Steps to Success

Course content
Unit 1 Classroom management
Participants will learn about engaging and motivating their learners, anticipating anticipate problems
learners may encounter related to classroom management, how to set up pair and group work and how to
evaluate their teaching.
Unit 2 Planning
Participants will learn how to write lesson plans to meet the needs of learners and to achieve clear
objectives, how to plan the time for lesson activities, and use a variety of resources and activities.
Unit 3 Presentation and practice
Participants will work on how to present grammar and vocabulary, learn about what learners need to know
about language, and practice writing lesson plans to teach grammar.
Unit 4 Effective communication
Participants will investigate the different listening skills and how to plan lessons to teach them with realistic
activities. They will also learn about speaking activities for the classroom and how to make communicative
lessons accessible to learners with sight or hearing problems.
Unit 5 Written communication
Participants will investigate the teaching of reading and writing skills in the English language classroom,
learn about four principles for designing writing task, and how to evaluate learners writing.
Unit 6 Assessment
Participants will learn about the basic concepts of assessment, testing and evaluation and how to use
assessment to help individual learners progress, including activities that encourage self-assessment. They
will get practice in using descriptors and criteria to assess learners.
Unit 7 Teaching culture
Participants will learn about the concept of intercultural competence and how to use a range of methods
and materials to investigate intercultural issues in the classroom, as well as teach aspects of UK culture
from an intercultural perspective.
Unit 8 Visual aids
Participants will learn to apply learning styles to their own learners and lesson planning and practice, and
use classroom equipment and visuals effectively to enhance learning.

Unit 9 Memorable learning
Participants will learn how the brain works to enable learning to take place and the importance of pleasure
to learning. They will investigate the pedagogical value of warmers, games and songs and how to use a
variety of these effectively in the classroom.
Unit 10 Professional development
Participants will learn about the British Councils CPD framework and apply it to their own development.
They will also learn how to apply a reflective approach to their professional development, identify
organisations and activities that enhance professional development, set their own development objectives
and devise an action plan to achieve them.
