11
4.3 Signum 6 inputs

In this chapter the inputs of the Signum 6 are discussed.

4.3.1 Input contacts

The Signum 6 has 6 inputs. A contact is connected to an input on the back and the input common. One
connection of the contact can be connected to the negative pole of the power supply. The resistance between
the input common and the negative pole of the place where the contact is connected may not exceed 50
ohms. An input situation has to be stable for 50 msecs.

4.3.2 Input contacts, safety

This chapter contains important information for the connection of inputs. Not connecting the
inputs properly can lead to serious injury or equipment damage.

For a safe working situation it is advisable to configure a contact as Normally Closed. When a connection to
the contact is broken, an alarm will still be generated.

12

4.3.3 Lock inputs

With LOCK inputs it is possible to suppress certain input channels. This means when a LOCK input is active
an active input will not cause an alarm

4.3.4 Lock inputs connecting

This chapter contains important information for the connection of the LOCK inputs. Not
connecting the inputs properly can lead to serious injury or damage to the Signum 6.

One of the sides of the contact is connected to LOCK 1 and /or LOCK 2 the other side to INPUT
COMM or the negative pole of the power supply. The resistance between the input common and the
negative pole of the place where the contact is connected may not exceed 50 ohms. An input situation has to
be stable for 50 msecs.

4.3.5 Lock inputs safety

For acquiring a safe working condition it is advisable to configure the LOCK inputs as Normally Open. This
means when contacts are closed alarm situations are blocked. When a wire is broken or not connected alarm
situations are not blocked.

13
4.3.6 Group inputs, use of

The GROUP INPUT can be transferred to one or more outputs. This is done by the wired OR method.

4.3.7 Group inputs connecting

This chapter contains important information for the connection of the LOCK inputs. Not
connecting the inputs properly can lead to serious injury or damage to the Signum 6.

One of the sides of the contact is connected to GROUP INPUT the other side to INPUT COMM or on
the negative pole of the power supply. The resistance between the input common and the negative pole of
the place where the contact is connected may not exceed 50 ohms. An input situation has to be stable for 50
msec.

4.3.8 Group inputs safety

For acquiring a safe working condition the GROUP input is configured as Normally Closed (NC). This
means when contacts as closed alarm situations are blocked. When a wire is broken or not connected alarm
situations are not blocked. This setting cant be changed by the user.

14
4.3.9 Accept Flash, use of

The flashing of the LEDs can be accepted externally by the input ACCEPT FLASH. When a channel is
not accepted it can not come in alarm again. The ACCEPT FLASH input is implemented as a moment
contact.

4.3.10 Accept Flash, connecting

This chapter contains important information for the connection of the ACCEPT FLASH
inputs. Not connecting the inputs properly can lead to serious injury or damage to the Signum
6.

One of the sides of the contact is connected to ACCEPT FLASH the other side to INPUT COMM or on
the negative pole of the power supply. The resistance between the input common and the negative pole of
the place where the contact is connected may not exceed 50 ohms.

4.3.11 Accept Horn, use off

With the input ACCEPT HORN an alarm can be accepted externally. This can only be done when flashing
is already accepted. The ACCEPT HORN is implemented as a moment contact

4.3.12 Accept Horn, connecting

This chapter contains important information for the connection of the ACCEPT HORN
inputs. Not connecting the inputs properly can lead to serious injury or damage to the Signum
6.

One of the sides of the contacts is connected to ACCEPT HORN the other side to INPUT COMM or on
the negative pole of the power supply. The resistance between the input common and the negative pole of
the place where the contact is connected may not exceed 50 ohms.

15
4.4 Signum 6 outputs

The Signum 6 has 5 outputs: a Fail, Horn and 3 group outputs. In the following chapters these outputs will be
discussed.

16
4.4.1 Fail NC output

This is a relay output. This contact is closed during normal operation. This contact opens when the Signum 6
has no power or when an internal error occurs. This output is a Level Normally Energized contact.

4.4.2 Fail NC connecting

This chapter contains important information for the connection of the FAIL NC outputs. Not
connecting the inputs properly can lead to serious injury or damage to the Signum 6.

This is a potential free contact this means that both contacts have to be wired and connected. It is allowed to
connect one of the output contacts to the negative pole of the power supply.

