinced that if they mistreat the
visitors, the place will eventually lose its popularity among foreigners and they will lose
many jobs, financial profits and general advances due to the decrease in tourism.
Having said all the above points and looking at both sides, I conclude that both the
visitors and the host country should try to understand and respect one another.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 4, Task 1
Two charts are shown; the first one compares the statistic of marriages and divorces in
USA over a period of 3 decades while the second shows data about marital status of
people in the same country and period.
The charts show that the marriage rates decreased from 11970 to 2000 and most
divorces happened in 1980. The figures of never married and divorced people saw a
rise in the period while there were less married and widowed people in 2000 than in
1970.
To begin with, 1970, 2.5 million marriages and 1 million divorces happened. The rate of
marriages remained the same in 10 years later, while the figure for divorces rose to 1.4
million. In 1990, both the number of marriages and divorces fell to 2.3 million and 1.1
million respectively. 2000 witnessed only 2 million people getting married and 1 million
getting divorced.
The number of never married people reached 20 million from 1970 to 2000. There were
as many as 70 million people married in 1979 the number which decreased by 11
million in the start of new millennium. The figures for widowed people saw a fall of 1
million while divorce rose from 1 million to 9 million in 2000.

IELTS Cambridge Book 6, Test 4, Task 2
Some people appreciate no change in their life style while some people always favor
changes. I personally prefer the second approach to life and find these people more
interesting.
Some people prefer to live in the same house as before and drive the same car as 30
years ago. They are afraid to try new things in life or take any risk. Such people are
usually old or pessimistic people who stick to the past and the life style they are used to.
Most people find them boring; they may also end up getting depressed as human in
general needs and likes variety. They do not benefit from this trend, because they lose
the chance to meet new people, experience new technology and enjoy more comfort,
since they do not change their neighbor, dont buy brand new lap tops and dont
approach modern cars.
By contrast people who welcome changes in life are usually teens and young lively
adults who have a passion for life. They are usually fun to be around and popular since
they make a lot of friends in new experiences and places. They have the courage to
take risks and tend to be optimistic so they win in many occasions in life. They end up
finding their dream career and dream life partner as they seek for career changes and
meeting new people, compared to the first group who dont give themselves these
chances. They also learn a lot from each circumstance and become more wise and
experienced people, excellent for consulting.
Overall I tend to believe that people who consider change well, have a better life and
are more successful than those who always do the same thing.
