Grant will preserve musical heritage
SINGLE Gloucester, a folk
archive project developed by
Gloucester Traditions, has
been awarded a Heritage
Lottery Grant of 27,000 to
publish songs from Glouces-
tershire and South Glouces-
tershire online.
The old county has a rich
history of folk music and
song and some of our local
songs are known the world
over, but there are hundreds
more Gloucestershire songs
that lie forgotten and unpub-
lished in manuscript and in
sound archives. Gloucester-
shire Traditions have a plan
to put this right and publish
all of the known songs and
tunes from the county on an
easily accessible website.
There are over 1,000 folk
songs and tunes collected
in the county, says Gwilym
Davies, one of the instigators
of the project, who knows
how many of these will be-
come the popular songs of
the future?
The project is ambitious
and is the first of its kind
anywhere in England. It will
transcribe each song into
easy-to-download formats, in-
cluding songsheets, MP3 and
MIDI files.
Anybody interested in fam-
ily history will also benefit
from the website, as Carol
Davies explains, With each
song we are also research-
ing the person from whom
it was collected. This means
that you may find one of your
ancestors is represented and
learn a song that was sung in
your family a hundred years
ago. In many instances we
have original field record-
ings, so you can actually hear
the voices of history.
The project starts now, with
training for volunteers to
learn how to transcribe the
songs into different formats.
The next few months will be
focused on bringing the mate-
rial together and building the
website. Anyone who would
like to volunteer or find
out more about the project

String Quartet play North Nibley
NORTHNibley resident and viola-play-
er AndrewWhite is performing with
the Voller String Quartet in his home
village next week.
The concert is at St Martins Church,
North Nibley, on Wednesday, August 20
(7.30pm) to raise funds to help sustain
the fabric of the church as well as to
celebrate the work of local musicians.
The Voller String Quartet formed in
1977, when four professional string
players found themselves teaching for
the same music service. They met every
Friday, formed the quartet and
rehearsed in their lunch hour. They are
nowbased in Bristol, taking their name
fromthe maker of the leaders violin.
Composer Trevor Jones is a member
of the Severnside composers alliance.
The quartet will be playing his Border
Songs and Dark Music for string
quartet and Mezzo with guest soloist,
soprano Zarah Hible.
The quartet will also perform

tre companies.
Times have changed, and
most performing groups
have plenty of women and
girls.
But the girls of Your Call
Theatre Group, based in
Thornbury, are finding them-
selves heavily outnumbered
by the boys.
Ours is a small, friendly
and happy group, currently
with 14 members aged be-
tween 13 and 19, but only four
of them are girls. Its unu-
sual, and were not sure quite
how it happened,said chair-
man Jill Dimond.
Everyone is welcome,
and everyone takes an ac-
tive part. In our shows, boys
sometimes take female roles
and vice versa. It really
doesnt matter, and the shows
are always of a high stand-
ard.

stage needs
girls too
SIX years ago Sam Sweeney,
fiddle player with Bellow-
head, bought a violin.
It had all the appearance
of a new instrument but the
label inside gave the date
1915 and the name Richard S
Howard.
Research revealed that the
violin had been made but
never finished by a luthier
and occasional music hall
performer from Leeds called
Richard Spencer Howard.
He had been conscripted in
1916 at the age of 35 and two
years later was killed during
the battle of Messines Ridge.
The pieces of his violin
were given to his daughter
Rose in a manila envelope
and she kept themall her life.
On her death, the parts
were sold and the violin was
finally finished by luthier
Roger Claridge in 2007.
The discovery of this his-
tory inspired Sam to create
a multimedia performance
telling the incredible story of
the fiddle that it took nearly
100 years to complete.
Collaborating with award-
winning story-teller Hugh
Lupton, fellow Bellowhead
bandmate Paul Sartin and
acclaimed concertina player
Rob Harbron, Made in the
Great War brings the reality
of the First World War into
2014, as Sam performs the
show with the actual fiddle.

encourage and help people to start community
businesses that will breathe new life into their
areas and create jobs. You will be an enthusiastic,
conident and articulate manager promoting the
project nationally and assisting in the development
of an online community platform and peer to
peer support programme. You will have in-depth
knowledge of social and digital media. You
will have a good understanding of social and
community enterprise, community development
and experience of working with a variety of
partners and stakeholders.

ships has risen by more
than 15 per cent in the
last year.
In March 2013 the num-
ber of 16- and 17-year
olds in apprenticeships
was 41,738. This year, in
March, there were 49,228.
Apprenticeships have
changed a lot over the
last fewyears.
They were re-designed
with help frommore
than 400 businesses.
Increasingly, appren-
ticeships are being seen
as a respected alterna-
tive to academic study.
What is an apprentice-
ship?
An apprenticeship is a
job with training. Youll
be able to earn money
while youre learning
and have paid holidays.
If you live in England,
are over 16 years old and
not in full-time educa-
tion, you can apply.
What can I learn and
how long will it take?
Apprenticeships take
between one and four
years to complete,
depending on the type.
And they arent just
available in engineering
and plumbing there
are vacancies in 1,500 job
roles fromfinancial
advice to veterinary
nursing to accountancy.
How will an appren-
ticeship benefit me?
Firstly, youll be achiev-
ing a respected work-
based qualification.
Youll also earn money
while youre learning
and working.
Most apprenticeships
give you a wage of at
least 170 a week.
Also, employers really
value apprenticeships.
They knowthat if
youve got one, youll
have the skills they want.
In 2013, ICMResearch
conducted a survey.
It found that employers
think qualified appren-
tices are 15 per cent more
ready for work than
those with other qualifi-
cations.
Once youve completed
your apprenticeship, you
can also collect UCAS
points or go on to higher
education at college or
university.
Do I have to pay for
an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are
fully funded by the
National Apprenticeship
Service (NAS) if you are
aged 16-18.
If you are aged 19-23
they are funded half by
the NAS and half by the
employer.
If you are 24 or over,
you have to contribute.
