BIONIC EYE(Attempts to restore Vision)

Belonging to the community of inventors, there is no barrier that we cannot

conquer.
If scientists give birth to ideas, then it is we inventors who put life in those
ideas.
Today we have every tool in our hand. We certainly know magic route to
reach our goal i.e. Science and Technology. This is creating in the eld of
medicine too.
There is no replacement for human sight . It is simply
incomparable because of its capacity to see. !ur life is full of pictures we
daily see. "ife without sight is dark.
#ow are we able to see$$$
%or vision to occur, an image must be formed on retina to stimulate its
receptors&rods and cones'. (esulting nerve impulses must be conducted to
visual areas of cerebral corte) for interpretation. But for the one who are not
blessed with the vision, restoration of the sight for the blind is no more a
dream today. Bionic eyes have made this true. There is a hope for the blind
in the form of bionic eyes.
* Bionic Eye is an e)perimental visual device which is intended to store
vision in those su+ering from partial or total blindness.
The Bionic Eye System
,aking a bionic eye is an e)tremely comple) task .The process that makes
the blind navigate the world starts with a pair of sun glasses, which holds a
tiny video camera mounted in the bridge above the nose. The camera
captures an image and send it to the -isual .rocessing /nit&-./' hanging on
the patient0s belt.
* Bionic 1ye has2
* digital camera which is built into a pair of glasses, captures images and
then sends it to microchip. It also has a battery pack housed with the video
processing unit. When the camera captures an image33 of say, an apple33 the
image is in the form of light and dark pi)els. It sends this image to the video
processor, which converts the apple3shaped pattern of pi)els into a series of
electrical pulses.
The processor sends these pulses to a radio transmitter on the glasses,
which then transmits the pulses in radio form to a receiver implanted under
the eye. The pulses are then sent to retinal implant.
When the pulses reach the retinal implant, they e)cite the electrode array.
The electrodes are stimulated in accordance with the encoded pattern of
light and dark that represents the ob4ect. The electric signals generated by
the stimulated electrodes then travel as neural signals to the visual center of
the brain by way of normal pathways used by healthy eyes 33 the optic
nerves.
The brain, in turn, interprets these signals as an apple and tells the sub4ect.

It takes some training for sub4ects to actually see an ob4ect. *t rst, they see
mostly light and dark spots. But, after a while, they learn to interpret what
the brain is showing them, and they eventually perceive that pattern of light
and dark as an apple.
This technology can add life to their visionless eyes6
Though there are a number of challenges to be faced before this technology
reach them, it has however made T#1 7(1*,........8!,1 T(/1........
