Outcomes:
At the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. Identify mechanisms and predict their motion
2. Calculate the degrees of freedom of mechanisms
3. Design mechanisms to fulfill motion generation and quick return
requirements
4. Determine the positions, velocities and accelerations of links and
points on mechanisms
5. Derive SVAJ functions to fulfill cam design specifications
6. Calculate dynamic joint forces of mechanisms
7. Balance simple rotating objects and pin-jointed fourbar linkages
8. Work in a team to analyze and modify existing mechanisms
9. Present completed work in oral and written form
10. Use related computer programs to design, model and analyze
mechanisms

Tutorials &
Quizzes:
Tutorial session will consist of in-class problem solving exercises, plus
sessions for quizzes, which is a mini test (one problem per quiz)

Quizzes: Individual quizzes will be given throughout the semester. The details
will be announce in the class

Mini Project: A class project is a big assignment to be completed throughout the
semester. The project is to be done in groups of 4 or 5. Details will be
discussed in class.

Students
Responsibility:
1. Get the required textbook
2. Read it before coming to lecture
3. Bring along a geometrical set and some tracing paper (during Week
2)
4. Brush up knowledge on manual drawing techniques
5. Sustain interest in course material
6. Attempt all practice problems
7. Experiment with computer programs and mathematical tools
introduced in class
8. Frequent visit to the webspace for lecture slides, problem solutions,
program files, etc.

Attendance/
Punctuality
Policy:
Attendance is compulsory. If you are absent from lectures without any
valid reason for more than 3 times, the Department will exercise the
right to send a query letter to your sponsor and parents/guardians.

Student late for more than 15 minutes of the class will be recorded as
absent, but allowed in class.

Plagiarism
Policy:
Copying someone elses work or facilitating academic dishonesty is
considered an act of plagiarism. Any such act will be heavily penalized.
