everend Robert N. Burkins, Sr. was born in Rock
Hill, South Carolina. He graduated from Wofford
College, Spartanburg, South Carolina, and the
Interdenominational Theological Center (Johnson C. Smith
Seminary), Atlanta, Georgia.
Reverend Burkins has served as senior pastor of the Elmwood
United Presbyterian Church since May 1987. Under his
leadership, Elmwood has grown from approximately 300 to its
current membership of nearly 1,000. Combining evangelistic
outreach, innovative worship, a strong discipleship emphasis and
enthusiastic lay involvement in ministries, Elmwood has become
one of the strongest and fastest growing African American
Presbyterian Churches in America. Elmwood has a decentralized
ministry style that emphasizes equipping lay leadership for
ministry. More than 40 trained lay ministers provide spiritual and
pastoral leadership in the church. Many community outreach
ministries have been started by lay leadership teams, including the
Harambee Community Development Initiative, Inc., a not-for-
profit social service and economic development corporation. Prior
to the Elmwood pastorate, Reverend Burkins served as pastor
of the Woodlawn Presbyterian Church, Jacksonville, Florida. He
is married to the former Wendy Zimmerman and they have two
children, Alaythia and Robert, Jr.

T
his day, sixty years ago, was opening day for
Major League Baseball. This day, sixty years
ago, Jackie Robinson broke down the walls
of segregation and became the first Black player to
play in what has been called, America’s pastime.
Jackie Robinson was 28 years old when he joined
the Dodgers. Robinson also left behind a number
of players in the Negro League who may have been
better players.
As he dominated the field, Robinson, simply
because of his skin color, received threats and insults.
That was sixty years ago. Sixty years later, when
African Americans dominate many of the three
major sports - baseball, basketball and football - the
same insults hurled at Jackie are now hurled at Black
players today. In my own lifetime, I have heard the
noted Howard Cosell call Art Monk a monkey. I
have heard another sportscaster talk about how
Black folks are bred to be athletes. I have heard Rush
Limbaugh (on drugs or off…I don’t know) doubt
the intelligence and IQ of a Black quarterback,
named Donovan McNabb, in what was possibly the
best season of his career. And now, we have, again,
the hurling of insults toward a number of college
student athletes by a fool who calls the Rutgers
women’s basketball team a bunch of “nappy-headed
hos.”
While I am upset, I am not surprised. Sports
in America are but a microcosm of American
society and ideology. The dehumanization of black
bodies is still an American pastime. The inhuman
treatment and lack of respect given to Black people
is still America’s pastime. America was founded
on the dehumanization of Black folks, and it still
operates with a vision that does not see Black
people as human. Again, I am upset about Don
Imus’ statement, but not surprised. I am also not
surprised because of the hegemony that exists in

the media industry. The major networks are run by
right-winged conservatives who still see Black people
as subhuman, and portray Black people as such.
Dr. Asa Hilliard dealt with this in his lecture on the
first Sunday in February. CBS, which broadcasts
Imus’ show, is owned by Viacom, one of six media
conglomerates (Vivendi, AOL Time Warner, Disney,
News Corporation, Viacom, and Bertlesman), that
control 97% of everything we read in print media,
hear in radio media, or see via television media.
What was even more upsetting was the trite apology
given. Don Imus stated that the context in which these
comments were given was that of comedy. Imus also
stated that he shouldn’t be castigated because Black
people use these words among their own people.
He says that he isn’t a racist, but his own admit-
tance of using these words as comedy indicate that he
is a racist and doesn’t even know it. There are none as
blind as those who will not see, as the African proverb
states. Racism is prejudice, plus power. Imus uttered
the words of prejudice for all to hear, and because
he is part of a privileged class of people, he is being
empowered to keep his show after only a two-week
suspension, which begins tomorrow.
Also let it be known, that the use of any word to
describe women as anything other than the beautiful
creatures that God created them to be by any group
of people is unacceptable. Moreover, it is a cop-out
on Imus’ part to use that as an excuse for him to use
those words. His apology was not an apology at all.
It was nothing but a reasoning and justification as
to why he used that expression, and he will probably
continue to describe Black folks in derogatory ways.
Please remember that this is not his first time and will
not be his last time.
Imus’ two-week suspension only shines the light
on a larger truth. Just as hurricane Katrina ripped the
covers off the racism which is engrained in the fabric
of this country, Imus’ two-week suspension does

the same. The fact of the matter is that there is still a
double standard in this country.
I have quoted her before, but I must quote her
again in this instance. Dr. Marimba Ani has coined the
term, “Rhetorical Ethic.” Rhetorical Ethic, according
to Dr. Ani is defined as, “culturally structured Euro-
pean hypocrisy. It is a statement framed in terms of
acceptable moral behavior towards others that is meant
for rhetorical purposes only. Its purpose is to disarm
intended victims of European cultural and political
imperialism. It is meant for ‘export’ only. It is not
intended to have significance within the culture. Its es-
sence is its deceptive effect in the service of European
Power.” Had this been a Black man calling a white
group derogatory names, that person would have been
fired immediately with no opportunity for explanation.

Spare me one final word. We just celebrated
Resurrection Sunday, when Jesus was raised by God
with all power in His hands. In spite of what the
Roman government tried to do to Him, and in spite
of how they tried to confine Him, Jesus broke out
of every box into which they tried to put Him. That
is to say, don’t you let anybody or anything confine
you or define you, for it is God that hath made you,
and God is the only one who can define you. Know
thyself! Know thy God!
