STEM Forward 4 Kids focuses on developing innovation
and critical thinking

H
UGE opportunities exist for our
country when our children are
empowered and encouraged at a
young age to develop and refine skills that
drive the never ending wave of innovation,
says Karen Gianfrancisco (nee Browne)
the Founder of STEM Forward 4 Kids, an
organization dedicated to accelerating
development of essential innovation skills
such as critical thinking and intellectual
curiosity amongst tomorrows leaders.
With over 20 years of experience in the
workforce solutions consulting arena,
Karen saw firsthand the massive talent
shortage in the areas of engineering
and technology in our country. This
observation combined with the lagging
science and math scores for U.S. children
is her inspiration for STEM Forward 4
Kids. The program focuses on enhancing
childrens experiences within the
critical domains of Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math.
STEM Forward offers year round after-
school and Saturday enrichment programs
that are geared towards providing a
fun, engaging and hands-on approach
to inquiry based learning. Children in
Kindergarden through 6th grade can enroll
in the fall session that begins the week
of September 22. Enrichment programs
include Science, Science Everywhere,
Robotics, Minecraft Modding, Green
Energy, How to Create an App, and Lets
Get Coding.
The after school and Saturday programs
will be held at St. Luke Parish School
in River Forest and open to all students.
Therese Craig, Principal at St. Luke is
extremely excited to partner with STEM
Forward 4 Kids as it is imperative
that our children think scientifically
and mathematically while incorporating
technology and engineering skills into their
daily lives.
Lets face it, Gianfrancisco says, 40%
of the companies that were at the top of
the Fortune 500 in the year 2000 are no
longer on the list in 2010. Our children
are facing one of the most dynamic and
exciting times as they prepare to enter the
workforce and it will be essential that they
embrace critical thinking in whatever field
they choose. My vision is that through
our enrichment programs, children will
embrace their own inquisitive style that
they will carry forward in all learning
experiences.
Whether it is building a volcano with
elephant toothpaste, creating their
own windmill or understanding how to
take their ideas and transfer them to
a computer program, Gianfrancisco is
focused on getting children to ask the
important questions of How? and Why? If
we can encourage this pathway of thinking
early on, she asserts, children will be
more successful in being innovators
of technology and not just simple users
of technology. At the end of 2013, an
important game changer occurred there
are now more mobile connected devices
than people on earth. Gianfrancisco
believes that it is essential to
enrich the experiences that
children are engaged in so
as to significantly impact
how they participate in the
workforce going forward.
Gianfrancisco has been
recognized as an industry
leader in the workforce
solutions consulting arena
and most recently served
as President of the global
workforce consulting
company, Advantage xPO,
a subsidiary of the fourth
largest HR professional services
company in the world. I am
extremely thankful for the education
and enrichment programs I received
while growing up in the Oak Park and
River Forest area. This is my way to
re-invest in the community that helped
shaped my future.

