General Info
Celebrating 40 Years of the
Religious Education Congress
Though this year marks our 40th Congress, the event really had its roots earlier. In
1956, the first Los Angeles CCD “Institute” was held at Mount Carmel High School
on Hoover Street in Los Angeles. Some 500 teachers and catechists attended the
two-day conference, listened to speakers and gained experience from other teach-
ers. The institutes grew in attendance each year and by 1967 it was apparent that
local schools could no longer handle the crowds and a new site was needed.
So it was in 1967 with the cooperation of the three dioceses of Los Angeles, Monterey-
Fresno and San Diego, the agenda for the first three-day “Congress” was set. The
purpose, as stated by officials: “The Southern California Confraternity Congress
hopes to provide an atmosphere of Christian unity ... and learning, where all who

Again, attendance began to outgrow the hotel’s facilities, and in 1970 Congress
moved to the much larger Anaheim Convention Center (February 20-22), where
registration was $5 for one day or per workshop; $10 for two days. The first day was
a Youth Conference for high school students only.
The March 26-28, 1971 Congress carried the theme “You Shall be my Witnesses to
the Ends of the Earth” (Acts 1:8), while the February 18-20, 1972, Congress was a
50th Jubilee celebration of the creation of the CCD in Los Angeles.
In 1973, the event was retitled the Religious Education Congress, and bilingual
themes were adopted in 1979.

Liturgy of the Hours & Prayer Service

The very earliest Christians gathered at dawn and again at dusk to sing psalms and hymns and to listen to
the Sacred Scriptures. We continue this ancient Church Liturgical tradition in Saturday’s Morning Prayer
to welcome the gift of a new day, as well as in Friday and Saturday Evening Prayer (sometimes known as
Vespers) to celebrate the Light that shines through the night’s darkness. In Night Prayer (also known as
Compline), we complete the Hours in prayer at the day’s end.

INFORMATION
NAME TAGS/TICKETS
Congress Name Tags are required to be worn at all
times during scheduled events. Tickets are neces-
sary for admittance into workshops and general ses-
sions.
TICKET EXCHANGE
You may exchange tickets for any open workshops
during the same period beginning at noon on the
Friday of Congress at the Registration Booth’s Ex-
change window, located in the Prefunction area.
Note: Any ticket can be used for sessions of the same
time in the Arena or Hall B.
SAVING SEATS
It is permissible to save seats up to 10 minutes be-
fore a scheduled function begins. After that time,
we ask that, in Christian love, you release these seats
for others. If any Congress volunteer requests that
you release seats that you are saving, please comply
with the direction given.
SMOKING
Smoking is not allowed in the Convention Center.
There are several outdoor courtyards where it is per-
mitted.
WORKSHOPS
All workshops are ticketed and no one will be ad-
mitted to any session without the proper ticket. Any
valid ticket will serve as admission to Arena or Hall
B workshops, but these sessions are not open to those
without tickets.
Our speakers are generously sharing their time and
talents with us. As a special courtesy to them, we
ask that you please arrive at the workshop location
prior to the scheduled start time. We remind you to
please quiet your pager and turn off cell phones.
All sessions will begin on time, and many speakers
have asked that no one be admitted after the session
has begun. Also, we ask you to avoid, as far as pos-
sible, leaving workshops during a presentation. Most
of the workshops will have a “natural” break time
when it would be less disruptive to the speaker and
to the other participants.
EMERGENCIES
In case of emergency, contact the nearest Congress
official wearing a red, white, blue striped ribbon; they
are in radio contact and can summon help quickly.
For life-threatening situations, please call 9-1-1.

Light cannot see inside things.

That is what the dark is for:
Minding the interior, That the searching of our minds
Nurturing the draw of growth Be equal to the oblique
Through places where death Crevices and corners where
In its own time turns into life. The mystery continues to dwell,
Concealed in fugitive light.
In the glare of neon times,
Let our eyes not be worn When we are confined inside

 ENDOWMENT FUND
The Religious Education Endowment Fund was established by the Office of Religious Education to support the on-
going training and formation of religious education leaders, particularly by making scholarships available for cate-
chetical leaders to pursue graduate studies. It is our hope that every Director of Religious Education will be given the
opportunity to receive a master’s degree in Religious Education/Religious Studies.
Any additional contribution through mail-in registrations and those who registered online could contribute to this
Fund. As of January 29, 537 people responded with contributions totaling $6,521. We sincerely appreciate and
acknowledge their contributions. The fund is currently enabling 15 students to pursue a master’s degree in Religious
Education, and you will be happy to know that several have already graduated!
