Corporate Social Responsibility: Case studies

I) Oil India Limited


Since its inception OIL has always given top priority towards the all-round development of
the people residing in and around the Companys area of operation. OIL has embarked
upon massive programs of educational, health and infrastructural development endeavors
to invest technology with a human face.

Social Programs: The company introduced a scheme entitled Social Welfare Program
(SWP) in 1984 and later on another scheme called Areas Development Scheme (ADS) in
1996. The SWP policy places OILs commitment of protecting the environment, upliftment
of education, Health and socio-economic Development a topmost priority. All-round
development of education, rural infrastructure, primary health care, environment
protection, promotion of sports/sportsperson (especially rural sports), assistance to youth
and women organizations in carrying out community development activities are some of
the key areas covered under SWP.
Area Development Scheme (ADS) was introduced in 1996 with the objective of supporting
the various socio-cultural activities in the operational areas. The Scheme covers the
construction of roads, setting up of educational institutions and primary health centers in
the North East Region and other operational areas of the company. OIL has till date
constructed over 100 bridges/ 1400km of roads and provided financial assistance to most
of the educational institutions in and around OILs operational areas in Assam.

Health: The mobile hospital services of OIL have always been one of the most significant
community welfare projects of the Company. In the recently carried out social audit of OILs
community welfare initiatives, the Companys Mobile Hospital services were ranked very
highly by all the respondents. Based on this feedback, the Company decided to increase the
number of visit from the earlier 16 20 visits per month to 40-50 visits per month. The
Company has also signed a MoU with St Lukes Hospital, which will extend the services to
villages in Tinsukia District while the Companys own team would cater to villages in
Dibrugarh District.

Education: As on date, the Company has provided financial assistance towards
construction of school building, libraries, auditoriums, teachers common room etc in over
350 institutions in the Company operational areas in Upper Assam. The Company also
provided Merit Scholarships to students who excel in their 10th and 12th Board exams
from schools in and around OILs operational areas in Upper Assam. In its commitment to
the all-round development of higher education, OIL has sponsored two prestigious Chairs
(KD Malaviya Chair in Geosciences at Dibrugarh University & Sankardeva Chair in
Literature at Guwahati University).

Project Rupantar- The New CSR Iinitiative: In order to address the problem of growing
unemployment and poverty, OIL has undertaken a long-term project named Rupantar
(transformation) of investing in projects, which can help the unemployed youths to find
alternate source of employment. Oil India Limited signed a MoU with the State Institute of
Rural Development (SIRD), Assam on 8th September, 2003. The project aims to create self
employment avenues and promote entrepreneurship in the region and generate
sustainable sources of livelihood. The focus is on development of agro-based industries,
diversification in handloom products with special focus on eri and muga (world famous
golden silk of Assam) poultry farming, pig breeding, duck rearing, fishery, sericulture,
organic farming etc. Till date over 2000 SHGs have already been formed and a large
number of these SHGs have received loans from banks.
Agriculture Development Program: Oil India Rural Development Society (OIRDS) under
the aegis of OIL adopts villages under registered Pathar Parichalona Samity (PPS), provides
assistance and technical guidance to farmers in nearby villages of OILs operational areas
for agricultural development. Extensive in-field training on modern methods of cultivation
both in Kharif & Rabi, farming equipment, high-yielding seeds, organic fertilizers etc. are
introduced and distributed to farmers of the region. Introduced in the year 1991, 31
villages have been adopted under this scheme till date.

Achievements: OILs exemplary achievements in Corporate Social Responsibility have
earned the Company due recognition from prestigious organizations. The World Council
for Corporate Governance (WCFCG) and Centre for Corporate Governance (CFCG) awarded
Oil India with the prestigious Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Social Responsibility in
2002. Oil India Limited (OIL) also bagged the prestigious TERI Corporate Social
Responsibility Award, 2004, which was presented to OIL in recognition of corporate
leadership for good corporate citizenship and sustainable community development
initiatives.

II) Bharat Electronics Limited
The CSR initiatives being pursued by the Company are broadly in the areas: Health Care,
Education, Rural Development, Environment Protection and Conservation of Natural
Resources. During the year 2012-13, an amount of Rs 4.20 crore was spent by the Company
on various CSR programs/ projects. Some of the key programs undertaken during the year
are as below:
(i) Construction of Vocational Training Centre at New Delhi towards rehabilitation of
the Naval Widows.
(ii) Construction of class rooms for Government schools in Bangalore Rural District.
(iii) Providing Ambulance vans and medical equipment to Indian Red Cross Society for
conducting blood donation camps and providing health services in Delhi and rural
areas of Karnataka.
(iv) Providing Aids and Appliances to persons with disabilities in UP and Karnataka states.
(v) Provision of bio-digester based toilets, developed by DRDO, in rural areas of Odisha.
(vi) Promotion of scientific education among school children thro upgradation of Hall of
Electronics in Visvesvaraya Industrial & Technological Museum, Bangalore.
Water Management : There has been consistent reduction of water consumption every
year in the past ten years, which is mainly due to implementation of a number of water
conservation projects. Rainwater harvesting and innovative recharging of bore wells
enable to collect the runoff water and recharge the ground water table. The large-scale
rainwater-harvesting reservoir at Bangalore unit has a capacity of 170 million litres with
expected annual yield of around 234 million litres. Similar rainwater-harvesting reservoirs
are available at other Units also. Roof top harvesting planned during 2012-13, is in
progress which will help in conservation of 5 ML for fresh water.

Solid Waste Management: BEL is also taking care of disposal of Municipal Solid Waste in a
scientific manner. BEL has established a system to segregate waste generated at the source
itself for facilitating scientific disposal of municipal solid waste. Presently such waste is
sent for processing at a well-established solid waste treatment facility in Bangalore.
Concerted efforts are made to reduce, recycle, reuse waste so that paper and plastic can be
recycled and reused rather than sent to landfills. BEL has been participating in recycling of
paper and plastic waste with M/s. ITC Wealth out of Waste scheme (WOW). This has
resulted in saving of trees, energy and water also encouraging agencies in bringing out such
programs to minimize impact on environment.

Control of Air and Water Pollution: Air emissions from process are controlled through
appropriate air pollution control equipment. Due to the nature of chemical used and the
processes adapted in the manufacture of the products, the impact from the pollutants is
insignificant. Waste water generated from production centers are treated to meet reusable
standards and recycled for production purpose again. Likewise domestic effluent generated
in the factory and colony is treated and recycled for horticulture purpose.

Ecological Sustainability: The Company continues its journey towards Ecological
Sustainability. Around 1,35,750 different species of plants are grown in the campus which
has been inhabitant for varieties of birds and other creatures supported by fruits and
flower bearing of these plants. Even open areas are covered with lawns and shrubs. Around
3, 74, 000 Square Meters lawns and 23,000 meters hedges are nurtured in the campus.

OHSAS 18001 (2007): BEL cares for the wellbeing of its workforce as well. Construction
Divisions follow implementation guidelines of OHSAS 18001 (2007) to address the
occupational and safety issues.

Awards: In recognition of its efforts towards environment management and sustainable
development, the Company received the following accolades recently:
1st prize for Excellence in Environment Management by ELCINA-EFY 2011-12.
Excellent Water Efficient Unit Award 2012 and Innovative case study award from
the Confederation of Indian Industry( CII) for 2012 under the National Award for
Excellence in Water Management held at Jaipur
