MGT 2010 Sem 2, 2011-2012 Group Assignment

1. As a group, you will need to look through the list of movies provided below and select a
movie that all the group members are familiar with OR provide another movie of your
choice. If you choose to select a movie of your choice, double-check with me to see if I
have already watched it.

2. Each group must select different movies i.e. no two groups should select the same movie.

3. Watch your chosen movie and analyse it using the following criteria:

i. What is the main storyline about?
ii. Identify the main characters.
iii. What management style can you identify in the movie i.e. Scientific Management,
Bureaucratic Management, Humanistic etc.?
iv. What ethical dilemmas do you find in the movie? How do you think the main
characters involved handled it? Do you agree with their method?
v. What type of planning was evident in the movie? Did the characters follow the
steps in the planning process?
vi. Were there any important decisions that were being made in the movie? How
were the decisions being made i.e. did they follow the decision making process
model? Explain your answers.
vii. What organisational structures could you identify from the movie i.e. hierarchy or
networking, boundaryless etc.?
viii. Do you think there was one party that wanted to implement a change and were
they being resisted? What change tactic were they using and what resistance to
change tactic was being applied by the opposing party?
ix. What elements of HR issues can you identify in the story?
x. What attitudes can you identify in the main characters?
xi. Where there any perceptual biases that were found in the movie?
xii. What sort of personality types can you identify from the characters in the movie?
xiii. What emotions and moods are portrayed in the movie? Were the emotions easy to
see or did you have to guess from other evidences from the scenes? Explain
your answer.
xiv. How do you think the characters were handling the stress during this time?
xv. Who was/were the leader(s) in the movie? What kind of leadership style did they
have?
xvi. What sort of power tactics or influential tactics could you identify from the
movie?
xvii. What motivational theories were applied in the movie?
xviii. Was there effective and efficient communication occurring among the main
characters?
xix. Was teamwork applied in the movie? If no, why do you say that? If yes, do you
think the team was effective?
xx. Can you identify any elements of control in the movie?

4. You must support your answers with theories that you have found in your textbook or
from any other journal articles, textbooks, website or other sources.

5. Your report should include PROPER REFERENCING to avoid PLAGIARISM. Details
on how to provide correct referencing can be found on the internet, at the library or by
reviewing any Masters thesis available at the Resource Centre or at the library. I
STRONGLY suggest you review these resources first before you begin writing.

6. Research on how to apply correct referencing format is also part of your assignment and
you will be graded accordingly.

7. Your report should include:
a. Introduction
b. Content page
c. Analysis of the Movie (based on the questions listed above)
d. Lessons Learnt from the Movie
e. Islamic Perspective
f. Conclusion
g. Reference Section

8. No presentation is necessary for this assignment.

9. Format for the assignment: Plain A4 white paper (cover sheet will be provided), 1.5 line
spacing, justified alignment, stapled at the top-left corner of the paper.

10. Number of pages: between 20 25 pages (without cover page, content page, references
or appendixes).

You will need to submit one hardcopy and email me (zabeda@iium.edu.my) the complete
softcopy on the same day. Please indicate your course, section, group leaders name, handphone
