Daylight Saving Time DST

Daylight Saving Time often referred to as "Summer Time", "DST" or

"Daylight Savings Time" is a way of making better use of the daylight in the
evenings by setting the clocks forward one hour during the longer days of
summer, and back again in the fall.
Clocks back or forward?
The clock moves ahead (= losing one hour in the s!ring when DST starts,
and falls back one hour (= gaining one hour when DST ends in the fall. To
remember which way the clock goes, kee! in mind one of these sayings"
spring forward, fall back or spring ahead, fall behind.

"hy observe DST?
'any countries observe DST, and many do not. 'any countries use DST to
make better use of the daylight in the evenings. 'any !eo!le believe that
DST could be linked to fewer road accidents and in.uries. The e,tra hour of
daylight in the evening is said to give children more social time and can boost
the tourism industry because it increases the amount of outdoor activities.
DST is also used to save energy and reduce artificial light needed during the
evening hours / clocks are set one hour ahead during the s!ring, and one
hour back to standard time in the autumn. 0owever, many studies disagree
about DST1s energy savings and while some studies show a !ositive
outcome, others do not.
2t is difficult to !redict what will ha!!en with Daylight Saving Time in the future.
The daylight saving date in many countries may change from time to time due
to s!ecial events or conditions. The 3nited States, +anada and some other
countries e,tended DST in %445. The new start date is the second Sunday in
'arch (!reviously the first Sunday in (!ril through to the first Sunday in
)ovember (!reviously the last Sunday in 6ctober.
#rief history of DST
7en.amin 8ranklin first suggested Daylight Saving Time in #59:, but modern
DST was not !ro!osed until #9;& when an entomologist from )ew <ealand,
=eorge >ernon 0udson, !resented a !ro!osal for a two?hour daylight saving
shift to the *ellington @hiloso!hical Society.
The conce!tion of DST was mainly credited to an Anglish builder, *illiam
*illett in #;4&, when he !resented the idea to advance the clock during the
summer months. 0is !ro!osal was !ublished two years later and introduced
to the 0ouse of +ommons in 8ebruary #;49. The first Daylight Saving 7ill was
e,amined by a select committee but was never made into a law. 2t was not
until *orld *ar 2, in #;#B, that DST was ado!ted and im!lemented by several
countries in Auro!e who initially re.ected the idea. There is more information
about the history of DST on our website.
$s DST always one hour ahead of
standard time?

been several variants on this, such as half ad.ustment ($4 minutes or double
ad.ustment (two hours, and ad.ustments of %4 and :4 minutes have also
been used. ( two?hour ad.ustment was used in several countries during the
#;:4s and elsewhere at times.