Help your Child get Better Grades
Get Organized & Stay Organized
Become Self Condent
How can this new school year
be a better one for your child?
I
t is a new school year. Make sure it
starts out as best as possible for your
student. A good education means a good
life for your child, and Dr. Bills Learning
Centers offer professional help. We are not
just a homework helper. Too often parents
of students with special education needs,
or bad school attitude, or heavy family
issues cant nd affordable tutors to help
their struggling second to tenth graders.
Universities or Social Service Associations
are worth seeking out but have a long waiting
list. You need an alternative opportunity
for special services that is here, in your
neighborhood.
The sad news of failing grades or low self-
esteem might cause your student to suffer by
repeating a benchmark school year and can
jeopardize his or her chances for a select
high school acceptance.
The bad news of a bad report card doesnt
stop for your high school student because,
as most teachers and parents know, the
rst year sets the tone for the rest of high
school! Now every assignment and test
counts because your childs future is on
the line. These days, prospects for college
scholarships and good paying jobs are bad
and worse. Time doesnt stop even if the
lies of many government leaders try to paint
a rosy picture of the countrys future. You
know the truth that by 10th grade the issues
that lead to academic failure, dropout, and
a lifetime of learning disability have gone
too far for your children. You have to get
help now! Have you thought about or tried
school interventions, doctors, hospitals, boot
camps, after-school programs, bribes or even
threats, but they didnt or wont help?
You need the best that professionals can
offer without paying a hardship-causing
price for it. The latest research shows that
specialized, intensive, motivating, and
culturally relevant tutoring can turn around
failures best identied after 1st grade. We
have it at Dr. Bills Learning Centers. We also
focus on students with learning disabilities:
LD, ADD, anxiety and poor motivation.
Dr. Bills Learning Centers offer a family
focused, holistic, specialized tutoring
program with an interdisciplinary team
dedicated to improving the educational
outcomes for children like yours. Unlike
most other tutoring centers, we help bridge
the academic achievements gap with
creative rehabilitative services. We offer
individualized, one on one supplemental
special instruction by trained tutors. Our
unique integrated services include art
therapy, which helps build alternative
learning venues, creative skills and stress
management. Dr. Bills Learning Centers
nutrition counseling helps educate families
to connect a healthy and balanced diet to
better brain development. Our mentoring
service complements the academic
assistance to uplift and empower our
students. All our efforts focus on mastering
fundamental skills that will strengthen your
childs self-condence, organization and
cognitive skills for life. Our strategy is to let
the right tutor get it right for your child!
We look forward to answering your
questions, serving your special students, or
just providing encouragement to make this
new school year a great one. Your children
deserve a happy and productive future. Dont
give up! If you dont call us, then please call
someone now for help, before its too late!
Best wishes from Dr. Bill and staff.

EDUCATION & ENRICHMENT GUIDE
At Tallgrass, students decide for themselves how to spend their days. Our
philosophy, which includes democratic governance and age mixing (5-19),
is supported by research and built on trust, freedom, and responsibility.
We use a student-centered, organic approach to learning. On a typical
day, students might be engaged in sewing, learning Japanese, reading,
roller skating, going for walks, cooking, or just hanging out together. In a
setting in which students are free to make their own choices, they become
independent, trustworthy, and responsible.

Heres what Tallgrass students and parents have to say about the school:
You dont have to eat at only one time. You can talk to your friends
whenever you want. Student, age 6
You are challenged to think for yourself and you are challenged
with the charge of responsibility for your own choices.
Tallgrass graduate
Our daughter has learned how to manage conict in a healthy and
independent way. What most children passively learn in school,
my daughter has learned at Tallgrass as by products of her active
participation in life. Tallgrass parent
We like that our daughter [age 6] is able to work on projects/goals
at her own pace, and is truly proud of herself when she completes
them. We like that she is seen as an equal to the adult staff and is
able to engage in conversation with them.

athnasium gets results in math
eduction by utilizing time-tested
approaches to build each students
math understanding and skills. Worldwide,
Mathnasium has helped tens of thousands
of children grow not only to understand
math, but to love it.
The Mathnasium Method was created
by Larry Martinek, an experienced public
and private school teacher for over 35 years.
Larry found that when it came to math
education, there was a vast disconnect
between students learning skills and the
curriculum they were expected to master. He
realized that the only way to give students
the strong mathematical foundation they
needed, was to identify the students current
skill levels and propel them forward by
teaching them math in a way that made
sense to them.
Assembling a blend of methods and
materials that had proven highly effective
for students of all ages, Larry developed
the Mathnasium Method. Instead of relying
on memorization and repetition, Larrys
approach focused on helping children
build deep mathematical understanding
through a combination of mental, visual,
verbal, tactile, and written exercises. His
classroom experience showed that teaching
children conceptually worked much better
than standard repetition and allowed
students to develop Number Sense a
critical foundation for understanding math.
The approach was groundbreaking.
At the Mathnasium of Oak Park/ River
Forest, we work with students from rst
grade through high school. Beginning
with a comprehensive written and oral
assessment of your childs math skills, we
go on to construct a Customized Learning
Plan that targets skill gaps and develops
Number Sense. Students then receive
personalized instruction that caters to their
individual needs, combining techniques
that work with all different learning styles
written, mental, verbal, visual, and tactile.
All the work within your childs learning
plan takes place under the direct
supervision of highly trained Mathnasium
instructors in the center. In addition to the
learning plan, Mathnasium students also
receive homework help to solidify their
understanding of concepts that are being
covered in their current classwork.
Mathnasium of Oak Park/River Forest is
located at 212 S. Marion St. in Oak Park.

