E-Folio: Essential V and the scenarios
Essential V: Healthcare Policy, Finance, and Regulatory Environments focuses on the
importance of learning definite policies related to the questions of quality and safety in relation
to the nursing practice. Thus, according to the Essential V, healthcare policy shapes the nature,
quality, and safety of the practice environment and all professional nurses have the responsibility
to participate in the political process and advocate for patients, families, communities, the
nursing profession (American Association of Colleges of Nursing. 2008, p. 20). It is important
for the baccalaureate to discuss the nursing practice within the larger context while following the
Essential V statements (Bell, 2001).
Exemplar
To illustrate the role of the Essential V for the nursing practice, I have selected cases
related to the survivors after a plane crash and the moon equipment failure case. These cases
provided insight on role of the nurse in handling emergencies and having a rationale for every
decision made. The case regarding plane crush survival offers a very complicated moral dilemma
concerning the choice of the people who should have the right to use the equipment (a life raft)
in order to survive. The situation demands the focus on the almost impossible choice which
should be made, thus, the case helps choose the strategy to act reasonably in case when the
supplies are limited and will not suffice for the entire team of survivors with references to the
regulatory policies and issues of safety. The given cases, especially the moon equipment failure,
might seem unrealistic to an average person; however, the key specifics of the nursing practice in
relation to the healthcare policies are introduced.

Reflection
Therefore, the given cases contribute to the better understanding of the duties of the
nurse. Both cases shows that a good nurse must not only be an expert in his or her field of
nursing but also specialize in a number of other issues which are associated with the necessity to
respond to the regulatory policies (Meister et al., 2002; Oermann, 2002). I have realized with
references to the cases that following the set lists of guidelines and policies, a nurse should
design the best suitable model for action, even if the action means survival. Nurses have to deal
with very complex and often controversial dilemmas and should act appropriately according to
the Essential V. Having good knowledge of emergency preparedness is also a key responsibility
of every nurse, one never expects an emergency but when one happens it is important for nurses
to know their roles in saving lives.

Individual Equipment Assignment Worksheet (Exemplar)
Items that may help you survive on the Moon:
As nurses, we are required to protect the safety of the clients at all times (American nurses
association, 2001). This situation may require the nurse to choose items that will ensure survival
of the patient and maintenance of the condition of the patient.

Life raft - a self-inflatable flotation device
Rank: 14
Reason: The provided text does not indicate presence of water on the
moon's surface, so a flotation device may not be necessary.
Two 45.5-kilogram (100-pound) tanks of oxygen - pressurized
tanks of oxygen
Rank: 1
Reason: We will require oxygen supply that is enough throughout the
navigation. The oxygen will also add to the weight of the individuals to replace the low gravity.
Humans require oxygen to survive.

Space blanket - a thin sheet of plastic material that is coated with a
metallic reflecting layer
Rank: 13
Reason: This will protect the members from radiation to ensure that they get to their destination
safely.

E-FOLIO 6

Lights with solar-powered rechargeable batteries - portable lights powered by solar batteries
Rank: 11
Reason: it will be necessary if we want to continue navigating at night.

Signal mirror - a handheld mirror
Rank: 12
Reason: It is not as important as we already have a solar powered
radio transmitter though the two could work together.
38 liters (10 gallons) of water - a container of water
Rank: 2
Reason: The people need the water to rehydrate them and to prepare
their food.
First aid kit - a basic first aid kit with pain medication and medicine
for infection
Rank: 9
Reason: The moon is made up of sharp, glassy particles and it is highly likely that an injury can
occur and the first aid box may be needed.

Food concentrate - dehydrated food to which water is added
Rank: 3
Reason: The food has water that will serve to hydrate people so they
may not need to carry water. It will also provide them with the energy, mineral, vitamins and
nutrients.
E-FOLIO 7

Magnetic compass - a tool that uses a magnetic field to determine
direction
Rank: 5
Reason: The magnetic compass will guide in the direction taken on the moon.

Solar-powered radio receiver-transmitter - a communication tool
powered by the sun.
Rank: 6
Reason: This will aid in communication and thus its importance.
Map of the Moons surface - a map showing the Moons terrain
Rank: 10

Reason: It is not as important as we already have a compass.
15 meters (about 50 feet) of nylon rope - manufactured rope
Rank: 8
Reason: The terrain of the moon is composed of highlands and they will
need a rope in order to be able to navigate.
Parachute - a large piece of silk cloth
Rank: 15
Reason: It is not advisable to use a parachute due to the low gravity in
the moon

E-FOLIO 8

Space suit repair kit - materials to repair tiny holes in the fabric
Rank: 4
Reason: The sharp objects on the surface of the moon may tear the suit. This may impair
movement and even gaseous exchange thus the repair needs to be instant.

Box of matches - wooden sticks with sulfur-treated heads
Rank: 7
Reason: The people need to keep warm when the temperatures are very
low, this will enable lighting of light.

Individual People Survival Assignment (Exemplar)
Plane Crash Four Choices and Rationale:
Ace Browning- He has ensured that the plane landed safely and possesses diverse experiences as
a pilot. More so, he is also is a volunteer pilot with a mercy mission that drops medical supplies
and food to people in areas faced with crisis. His drinking problem is not an issue as it is not a
fact it is just perceived.
Geoff McGraw-He is 57 years old and learned. In addition, he has a well-established career as a
plastic surgeon that benefits many people since he supports plastic surgery for children with
deformed faces through his foundation. Although his family can do without him, his patients and
the children he supports need him.
Professor Mu Chado- He has a well-established career in Microbiology and does not have a
family. HIV is a worldwide problem and finding a solution to this problem will save many lives.
His solution has already shown positive progress on animals and it is important to save him and
allow him to complete the project.
Patience Butler-She is young and an active volunteer. In addition, she has children who may
suffer trauma of losing both their parents and a sibling at the same time. Rescuing her will ensure
that she can be with the rest of the children and also finish up her plans of publishing a book
intended to aid the indigenous people.
Ethical Viewpoint/Framework and Rationale from Text Context- It was difficult for me to
make a decision on who to choose. Age, position in life and the patients wishes are some factors
used to determine who gets a resource when they are scarce (Pozgar, 2013, slide40, chapter 1). I
also explored the ethical problem solving framework in making this decision by asking myself
the following questions. What benefits and what harms will each course of action produce, and
E-FOLIO 11

which alternative will lead to the best overall consequences? Which course of action treats
everyone the same, except where there is a morally justifiable reason not to, and does not show
favouritism or describe discrimination? Which course of action advances the common good?
Which course of action develops moral virtues? Finally I analyzed the issue by using the
utilitarian approach; I identified the various courses of actions available to me i.e. choosing only
4 people out of the whole casualties. Secondly, I considered who will be affected by each action
and what benefits or harms will be derived from each. And thirdly, I choose the action that will
produce the greatest benefits and the least harm. The virtue framework also helped and guided
me towards making these decisions because it assumes that there are certain ideals toward which
we should strive, which provide for the full development of our humanity. These ideals are
discovered through thoughtful reflection on what kind of people we have the potential to
become. In dealing with an ethical problem using the virtue approach, we might ask, what kind
of person should I be? What will promote the development of character within me and my
community?
