Young Professionals Programme 2013


Information Sheet


The Young Professionals Programme (YPP) has two objectives to bring fresh talent to the United Nations
from un- and under-represented countries, and to recognise talent already in the Organization among
staff members in the General Service and related categories, as well as in the Field Service category (FS-
5 and below).

Through a competitive examination, successful candidates will be placed at the P-1 or P-2 level with
access to special training opportunities. The same examination is taken by Secretariat staff and external
applicants.
In 2013, the YPP examination will take place on 3 December 2013 in the following job families:

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
External applicants who wish to sit the examination must:
be 32 years or younger at the end of the examination year (born on or after 1 January 1981);
be a national of a participating country (the list of participating countries is published annually and
varies from year to year);
hold at least a first-level university degree, relevant to the job family in which they would like to
take the examination. Please refer to the Careers Portal for the list of acceptable fields of study for
each job family;
be fluent in either English or French (knowledge of other official United Nations language is an
asset).

PLEASE NOTE
External applicants can only apply to one job family. Submitting applications for more
than one job family will result in automatic disqualification.
You must apply with the correct Job Opening ID, otherwise your application will
automatically be rejected and you will no longer be considered for the YPP exam this
year.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Staff can apply to participate in the YPP as an external candidate (G to N). If they:
are a staff member of the United Nations Secretariat serving in the General Service and related
categories including Field Service category, FS-5 and below;
have a valid UN appointment until at least until 3 June 2014. (At a minimum, you will need to
attach a letter from your Executive Office stating the intent to renew your contract until 3 June
2014 as part of your application.);
are a national of a participating country (the list of participating countries is published annually and
varies from year to year);
are 32 years or younger at the end of the examination year (born on or after 1 January 1981);
have a rating of at least successfully meets performance expectations in your last available
performance assessments. (Please attach last available performance assessments to your
application.);
hold at least a first-level university degree, relevant to the job family in which you would like to
take the examination. Please refer to the Careers Portal (www.careers.un.org) for the list of
acceptable fields of study for each job family. (The requirement for a three-year first level
university degree may be waived for applicants who have post-secondary academic qualifications
and who have five years of continuous service in the United Nations Secretariat by 31 December
1989.);
are fluent in either English or French (knowledge of other official United Nations languages is an
asset).

PLEASE NOTE
If you are a temporary contract holder in the General Service and related categories and
would like to apply for the 2013 G to N examination, you will be allowed to apply with a
staff account in inspira on an exceptional basis. You will be able to create an inspira
account with your UN ID and email address (if you already have one with your UN ID and
email address, you can use it). This account will allow you to apply for one of the above
JOs, if you meet all of the eligibility requirements. Please also note that you will need to
build a new application and profile if you have already an external account. You will not
be allowed to apply to any other jobs with this new ID, but you will get a message saying
This job opening is not available from this account. Please log into inspira as an
external applicant.
External applicants can only apply to one job family. Submitting applications for more
than one job family will result in automatic disqualification.

have a minimum of five years continuous service in the Secretariat at the time you apply for the
examination, excluding any service in separately administered funds or programmes. (Short
breaks in service of not more than six months may be allowed at the discretion of the Central
Examinations Board);
have a rating of at least successfully meets performance expectations in your last two
performance assessments. (Please attach your last two performance assessments to your online
application.);
hold at least a first-level university degree, relevant to the job family in which you would like to
take the examination. Please refer to the Careers Portal (www.careers.un.org) for the list of
acceptable fields of study for each job family. (The requirement for a three-year first level

Dont forget to attach to your application your last two performance assessments and a
letter from your Executive Office (if needed). Incomplete applications will not be
considered.
Applications submitted to a wrong Job Opening will automatically be screened out and
no longer be considered.
