PhD position in Nano-physics & technology (semiconductor
nanowire/graphene based structures and devices)
Competitive | Norway | 10 Jul 2013
One PhD position in Nano-physics&technology (semiconductor
nanowire/graphene based structures and devices) at the Department of
Electronics and Telecommunications.
One PhD position is offered at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications
(IET) (http://www.iet.ntnu.no/en) in Faculty of Information Technology,
Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (IME), Norwegian University of Science
and Technology (NTNU).
The position is funded by NTNU.
The nanowire group at IET focuses on growth, characterization and processing of III-V
semiconductor nanowires for use in photonics, solar cell technology and sensor
applications. The III-V nanowires are grown in a molecular beam epitaxy system at the
department (MBE lab). Fabrication of nanowire devices is being explored using the
NTNU NanoLab cleanroom (www.ntnu.no/nanolab/english). Optoelectronic
characterization of individual nanosystems using techniques such as low temperature
photocurrent and electroluminescence (Nanophotonics lab) is done in order to
understand, improve and utilize quantum size effects for future nano-photonic device
applications. In addition, advanced TCAD optoelectronic simulations are performed
within the group. In collaboration with the department of Physics we also do detailed
structural characterization of the nanowires using the microscopes at the TEM Gemini
Center (http://www.ntnu.edu/web/geminicentre/tem).
In this PhD project we are looking for a highly motivated student to explore III-V
semiconductor nanowire/graphene based structures and devices. This is a research
topic that was initiated by our group in 2012 and based on our discovery of epitaxial
growth of semiconductors on graphene. A YouTube video explaining this technology
can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wLOXHRVVwQ. The main
role of this PhD position is to study the fundamental properties of the nanowire/
graphene hybrid structure and to optimize it for optoelectronic applications.
The candidates should hold a masters degree in nanotechnology, physics, physical
electronics or other relevant disciplines. The applicant should supply a motivation
letter indicating their preferred research topic within the NTNU nanowire research
group. We are looking for talented students with the highest marks independent of the
field of choice. For more information please contact: Professor Helge Weman,
helge.weman@iet.ntnu.no, +47 735 94409. http://www.iet.ntnu.no/~weman/
Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for 4 years with 25% of the time spent
on teaching assistance and related assignments. The objective of the grant is to obtain
a PhD degree, hence the successful applicant must be enrolled as a PhD candidate at
NTNU. See also information about PhD education at NTNU at
http://www.ntnu.edu/ime/research/phd
The appointment is at code 1017, salary level 50 the national salary scheme, gross
NOK. 421 100 per annum, of which 2% is deducted for the State Pension scheme.
The application must contain information about education, examinations and previous
experience. Certified copies of testimonies and documents must be attached. NTNUs
PhD rules require a master degree or equivalent, with at least 5 years of studies and
an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best).
Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma
Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade
system and the rights to further studies associated with the obtained degree:
