AMP CAVA
When you visit most wineries you are
bound to the wines just made there,
which is rather the point of visiting a
winery. However AMP Cava have taken
a different approach to its tasting room,
where while it is set in one winery you
can taste wines from outside the winery
walls. The winemaker is Karim Mussi, a
Mendocinean who makes wine under his
own Altocedro label as well as consulting
for various different projects all of which
you can taste at AMP Cava in Maipu.
The possibility of trying wines from
all over Argentina with different terroirs,
different styles and philosophies, with
one winemaker in common is a unique
proposal and an interesting one. Flights
can be arranged by location, variety or
price point and give you the chance to try
most notably an excellent Tempranillo
from La Consulta, rich Bordeaux-style
blends from Maipu, and even wines
from Salta in the North of Argentina. It
is a small but diverse spectrum of wines
to try, but Karims preference for making
wines with good poise and freshness
dominates.
I always look for balanced wines
balance has to the principal virtue, says
Karim. Wine isnt always perfect, but
for me wines have personality from the
process.
Karim is quite a self-made winemaker,
having started his own winery at the age
of 24. While he makes wines all over
Mendoza and Argentina, and appreciates
the different soils and climates on offer,
his enological home is La Consulta in
the Uco Valley, where he first made
his wine and which he believes has a
winemaking richness beyond the vines.
La Consulta is one of the oldest wine
producing regions in Argentina, Karim
comments. It has a lot of history too, it
was the frontier between the Indians and
the Spanish, and it is important for San
Martins crossing.
La Consulta is becoming more
renowned today too, although nowadays
not so much for battle lines but for being
one of the pioneering regions in higher
altitude, cooler plantings in Mendoza.
Karim is one of the forerunners in the
region, but now you can get a taste of La
Consulta and a whole lot more much
closer to the city, in Maipu at AMP Cava.
