FAQs & FACT SHEET
1) Why do we need to move the elementary school?
Three wings make up the current Indian Creek Elementary School (a 1939 wing, a
1957 wing, and a 1986 wing), and each of these areas need continuous renovation.
The school building has been well maintained and has had cosmetic improvements, but after many years of daily use
by hundreds of students, building systems and structures wear out and need to be updated.
It is Difficult to teach effectively in classrooms that were not built for todays methods of instruction.
We need to address safety and security concerns, technology infrastructure, equality issues, and support research-
based, best instructional practices.

2) What will be done in the ICES/ICIS addition project?

We will:
! Add 21 academic classrooms for grades K-2 with the average classroom space being 900 sq. ft., which is bigger than the
884 sq. ft. of classroom space at the current ICES building.
! Add 7 special area classrooms space for effectively meeting the academic needs of our special education students, media
center, music, physical education, and art classrooms totaling 13,600 sq. ft.
! Expand the current cafeteria and kitchen areas to accommodate K-2 students.
! Add an administrative office area, ADA compliant restrooms, and storage space for a combined 3,640 sq. ft.
! The new addition will be 28 classrooms with approximately 53,628 sq. ft. of building usage. This is slightly smaller than
the present elementary building but this new addition will provide more usable space.

3) How will this project impact my taxes?
There will be NO increase in your taxes. See the following chart that explains our Debt Service Fund.
By dovetailing new debt
service payments with
existing payments to keep
total annual payments level
year by year, Debt Service
Fund Tax Rate should remain
level at around 2014 rate of
$.3073 (Johnson County).
Even if this project doesnt
proceed, the school
corporation will need to
continue expensive
maintenance, repair, and
upgrades to the current ICES
building, which will require
additional bonds and expenditures from the Capital Projects Fund, which over time will necessitate more property tax dollars.

4) How can I support the petition drive?
The dates of the petition/remonstrance race are from August 28
th
to September 26
th
.
You can support the school addition in several ways:
! Sign the yellow petition in support of school renovation.
! Talk to your friends and neighbors and encourage them to support this project.
! Volunteer to help with the yellow petition drive.
! Learn and study the facts of this project.
! Submit donations at Mutual Savings Bank to the Creek Cares 4 Kids account.

5) Why do some people oppose the petition drive?
Some of the areas of concern that weve heard are the following:
o An increase in property taxes (not true, refer to #3);
o What will be done with a vacant building (refer to #6); and
o This project has been voted down before by taxpayers (In 2008, that was a much larger project that included other side
projects besides an elementary school, unlike this smaller, more efficient proposal.).
o This building addition is a want not a need (The need to improve our facilities is clear, and the school corporation
has developed a very responsible and cost-effective plan that serves the long-term needs of our school community.).
o This project will cost more than were being told (The school corporations building plans and financial analysis has
been developed by outstanding experts in their fields.).
o The school didnt provide us with the information (During the past several months, the school corporation has openly
shared this project at several community forums, a public hearing, website information, and numerous phone calls to
public stakeholders.).

6) If this ICES/ICIS building addition moves forward, then what will happen to the present building?
Some concerns have been asked about what will happen to the current elementary building if this addition occurs.
Legally, the building must be vacant for two consecutive years before anything can be done with it.
Conversations could occur between the Town of Trafalgar and the school corporation to develop a partnership, such as a
community center or another joint venture that would improve economic development.
It is a proven fact that if high-quality education programming and structures exists, then a vibrant, strong, and successful
community exists too.
Great Schools + Great Education = Great Community

7) Couldnt we do this project for less money?
Anyone who believes that the school corporation can cut corners and does it for less does not completely understand the
current issues.
If the school corporation just slaps on a coat of paint on the elementary school and does cosmetic repairs, the structural,
safety, and security problems, like entry points and structural features, wont go away.
If we do minor repairs now, we would have to continue to seek more revenue through loans in order to maintain a safe,
healthy, secure, fun, and productive learning environment.
It is much better to build a quality elementary addition that will last for decades.
It is far more responsible to fund quality construction that can stand up to the wear-and-tear of constant use by hundreds of
school children and that will provide our students and our teachers with the high quality facilities they need and deserve.
This project will reduce transportation costs, fuel costs, and traffic flow congestion because bus drop-off and pick-up
points would occur at one location for K-5 students instead of two locations.
Finally, its best to begin this project now while interest rates and construction costs are lower than normal. This is the
right thing to do for our students and for the community as a whole.
