PAPER 1
(THEORY)
(Three hours)
(Candidates are allowed additional 15 minutes for only reading the paper.
They must _OT start writing during this time.)

Answer all questions in Part I and six questions from Part II, choosing two
questions
from each of the Sections A, B and C.
All working, including rough work, should be done on the same sheet as, and
adjacent to,
the rest of the answer.
The intended marks for questions or parts of questions are given in brackets [
].
(Material to be supplied: Log tables including Trigonometric functions)
A list of useful physical constants is given at the end of this paper.

PART I (20 Marks)
Answer all questions.
Choose the correct alternative (a), (b), (c) or (d) for each of the questions given

Q (i):The Magnetic field due to a small magnetic dipole of moment

Q (iv): In Potentiometer experiment , the balancing with a cell is at
length 240 cm . on shunting the cell with resistance 2 ,balancing

Q (v):A radioisotope has a life of 5 years .The fraction of the atoms
of this material that would decay in 15 years will be

B. Answer all questions given below briefly and to the point
Q (i):On what factor does the Photoelectric threshold frequency of a metal
depend?
(ii): 2 waves of the same amplitude reach at a point with a phase difference of
180.What will be the resultant amplitude at that point?
(iii): What is meant by plane of vibration & plane of polarisation?
(iv): A point charge +Q is kept at a point .What work will be done in taking a
unit positive charge along the circumference of a circle of radius r with the
charge +Q at its centre?Give Reason.
(v)If 1% of a radioactive material decays in 5 days ,then find out the amount of
the original material left after 20 days?
(vi) In an ac circuit current i=2 sint amp & Voltage V=5 cos t volt is
applied.Calculate the power dissipated in the circuit.
(vii)Which gates are known as Universal gates?Why?
(viii)what is meant by specific charge on an electron?
(ix) Why is inductance more appropriate than a resistance to decrease
alternating current?
(x)A voltmeter has a resistance of G ohms and a range of i amps. Calculate the
value of the resistance to be used in parallel to convert it into a ammeter of
range ni amp.
(xi) state the necessary condition for the bright interference fringes.
(xii) show that if a free electron moves at right angle to a magnetic field the
path is a circle.
(xiii) A solenoid of 2000 turns and the area of cross-section 1.6x10^-4 m2
carries a current of 4 ampere.Calculate the magnetic moment associated with
the solenoid.
(xiv) In which case a converging lens behaves as a diverging lens?
(xv) sensitivity of a moving coil galvanometer depends on which factors?
PART II (50 Marks)
Answer six questions in this part, choosing two questions
from each of the Sections A, B and C.
SECTIO' A
Answer any two questions:

Question 3:
(a). Obtain the relation : r1/r2=r3/r4 for a wheatstone bridge.( 3)
(b): Draw a circuit diagram for the determination of the internal resistance
of a cell using a potentiometer. (4)
(c): The resistance of a galvanometer is 50 .It is converted into:
(i) a voltmeter using a 10 k resistor.
(ii) an ammeter using a 10 m resistor.
Calculate the resistance of the voltmeter and the ammeter to an accuracy of 3
significant figures.
Question 4:

(a) Using Amperes Circuital Law and with the help of a labelled
diagram, show that magnetic flux density B at a distance r from a
long straight conductor is given by:
B =oI/2r. 3 marks
(b) Obtain the relation for the current I=I0 sin (wt-/2) for a pure
inductor across which an a.c of emf E=E0 sin wt is applied. 3

(c)with the help of appropriate diagram derive the relation e=Blv. For
the motional emf produced in a wire of length l, moving with a velocity
v, perpendicular to a unform magnetic field. 3 marks

Question 5:
(a) Light of wavelength 600 nm falls normally on a slit of width 1.2 nm
producing fraunhoffer diffraction pattern on a screen . calculate the
angular position of the first minimum and angular width of the central
maximum. (3)
(b) Using Huygens principle of light prove the law of refraction of light.(4)
(c) Draw a neat labelled diagram to explain michelsons method to find the
velocity of light in air.
Question 6:
(a) What is meant by diffraction of light? What is an optical grating? State its use
(3)
(b) A ray of light, LM, incident normally on one face AB of a prism ABC having
refracting
angle A = 50 grazes the adjacent face AC (See Figure 6 below). What is the
refractiveindex of its material?

(c)Radii of curvature of two sides of a convex lens of glass (=3/2) are 15 cm &
20 cm. Respectively . Calculate the focal length of this lens. 3
Question 7:
(a) Draw a labelled diagram for the production of pure spectrum. 4
(b) A fish is located at a distance of 10 cm from the wall of fish pond . The
thickness of the glass wall is 2 cm.Find the apparent position of the fish.
3 marks
(c) The refractive indices of a material for red,violet and yellow colour lights
are 1.42,1.62 and 1.59 respectively.Calculate the dispersive power of the
material.If the mean deviation is 40,what will be the angular dispersion
produced by the prism of this material? 3 marks

Question 8:
(a) An electron is passed through a potential difference of 400 V. [3]
(i) Calculate the speed acquired by the electron.
(ii) If it enters a transverse and uniform magnetic field, what is the nature of the
path described by the electron?
(b) (i) Explain the statement: Work function of a certain metal is 2.0 eV. [3]
(ii) Calculate the maximum wavelength of electro-magnetic radiation which will
cause photo emission from this metal.
(d) What is de Broglie hypothesis? What conclusion can be drawn from
Davisson an Germers experiment?[2]

Question 9:
(a) What is meant by mass defect of a nucleus? How is it related to its binding
energy? [2]
(b) Starting with the Law of Radioactive Disintegration, show that:
N = Noe^-(lamda)t , where the terms have their usual meaning.[3]
(c) Calculate the energy released in the following nuclear reaction:
