PREFACE.
In placing this work before the profession, the author
wishes it to be understood that it is not with any desire to
have such condensed work supersede the study and use of
the more complete Materia Medica ; nor is it on account of
any supposed incorrectness or unreliability of the original
works of Hahnemann, for these, after nearly three-fourths
of a century of daily searching scrutiny, must be accepted
as bearing the imprint of being wrought by a master mind -
almost intuitive perception having guided in the work.
The real object in preparing this work has been to give
in a condensed form, to the student of Homopathy, such
absolutely necessary material as would enable him, in a
comparatively short time, to gain knowledge of such
important leading symptoms and conditions as are
characteristic of each remedy -knowledge which is
imperatively necessary for everyday practice. The large and
more complete works present by their size, if by nought
else, great obstacles to the rapid acquirement of a practical
knowledge of the genius of each remedy. In order to overcome this, efforts have been made in
the past to condense the material of the larger works. Clinical experience only can verify
symptoms obtained through provings ; this we are gaining daily, and profiting thereby. Year by
year we have been enabled, through such experience, to separate wheat from tares. We have now
garnered at least a fair percentage of good wheat -and the harvest season is not yet over.
The material for this work has been culled from the manuscript and other material collected
for a much larger work on verified and important symptoms, viz., "Guiding Symptoms", now in
process of publication, on which many years of careful research have been bestowed.
Not all of our remedies are herein given, inasmuch as this work is intended for a text-book, a
manual, not a complete Materia Medica ; and though it was desirable to condense, it was also
necessary to give the really useful symptoms sufficiently complete to make up the picture of
each remedy so as to be practically useful, thus making it impossible to give more remedies,
without so increasing the bulk as to render the book unsuited to its purpose.
Regarding the arrangement of symptoms, it will be found to correspond to that used in the
"Analytical Therapeutics" ; for full explanation, see introduction to the same.
The symptoms of each remedy are divided into forty-eight chapters -thus,
1 Mind and disposition ; this contains all mental states.
2 Sensorium, embracing over-sensitiveness and irritability of brain and senses ; vertigo ;
dullness, etc.
3 Inner head, pains, etc.
4 Outer head, symptoms of bones, periosteum, skin, and hair ; also motions and positions of
head.
5 Sight and eyes.
6 Hearing and ears.
7 Smell and nose.
8 Face, including expression, etc.
9 Lower jaw, outer mouth, chin, and sub-maxillary glands.
10 Teeth and gums.
11 Taste, speech and tongue.
12 Inner mouth.
13 Palate and throat.
14 Desire for food and drink.
15 Effects of eating and drinking.
16 Gastric symptoms.
17 Epigastric region.
18 Hypochondria.
19 Abdomen.
20 Rectum and anus, including emission of flatus, stools, hemorrhoids.

For convenience and to save space, some of these headings have been shortened throughout
the work.
The Bold text corresponding to the third degree of distinction in Bnninghausen's Repertory,
has here more significance than in the "Guiding Symptoms" ; there it indicates symptoms
verified by cures, here it marks in most instances characteristic symptoms.
The Greek letter (theta), is occasionally used (not as extensively as in the Guiding
Symptoms) before the pathological or physiological state to which the symptom refers.
Every care has been bestowed that this might prove a reliable manual for the use of students,
particularly the profession.
The thanks of the author are due to Dr. C. G. Raue, for his careful and systematic arrangement
of the mind symptoms ; to Drs. Korndrfer and Farrington, for their assistance on the first
edition, and to Drs. Knerr and Mohr, for assistance on the second ; also to those friends who
have kindly sent in corrections and additions.

PREFACE TO THIRD EDITION.
IN the preparation of this, the third edition of HERING'S CONDENSED MATERIA MEDICA,
additions have been made and a few typographical errors corrected, but in justice to the lamented
author, no alterations have been made in the substance of the text as he left it.
More than twenty new remedies, arranged after the plan of the book, are given in full ; and over
forty partially proved drugs, with brief but distinctive indications, are added to the sections on
"Relationship". These latter are arranged and classified in alphabetical order.
Besides all this, about six hundred choice and well-attested symptoms have been incorporated in
their proper places in the text. All the late works have been drawn upon for the new material, and
even private sources have been unsparingly taxed ; but still, great caution has been used in
making selections. The plans and purposes of the book demand clinical as well as pathogenetic
symptoms. But of the former sort only those have been employed which agree with the provings,
and which show every evidence of genuineness. Such discrimination demands the exercise of
one's best judgment, and the expenditure of much time. But it is believed the benefits to be
derived far outweigh the trouble. The book is now offered to the profession and to students, not
as a rival of other works, but as a rich treasury full of information common to Homopathic
literature, and also of gleanings from the vast collection which Dr. Hering made during a busy
half-century of medical study and labor.

Publishers' Preface to Fourth Edition.
The third edition of HERING'S CONDENSED MATERIA MEDICA being exhausted the
question of a fourth edition confronted the publishers. After due consideration it was determined
to let the work of those masters in Homopathy, Hering and Farrington, remain as they left it.
Homopathy is not a shifting changing science. This book is a true exponent of Homopathy,
and while it might be enlarged by the addition of new remedies it could not be improved upon in
its sphere -A CONDENSED MATERIA MEDICA. So the old work is again brought out,
unchanged. It is a book culled by Hering from the manuscript of his ten volume Guiding
Symptoms, and it contains the cream of that large work. As Hering says : "Clinical experience
only can verify symptoms obtained through provings" ; and further : "We have now garnered at
least a fair percentage of good wheat." That "good wheat" is to be found in this volume -a
volume that, perhaps, contains fewer unverified symptoms than any other published ; indeed it
has been said that every symptom in this book has been verified at the bedside. Be that as it may,
the HERING'S CONDENSED MATERIA MEDICA is undoubtedly one of the most helpful
books to the physician ever published.
