Introduction
The advent of cloud computing has given rise to trendssuch as the
consumerization of IT, big data and enterprise mobilitythat have created increasingly
connected data ecosystems, and this is driving demand for digital storage capacity. The
cloud has been regarded as a threat to traditional storage solutions, but that is an
incorrect assumptionrising rates of cloud adoption will increase demand for the hard
drives and solid state drives that comprise cloud storage, creating more opportunities
for storage vendors. The solid state drive (SSD) market has seen a spike in growth, but
hard disk drive (HDD) technology is far from dead. As consumers and businesses
consider a mixture of highperformance and affordable options, the need to seamlessly
transition between these solutions will be even greater.
The demands for storage are multi-pronged in both the business and consumer
sectors. It is not enough to simply deliver more capacity due to rising expectations
surrounding performance. Both businesses and consumers need highly interoperable
platforms so that initiatives such as big data and virtualization can be undertaken
regardless of the storage infrastructure.

Screens Everywhere" said it best when it described the consumer computing market as
shifting toward personalized computing, but that trend is not just for the personal cloud.
Personalized computing has made its way into the world of consumers, small
businesses and the enterprise. The cloud plays a critical role in the future of storage in
that it allows for the concept of personalized computing, but the cloud is not the end of
traditional storage. Instead, the cloud allows users to optimize many connected storage

Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, refers to computer
components and recording media that retain digital data used for computing for some
interval of time. Computer data storage provides one of the core functions of the
modern computer, that of information retention. It is one of the fundamental components
of all modern computers, and coupled with a central processing unit (CPU, a
processor), implements the basic computer model used since the 1940s.
Similarly, storage today more commonly refers to storage devices and their
media not directly accessible by the CPU (secondary or tertiary storage) typically
hard disk drives, optical disc drives, and other devices.
Alternatively referred to
as a hard disk drive and
abbreviated as HD or HDD, the
hard drive is the computer's
main storage media device that
permanently stores all data on
the computer. Most computer
hard drives are in an internal
drive bay at the front of the
computer and connect to the
motherboard using either ATA,
SCSI, or a SATA cable and power cable. All information stored on a traditional hard
drive, is done magnetically.

Although most hard drives are internal hard drives, many users also use external
hard drives to backup data on their computer and expand the total amount of space
available to them. External drives are often stored in an enclosure that helps protect
the drive and allow it to interface with the computer, usually over USB or eSATA.

External hard drives come in many shapes and sizes. Some are large, about the
size of a book while others are about the size of a cell phone. External hard drives can
be very useful for backing up important data and taking with you on the go since they
usually offer more than a jump drive