your child excel and soar in math, call

T
he purpose of early childhood
education is to foster childrens
cognitive, social, emotional,
physical and language development to
prepare them to be successful learners,
regardless of their nancial and social
status. Children are innately born with the
ability to learn, and throughout their rst
ve years of life they need lots of love,
nurturing and guidance.
To cultivate childrens development,
quality-based early childhood education
settings are age, socially and culturally
appropriate. In this type of environment,
the children experience increased
levels of language development, social
and emotional competence and higher
academic performance. Quality-based
early childhood programs do not primarily
focus on teaching academics but on using
developmentally appropriate practices by
strategically planning activities to meet the
individual needs and skills of every child
and allowing children to develop at their
own pace.
Because play is a signicant part of a
childs development, the curriculum also
supports a play-based philosophy. Through
play, children actively learn and build
relationships with their peers, and they
are developing listening, language and
cooperative skills, which are important
for success in school and later in life.
Teachers also play a major role in the
quality of a childs early childhood
experience. Because children need lots of
emotional support, the teacher strives to
provide a warm, nurturing and supportive
classroom environment. Quality-based
early childhood programs also support
the idea that parents/guardians are their
childs rst teacher, and they usually
provide multiple opportunities for families
to be actively involved in their childs
education.
Choosing a childcare or preschool can
be a daunting task. Keeping the following
quality indicators in mind: nurturing,
educational, age-appropriate, and family-
oriented: ABC Toon Town ts these
descriptors nicely, and we look forward to
serving you.

I
t has been 50 years since the
referendum was passed to create
a community college district that
would come to be known as Triton
College. Beginning as an idea by three
superintendents from area high schools,
Triton College was created to serve as an
opportunity for individuals to enrich their
lives through affordable, accessible higher
education a task the institution has
proudly provided for the past 50 years.
With students education in mind, Triton
College has continued to advance and
evolve to reect the changing times and to
better serve its students: The institution
is constantly updating and restructuring
its academic programs, implementing
new initiatives, renovating its facilities to
be conducive to students education and
bringing in faculty and administration who
are dedicated to helping students achieve
their goals.
This commitment to student success has
contributed to the River Grove institution
graduating approximately 45,000 students
with a degree or certicate since Tritons
rst graduating class in 1967.
As the college prepares to celebrate its
50th anniversary, kicking off with a cake-
cutting ceremony on Aug. 28, the Triton
College community invites community
members to be engaged and inspired by
Tritons humble beginnings and take part in
the yearlong celebration that looks forward
to providing yet another 50 years of student
success.

T
he Learning League was founded on the
principle that all students can achieve
their highest potential when they are
challenged, given the tools to solve problems
and the space to think creatively. We help
students become independent thinkers and
lifelong learners.
Learning League believes that every child
should be challenged, receive enrichment
activities and build strong problem solving
strategies. We believe working one on one
with students is fundamental to this process
and that all students can succeed when
effort and hard work are combined with
the guidance of a positive and motivated
instructor. We train qualied and responsible
high school students to become coaches
and, by doing so, The Learning League offers
an affordable education program that builds
on skills and supports higher order thinking.
This is how it works: your family initially
meets with Sandra Arguello, the Learning
League founder and certied master teacher,
to discuss the needs of your child. With this
information, we will customize a personal
program for your child, including any specic
goals or focuses you may have. The tutor
then uses the created lesson plan to guide
their teaching, adding their personal touches
to make learning fun and meaningful.
If your child is not being challenged in
school or needs a little boost to get ahead
or catch up, let The Learning Leagues
personal and unique approach to learning
keep your child motivated and inspired to
learn all year long.