Relay specifications:

4.5 Inputs general introduction

The Signum 6 can interpret inputs as Normally Open and Normally Closed. What this means is explained
in the following chapters.

4.5.1 Inputs, Normally Open
When a contact is configured as Normally Open (NO) a channel will be active or come into alarm when the
contact is closed. In following table this is shown:

Contact Status Alarm
Open Passive No Alarm
Closed Active Alarm

How the Signum 6 behaves is shown in the following table

Channel Configuration
Contact Status Alarm
Open LED off LED off
Closed LED on LED blinks

4.5.2 Inputs, Normally Closed
When a contact is configured as Normally Closed (NC) a channel will become active or go into alarm when
this contact is opened. This is shown in the following table

Contact Status Alarm
Open Active Alarm
Closed Passive No Alarm

How the Signum 6 behaves is shown in the following table

Channel configuration
Contact Status Alarm
Open LED on LED blinks
Closed LED off LED off

20

4.5.3 Inputs safety

This chapter contains important information for the configurations of inputs. Not configuring
inputs correctly can lead to serious damage to Signum 6 or material

For acquiring a safe situation it is advised to configure a contact as Normally Closed (NC). When a
connection to a contact is broken an alarm will still be generated because the Signum 6 identifies an open
contact.

21

4.6 Outputs general

The Signum 6 knows 7 types of outputs:
1. Level Normally Energized (Level NE)
2. Level Normally Not Energized (Level NNE)
3. Dip Normally Energized (Dip NE)
4. Dip Normally Not Energized (Dip NNE)
5. Level & Dip Normally Energized (Level & Dip NE)
6. Level & Dip Normally Not Energized (Level & Dip NNE)
7. LED copy
These outputs are either implemented as a relay contact or as open collector.

22

4.6.1 Outputs Level Normally Energized

NE stands for Normally Energized. In this case the output signal is pulled to the output common (energized)
in case the output is passive (inactive). When the output becomes active the output signal is no longer pulled
to the output common. See picture below.

In this diagram passive means that an output is not set (not activated) and active that an output is logically set
(activated).
Output Open
Output Closed
Passive Active

23
4.6.2 Outputs Normally Not Energized

NNE stands for Normally Not Energized. In this case the output signal is not pulled to the output common in
case the output is passive (inactive). When the output becomes active the output signal is pulled to the output
common. See picture below.

In this diagram passive means that an output is not set (not activated) and active that an output is logically set
(activated)

Passive Active

24
4.6.3 Output Dip Normally Energized

In this case the output signal is pulled to the output common in case the output is passive. When the output
becomes active the output signal will be disconnected from the output common for 500 mSec. See picture
below.

Output Open
Output Closed
Passive Active Passive
Output Closed

25
4.6.4 Output Dip Normally Not Energized

In this case the output signal is not pulled to the output common in case the output is passive. When the
output becomes active the output signal will be pulled to the mass for 500 mSec even is the output still active.
See picture below.

26

4.6.5 Outputs Level & Dip Normally Energized

This option is often used in chained alarm systems. At Level & Dip Normaly Energized (NE) the output is
pulled to the mass in passive status. When a channel becomes active the output will no longer be pulled to
mass. When another channel becomes active the output will be passive for a short time, a dip, and then go
back to the active state. When all the channels have become passive the output will also become passive. The
length of the dip is 500 msec.

Output Level & Dip Normally Energized

27

4.6.6 Output Level & Dip Normally Not Energized

This option is often used in chained alarm systems. At Level & Dip Normaly Not Energized (NNE) the
output is not pulled to the mass in passive status. When a channel becomes active the output will be pulled to
the mass. When another channel becomes active the output will be passive for a short time, a dip, and then go
back to the active state. When all the channels have become passive the output will also become passive. The
length of the dip is 500 msec.

28
4.6.7 Outputs LED copy

By LED copy the output is passive when all inputs are passive. When one or more inputs are active or when
an alarm is accepted the output will become active. When one or more channels come into alarm the output
will follow the blinking of the LEDs. This is depicted in the drawing below

29
4.7 Delay times

Normally the input or output signals is determined directly. Determining the active or passive state can be
delayed for the in- and outputs.

