A View From the Board Free Concerts Arent Free

It actually costs quite a bit in order to ofer a free UPO concert to the
public. Each concert costs about $5,000 to produce. However, that
number would be a lot higher if it werent for the in-kind support that
UPO receives from Urbana Park District, Urbana School District
#116, and other local businesses.

About half of the cost of tonights concert was funded by a generous
grant from the City of Urbana Arts Council.

Because tonights concert is free, there is no income from ticket sales to make up the shortfall.
So where does the money come from? Take a look at the list of Pops Stars in this program. Teir
donations helped keep the ticket price for the June concert afordable and make this concert
free.

I hope youll enjoy the music tonight and appreciate the unique educational opportunities that
Urbana Pops Orchestra provides to its student musicians so much so that youll consider adding
your name to the list of Pops Stars. A donation of any size is greatly appreciated. You might also
choose to sponsor a musician with a gif of $250 or more. Talk to any board member if youd
like more information on ways you can help keep this concert free.

Gustav Johnson Composition Contest Winner

Gustav Johnson is originally from Chenoa and is a senior at Illinois State University studying
music education. His primary instruments are bass clarinet and clarinet/saxophone. Johnson
said that he became interested in composing afer taking a music theory course at ISU. What
began as a means of studying and practicing the concepts we learned in class quickly grew into a
hunger to explore the vast landscape of possibilities that unfolded as I delved more deeply,
Johnson said. He has since written numerous songs and works for groups ranging in size from
chamber ensembles to a full wind bands and symphony orchestras, including tonights winning
piece in the senior division of UPOs composition contest.
About the piece Johnson said, Te piece as a whole tells the story of brave individuals and soci-
eties pioneering new frontiers. Tese frontiers are comfortable at frst, but ofen confict arises as
opposing views vie for dominanceand subsequently for freedom. Although it is never truly
clear which idea wins out, in the end there is always resolution, a peace in the cycle of confict
and revolution.
As a music educator, I believe one of the strongest educational values
we can provide is to practice the art of making music alongside our
students. They get to see we practice what we preach.

Celebrating Greg Chew (19502014)

Tonights concert is dedicated to Greg Chew, who passed away on May 14, 2014 at the age of
63 afer a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Chew was a popular English teacher and beloved drama director at Urbana High School
for 35 years. He directed over 100 plays (never repeating one) in this auditorium and retired in
May 2010. Since retiring, he worked to raise funds for the renovation of this auditorium and
served on the City of Urbana Arts Council. Te grant that Urbana Pops received from the Arts
Council this year is the reason that tonights concert is being ofered for free.

One of Gregs roles on the Arts Council was to host Art Now! on UPTV. Last August, Greg
featured Urbana Pops Orchestra on the 30-minute program. Check out episode #37 at
http://urbanaillinois.us/uptv.

Greg and his wife Debbie have attended UPO concerts and supported the Pops since its begin-
ning, for which UPO is very grateful. Greg will be remembered for his brilliant mind, kind gen-
erous nature, great sense of humor, and his love for literature and theater. He was a great exam-
ple of how to live a fulflled life.

Contributions to the Greg Chew Teatre Scholarship Fund can be made payable to Urbana
School District #116/Greg Chew Teatre Scholarship and mailed to 205 N. Race St., Urbana,
IL 61801.
