Fix for VPN issues with Rogers Sierra Wireless Network Client and
Cisco VPN Client on Windows 7
Issue: NDIS Driver Conflicts with Windows 7

Symptoms:
It has been observed that Cisco Client VPN solution works fine on the Windows XP machines but not
with the Windows 7 machines.
Potential Cause:
Windows 7 introduced a new adapter type called WWAN. The traffic accepted by the NIC is controlled by an
NDIS Miniport Driver. The WWAN type bypasses NDIS IM drivers (Network Driver Interface Specification
Intermediate driver), so the Client NDIS IM driver fails to receive packets that go in and out WWAN devices.

Solutions:

1. Use the WWAN card as a dial up connection. The Dial Up Connection works and
the USB WWAN card works because in these cases the card is used as a Modem
(thereby bypassing the limitation of NDIS drivers) to connect to the internet. But
the dial up connection has the disadvantage of being very slow connection.

2. Install Citrixs latest DNE (Deterministic Network Enhancer). DNE is an NDIS
intermediate driver. Citrix has released an updated DNE that is compatible with
the Windows 7 Mobile Broadband driver model WWAN adapter. Installing this
update resolves the compatibility issues seen with the Cisco VPN Client.

i. Using regedit.exe (please take a backup of the registry first), look at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHI NE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\MaxNumFilters.
ii. If the value is 8, please set it to 14 (In many of the cases, a registry value that determines
the number of drivers that can capture packets is too low)
iii. Reboot computer
iv. Install the Citrix DNE updater software (dneupdate64.msi)
ftp://files.citrix.com/dneupdate.msi.
v. Reboot computer

Having Issue with installation?
Download the Winfix file from the Citrix website at ftp://files.citrix.com/winfix.exe. This file will clean out existing DNE
settings and ensure the system is ready for a reinstallation.
Double-click "Winfix.exe" and click "Start Windows Fixup."
Download the latest version of DNE from the Citrix website at ftp://files.citrix.com/dneupdate.msi.
Double-click the "dneupdate" file to open the DNE installer.
Review the license agreement and place a check mark in the "I accept the terms in the License Agreement" box.
Click "Install" to install DNE. You will need to restart your system when the installation wizard reports that it has
completed.

Issues after DNE installation:

Unable to connect Remote Desktop Connection:
After the Citrix DNE lightweight driver installation, you might face the issue of not being able to
perform RDP (remote desktop) either through Windows 7 or VNC client. While trying to access
RDP you will see below error messages on connection:

Error while using Windows7 Remote desktop utility

Error while connecting through VNC client

Solution:

1. Click Start > Run; type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
(NOTE: This file is located at C:\Windows\System32\gpedit.msc.)
2. If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

3. You can now set and manage the Local Group Policies on your computer to how
you want them.

Make changes in the following Group policy:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote
Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Connection Client > Configure server
authentication for client.

"enabled" this and choose "always connect even when authentication fails".

Press Apply and OK. No need to restart the computer.
In case, if you still encountered the above messages, just press ok.
