FIRST SEMESTER 2012-2013
CE C381 DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES
COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION (CLOSE BOOK)
Duration: 3 Hours Max Marks: 90

Q1. Answer the following questions in brief.
(a) Differentiate between web crippling and web buckling.
(b) Define the term Column splice and why we need column splicing.
(c) What do you understand by lug angle, and it is used.
(d) Define Prying force effect and in what circumstances it becomes necessary to consider this effect.
(e) Differentiate between the black bolts and the HSFG bolts
(f) What do you understand by Cleat angle and in what circumstances it is provided and why.
(g) Differentiate between the behavior of un-stiffened and stiffened seat connections.
(h) What do you understand by joint efficiency and how it can be increased
(i) Define the terms intermittent weld and slot weld, in what circumstances these are provided.
(j) Differentiate between the behavior of steel girder in the buildings and in the gantry girder.

Q2. Determine the uniformly distributed collapse load w for the fixed beam shown in Fig. 1.
[5]

Q3. Two Fe410 plates of 10 mm thickness are connected by double covered butt joint using the M20 black
bolts of grade 4.6 as shown in Fig. 2. The thickness of each cover plate is 6 mm. Assume one shear plane
passing through threads. Area of bolt at thread root is 245 mm
2

(i) Find the strength of the bolt and the maximum force F based on bolt strength.
(ii) Find the maximum force F, which can be applied on plates based on main plate strength.
(ii) Find the maximum force F, which can be applied on plates based on Cover plate strength.

Q4. The details of a welded plate girder are as follows:
Width of flange = 550 mm; thickness of flange = 40 mm
Total depth of girder = 1680 mm; thickness of the web = 12 mm
Determine the maximum concentrated load that may be applied over the web of the girder
(i) If there is no stiffener,
(ii) If a pair of bearing stiffeners of 160 mm8 mm (one on each side of web) are welded to web
[12]
Q5. A strut has been made using the two angles ISA 80508. Determine the compressive load carrying
capacity of the strut if,
(i) angles are connected to back to back opposite sides of 10 mm thick gusset plate, as shown in Fig. 3(a)
(ii) angle are place back to back on the same side of 10 mm thick gusset plate as shown in Fig.3(b)
[12]

Q6. A simply supported beam of effective span 10 m is carrying a total factored uniformly distributed load
(including self weight) of 60 kN/m. Due to depth constrained, ISMB450 is to be used for the beam.
Assuming that beam is laterally restrained, check the beam in flexure, if it is not adequate determine the
thickness of the 150 mm wide plates to be welded on both the flanges of the ISMB 450 at mid-span. Also,
determine the width of the end support required to support the beam safely. Assume f
y
= 250 Mpa.
[12]

Q7. A 10 mm thick bracket plate is connected to a flange of a column ISHB225 using the M20 grade bolts of
4.6 grade as shown in Fig. 4. Determine the maximum inclined load P that can be applied safely. Take the
strength of M20 bolt as 46.5 kN.

[12]

Q8. Discuss the design aspects of the welded connection between the web of the beam and to the flange of
the column using the two angles (one on each side of web of beam)
