The School of Translation and Interpretation and its 'rad$ate St$dent (ssociation "STI'S(% at
University of Ottawa have the pleas$re to anno$nce World Words: The First uOttawa Annual
Graduate Student Conference in Translation Studies, to be held on November 14-15, !14) O$r
p$rpose is to provide emer*in* researchers of vario$s bac+*ro$nds with an opport$nity to share
the res$lts of their wor+ on translation and its power of brin*in* people to*ether)
In its delicate, yet privile*ed position as an interdisciplinary field, translation st$dies has been
loo+ed at thro$*h vario$s lenses for a lon* time, while research has been impacted by a wide
ran*e of theoretical and empirical perspectives, from post-colonialism to sociolo*y, from
anthropolo*y to socio-co*nitive science, etc) -$t the enco$nter between people, comm$nities,
societies, and c$lt$res has been at the core of the field at all times) It is thro$*h comm$nication
that Translation St$dies has always related to other disciplines, positionin* itself in a wide
networ+ of practical and theoretical +nowled*e) In 1..., -r$no /ato$r ar*$ed that the older
$sa*e of network involved a series of transformations "traductions%, b$t that a more recent one
came to e0press e0actly the opposite1that is, transport witho$t deformation) 2ifteen years later,
we endeavor to e0amine more closely how the theory and practice of translation position
themselves in relation to s$ch a comple0 concept)