30

4.7.1 Delay in

In case of a delay In there is a delay between activation of a channel and the action assigned to the
activation of the channel, a channel has to be active during the delay time. When a channel becomes passive
before the delay time is passed the time is reset and nothing happens. An action can be a LED that starts to
blink or turns on or off. This is shown in the drawing below. Please note that this applies to an input as well
as an output.

31
4.7.2 Delay out

By Delay Out there is a delay between the deactivation of a channel and the action assigned to the
deactivation of the channel. This is shown in the drawing below. Please note this applies to an input as well as
an output

32
4.8 Outputs safety

This chapter contains important safety information for configuring the outputs. Not configuring
outputs correctly can damage the Signum 6 or materials.

When an output is connected to another (alarm) system it is advisable to configure an output as Normally
Energized (NE) and the input of the other system as a Normally Closed input. When a connection is
disconnected an alarm will still be generated. This is because the following system detects an open contact.

33
5. Operating Signum 6

5.1 Status
When a channel comes into status the relevant LED will turn on. Also the GROUP output which is assigned
to this channel will become active. No action of the user is required. When a contact becomes passive the
LED will turn off.

5.2 Alarm

When a channel comes into alarm the relevant LED will start blinking and the HORN and GROUP outputs
will be active. The blinking will be stopped by pressing ACCEPT FLASH. You can stop HORN by pressing
STOP HORN.

34
6. Configuration Signum 6

This chapter contains important information for configuring the Signum 6. Not configuring the
Signum 6 correctly can lead to serious material or personal injury. For consequences of a bad
configuration VAF CSI Control Systems accepts no liability under any circumstance.

In this chapter the configuration of the Signum 6 is explained step by step. The Signum 6 is delivered with a
standard configuration. To configure the Signum 6 an infrared interface is used in conjunction with a personal
computer. Configuring the Signum 6 by means of buttons is not possible. On the personal computer the
Signum6 program is installed. With the Simcon 6 program you can make the configuration and simulate the
configuration without the need for a Signum 6.

35
6.1 Configuration options off the Signum 6

For the user the following items can be configured according the table below. The factory settings are
indicated with an asterisk. The standard configuration for delay times is 0.

1. Without prejudice to the restrictions stated hereinafter, the contractor guarantees both the soundness of the
product delivered by him and the quality of the material used and/or delivered for it, insofar as this concerns
faults in the product delivered which do not become apparent during inspection or transfer test, which the
principal shall demonstrate to have arisen within 12 months from delivery in accordance with subarticle 1a,
exclusively or predominantly as a direct consequence of unsoundness of the construction used by the
contractor or as a consequence of faulty finishing or the use of poor materials.
1a. The product shall be deemed to have been delivered when it is ready for inspection (if inspection at the
premises of the contractor has been agreed) and otherwise when it is ready for shipment.
2. Articles 1 and 1a shall equally apply to faults which do not become apparent during inspection or transfer
test which are caused exclusively or predominantly by unsound assembly/installation by the contractor. If
assembly/installation is carried out by the contractor, the guarantee period intended in article 1 shall last 12
months from the day on which assembly/installation is completed by the contractor, with the understanding
that in this case the guarantee period shall end not later than 18 months after delivery in accordance with the
terms of subarticle 1a.
3. Defects covered by the guarantee intended under articles 1, 1a and 2 shall be remedied by the contractor by
repair or replacement of the faulty component either on or off the premises of the contractor, or by shipment
of a replacement component, this remaining at the discretion of the contractor. Subarticle 3a shall equally
apply if repair or replacement takes place at the site where the product has been assembled/installed. All costs
accruing above the single obligation described in the first sentence, such as are not restricted to shipment
costs, travelling and accommodation costs or disassembly or assembly costs insofar as they are not covered
by the agreement, shall be paid by the principal.
3a. If repair or replacement takes place at the site where the product has been assembled/installed, the
principal shall ensure, at his own expense and risk, that:
a. the employees of the contractor shall be able to commence their work as soon as they have arrived at the
erection site and continue to do so during normal working hours, and moreover, if the contractor deems it
necessary, outside the normal working hours, with the proviso that the contractor informs the principal of this
in good time;