I
f you were to look down at your nancial
life from 5,000 feet, what would you
see? Spread out before you would be
everything in your life with a dollar sign in
front of itall that you own, all that you
owe, all of your income and your savings,
everything youve spent, and everything
you intend to spend in the future. What
would it look like? Would it be an orderly
landscape, carefully planned and organized?
Would your goals be clearly visible with
well dened pathways leading to them? Or
would it be something more haphazard, like
a garden without a gardener, assembled
in ts and starts with some areas in good
shape and others in neglect?
For Chris Everett, owner of Everett Wealth
Solutions, taking her clients on the 5,000
foot trip above their life is the rst step
in a four step process of helping them
take control of their personal nances.
Chris points out that careful listening and
close examination of the data can often
lead to hidden opportunities in the form
of unnecessary expenses. Such expenses
can add up and be major obstacles in the
way of achieving important life goals, such
as retirement and college. And free to
our clients in The Living Balance Sheet
(LBS), an online wealth organization
platform that can provide a wide-angle view
of their nances. Then, with our guidance,
they can make improved decisions to help
achieve the best possible results. Clients
love it because all their information is
automatically updated dailyfrom their
mortgage and credit card balances to their
401k and any other investment they have.
The second step in Everetts process is
helping clients understand their nancial
choices. No choice is perfect, Chris says,
You need to know what all your options
are and understand how each solution
functions. What the benets are as well
as the risks. No one should ever buy a
nancial product that they dont thoroughly
understand.
The third step is making the plan. This
is the part where we really have to work
together, Chris asserts, We spend a lot of
time with our families to help them make
good nancial choices. Ultimately these
are their choices and they have to feel
comfortable with them. Chris stresses that
this is not a process that can be rushed.
It requires careful deliberation and always
with an eye to the clients nancial goals.
For some people the process can end at
step three. They can pay a fee and receive
their nancial plan which they can then
implement on their own. Alternatively they
can move on to step four and let Everett
Wealth Solutions implement the plan for
them. Personal wealth solutions can be
complicated and for many people, life and
family often distract their attention away
from the regular management of their
nancial plan. The implementation team
at Everett Wealth Solutions can stay on
top of your plan and keep you aware of its
progress.

Keystone Montessori, a school that has
gained the reputation as one of the
countrys premier Montessori schools. The
beauty of Montessori education is that it
takes into consideration the whole child,
says Vicki Shea, Keystones administrative
coordinator. The physical, emotional and
spiritual aspects of children are nurtured
as well as their academic development and
each child is respected as an individual with
unique abilities.
If youre wondering what Montessori education
is all about, its based on the teachings of Maria
Montessori, Italys rst woman doctor who went
on to become a renowned educator. From her
observa tions of the natural development of chil-
dren, she believed that a childs indepen dence,
self-esteem and love of learning could ourish,
given the right environment and with guidance
from a properly trained teacher. Today, 100
years later, there are Montessori schools all
over the world.
Keystone has a class for two-year olds,
primary classes for 3-6 year olds, junior
elementary classes for 6-9 year olds, senior
elementary classes for 9-12 year olds and a
middle school. There are parent/infant classes
also. One of the hall marks of Montessori
education is group ing together children of
different ages. In this way children learn from
each other, says Shea. It also helps the older
children learn a sense of responsibility toward
the younger ones. Children learn by work-
ing with specially designed materials in an
age-appropriate environment which stimulates
the senses and encourages exploration. The
children are busy, each one involved in doing
something either individually or in small
groups. In one of the primary classrooms a
three-year old is mopping the oor, and a
ve-year old is counting with a bead chain.
In the junior elementary classroom a student
is researching snakes and in another part of
the room, a group of students is analyzing
the grammatical parts of a sentence with the
teacher. Many of Montessoris obser vations
about how children learn have been borne out
by recent research show ing that children have
windows in their development when they can
best absorb things like language, music and
math, explains Shea. The school is proud of
its consistently high academic achievement but
places great emphasis on helping children
become well-rounded, respon sible members
of society.
Keystone Montessori is holding an Open

teach their children about God for over
100 years. Currently the church operates a
preschool for 3 to 5 year old children of the
community.
Christ Lutheran Learning Center offers a
mixed-age class that meets 5 mornings per
week. Parents may choose how many days
each week they wish to have their child at-
tend. The class meets from 8:45 until 11:30
am.
The teacher has over 20 years experience
at this preschool. Her main goal is to share
Gods love with the children. There is also an
assistant in the class.
Activities and the classroom environment are
planned to help the children to develop social
skills and to experience hands-on activities in
math, science, reading and writing at the ap-
propriate level for each child. Children learn
songs and listen to books. There is also time
for large muscle development each day. Dur-
ing the year there are eld trips that expand
the childrens knowledge. Some are in the
neighborhood. Others take us farther away:
there is a trip to a farm in the fall and a train

us on these trips
We strive to help the children grow spiritually,
socially, physically and in their desire to learn
in all areas. We plan for an easy transition
into Kindergarten for the children, who will

y name is Alice Green and I enrolled
in the Joseph Business School
because I felt it was time for me to
take my business to the next level. They
teach you how to do business Gods way
and as a Christian in business, I needed
those biblical principles to be successful
and maintain success. Since Ive started
their program, this is the rst year in all of
my 15 years of being in business where I
am able to really excel in my business. By
using the marketing techniques that the
Joseph Business School taught me, my
business has increased and in this past
year I have doubled what I have done in the
years prior.
My name is Jacqueline Frazier and I
enrolled in the Joseph Business School
because I needed a comprehensive
business plan to submit to a banker or
potential investor. I needed a program
that afforded me the opportunity to build
a business plan at an affordable price and
in a shorter period of time than the four to
six years at a traditional business school.
It was accelerated and well worth it. I
would denitely tell anyone that they will
not nd another program that I believe will
provide them with the necessary tools to
walk away with a comprehensive business
plan at such an accelerated pace in the
rest of the country.

R
ecently I had the privilege to create
a short documentary video for
Intercultural Montessori Language
School, titled Citizens of the World.
Throughout several planning visits and
three days to videotape, I was able to
witness in full a dynamic atmosphere and
approach to teaching that any parent should
regard as afrmation of Intercultural as a
truly extraordinary and inspiring place for
education. Beyond the practical real world
(and worldly) rewards gained through a dual-
language experience, what is also nurtured
at Intercultural is a genuine love for learning.
From the moment they are dropped off by
parents and greeted by teachers, the students
sense of purpose is palpable. They are open-
minded and focused. They demonstrate
initiative. Within minutes, there is evidence of
the target language serving as a tool to explore
an entire curriculum: geography, history,
science, mathematics, botany, zoology, and
the arts. The foundations established at the
primary level are built upon at the elementary
level, where the ability to speak, read, and
write in two languages truly blossoms.
More important, it is clear Intercultural
students develop respect for themselves and
others. They exude condence and caring.
They engage in activities with a big picture
mindset: a multicultural world to which we
are all personally connected and responsible.
From life practices to academic studies, there
is a ow, an awareness, and an appreciation
for the relationships between people,
places, things, and even ideas. There is also
balance. Balance between independence and
interaction with others. Between personal
goals and global considerations. Between
self-discovery and structured guidance. The
fact is, teachers move uidly and intuitively
throughout the classroom to steer each
student with the precise amount of direction
and guidance needed, and to maintain the
expected order, behavior, and etiquette. In
one moment, teachers are peers and partners
to the students. In another, they are shepherds
and stewards. During circle time, when the
class gathers to read stories and sing songs,
the teachers command the attention of the
entire group. Academic materials are explored
in depth and detail. We owe Intercultural
teachers thanks and gratitude for developing
our children into better students, and even
better people. They are truly dedicated and
obviously love what they do.

WEST COOK YMCA: INSPIRING
FUTURE LEADERS
Tri, Tri Again: Dont miss the 3rd Annual
Pleasant District Family Triathlon
I
f at rst you succeed, then try a tri
again.
Last year, that was the approach of
Pleasant District Family Triathlon organizers
as they saw participation signicantly
expand from the 2012 inaugural effort.
Now PDFTri leaders are building on the
positive momentum generated in the events
rst two years as they gear up for the next
one on the last full day of summer: Sunday,
Sept. 21st.
By closing off several streets in the
Pleasant District, the race provides a
scaled-down, stress-free and family-friendly
version of the triathlon, one of the most
grueling of athletic endeavors.
One of the events most ardent supporters
is Ruben Figueres, who has competed in
more than 200 triathlons across the world
and has represented Spain and the United
States in ve world triathlon championships.
He participated in last years PDFTri and
plans to do so again this year.
Hands down, this is the best kids race
of the year, Figueres says. The unique
team format allows the kids to race next to
their parents and gives it a more relaxed
atmosphere. I wouldnt be surprised to
see this format become more and more
popular.
The distance is 100 yards of swimming,
4.2 kilometers of bicycling and a one-
kilometer run for those in the 7- to 10-year-
old age group (plus accompanying adults),
and double the distance (200 yards/8.4
kilometers of bicycling and a 2K run)
for 11- to 15-year-olds and adults who
accompany them.
Customarily, the endurance event
incorporates swimming, biking and running
over a combined span of 15-plus miles
(sprint distance) to 140.6 miles (ultra
distance, including a 26.2-mile marathon).
But the PDFTri comes with a decidedly
laidback tone that caters to even the most
timid of would-be weekend warriors.
At the same time, physical tness zealots
have been drawn to the event, which calls
for an adult (16 years or older) and a child
(7 to 15 years old) to participate side-by-
side in the pool at the West Cook YMCA,
255 S. Marion St. before hopping on their
bikes and then wrapping up with a run.
The bike portion of the event is on a
closed course on streets throughout the
Pleasant District (Randolph Street, Maple
Avenue, South Boulevard and Home
Avenue) and the run portion is along Marion
Street.
Adult teammates are often parents and
siblings, but can also be grandparents,
baby-sitters, coaches or any other adult who
signs up with the youngster.
For each age group, the top girl, boy and
adult will receive prizes from Pleasant
District shops and restaurants.
This is the only family triathlon of its kind
in the entire region, and we dont know of
any other event quite like this anywhere else
in the United States, says Sarah Gulseth,
Pleasant District Association president
and the West Cook YMCAs marketing &
communications coordinator. This is a
great way to promote tness for the entire
family, to bring together the community
and to showcase the beauty of the Pleasant
District.
The PDFTri ushers in Pleasant Week
To Be a Kid, a series of events organized
by the Pleasant District Association that
celebrates children and families. The
week wraps up Sunday, Sept. 28th with
Childrens Day at Pleasant Home, 217
Home Ave.

Hotel, the Wednesday Journal / OakPark.
com, Peekaboo Playroom, Visit Oak Park,

All proceeds from the PDFTri benet
the West Cook YMCAs efforts to build a
stronger community.
To register, visit westcookymca.org/pdftri
or sign up at the West Cook YMCA, 255 S.
Marion St. in Oak Park. Registration fees
are $75 per team. Registration closes on
Monday, Sept. 8th, and possibly earlier, as
there are limited spaces available.
