CADILLAC AREA YMCA
DILLON COMMUNITY CENTER
2013 ANNUAL REPORT
DEAR CADILLAC COMMUNITY
Our local YMCA continues to make a huge difference in the lives of those living in
the greater Cadillac Community. One such life is that of Seth Houk, a 2012 Cadillac High
student who has found great friendships and wellbeing at the YMCA. Seth has been giving
back by being a camp counselor for the last two years at Camp Torenta. Camp Torenta is a
great summer program that many children attend each year. Many of the adults in our
community have fond memories of their time at Camp Torenta, and this tradition continues
to grow for all children in our area with your generous donations.
Our YMCA provides many services for our community with over $49,000 in fnancial
assistance to 840 different people who were able to participate in the Y and its programs
for 2013 through the generosity of our donors. Donors also provided over 1,000 CWTA
rides for youth from Cadillac Area Schools allowing them to participate in after-school
programming.
Our board is proud of the many collaborations that are a part of the YMCA culture. The
YMCA has teamed up with all four Cadillac Area Elementary schools and Pine River
Elementary to provide an afterschool tutoring program that includes vigorous play,
healthy snack, and nutrition education. They started a community garden during the
summer of 2013 in partnership with the Cadillac Health Coalition and the District Health
Department. They work with local agencies like the United Way, DHS and the Family
Division of the 28th Circuit court system to provide a life skills program to area teens.
When three head start programs were lost in our area in 2013, the YMCA stepped up and
added 18 of these students to its preschool population. These are just a few of the many
ways that our YMCA has worked to better the lives of people within our community.
Additionally, the YMCA makes changing to a healthy lifestyle a positive event to many in
our area. Like other communities, ours has a combined overweight and obesity rate totaling
over 77% of the population. During any visit, you can see all shapes and sizes walking,
using a cardio machine or attending a class to try and combat this national problem. They
do so with encouragement from instructors, personal trainers and fellow members. The
YMCA is a great community resource and we invite anyone who has not visited it to check
out the incredible and life changing programming that occurs within and outside of its
walls.
Sincerely,
Kelly Smith, YMCA Board Chair

CAMP TORENTA
STATS 2013
As parents, we always want to know that our children are
in good hands when they are not with us. Camp Torenta gives
parents the confdence to know that this is true for their children
when they are attending camp. The minute you drive your children
into Camp Torenta, you know it is a special place. The counselors
immediately make you feel like your children will be in good hands.
We have two boys, Brendan & Keegan, that we have been very
fortunate to be able to send them to camp with the help of the YMCA
scholarship program. They have been attending camp Torenta since
2007. Each year, they cannot wait for the fyer to come out so we
can get them signed up for another week or two of camp Torenta.
Camp Torenta is a great experience & a life time of wonderful
memories for Brendan & Keegan.
Camp Torenta Parents
Camp Torenta is a great camp that kids look forward to
attending every summer. And every year the YMCA works
with the Wexford-Missaukee Department of Human Services
(DHS) to help DHS sponsored children and youth experience
the activities and learning opportunities at Camp Torenta. It
is that collaboration between the YMCA and DHS that allows
children and youth who could not afford to go to camp to be
able to attend! The Y is a true community partner in helping
everyone grow from the life experiences that come from
summer camp.

Having owned property in the
Lake City/Moorestown area for
over 30 years, my husband and
I were able to make the break
from the Detroit area and move
up North. The frst winter was
a tough one on me. My children,
grandchildren, sister, brother and
life-long friends were over 200
miles away; though a phone call
kept me connected, I missed
them all terribly. Was I really
going to be able to make the
transition, or would I just be a
very lonely soul?
I had read that the YMCA
would be coming to the area
and was very excited to
become a member. I had
been attending water aerobic
classes in my hometown and
had made friends through that
association.
I joined my frst water
aerobic class and was thrilled
to be in the pool and to meet
other ladies from the area. As
time went by, there was a core
group of women that came
to class and forged a close
bond and friendship. We
also enjoyed our instructor and
her friendship. We enjoyed
the exercise (and each other)
so much that we started to
come on days when there was
no class. We now know each
others families and share our
feelings: our joys, our sorrows
and our heartbreaks. We
share pictures of children and
grandchildren, of siblings and
spouses. We have dubbed
ourselves The Swim Chicks.
It was the Y that united
us. It has changed my
outlook on being here.
While I still make long distance
phone calls and take trips
downstate to visit my loved
ones, I now look forward
to getting up each day and
joining my friends in the pool.
And that has made all the
difference!

Cadillac Area Public Schools (CAPS) and
the Cadillac Area YMCA are excited about
their continued partnership in afterschool
programming. Specifcally, the elementary
afterschool tutoring and recreation program
targets students who may be struggling
academically.
Students are referred to the program by
their teachers. They enroll in the program
for six week sessions that meet fve days a
week. Each day YMCA staff, in partnership
with Chartwells, provides a snack
immediately after school. Then, Y staff
lead students in vigorous physical activity
and nutrition education lessons. Once the
snack and play are taken care of, students
are ready to learn again. CAPS teachers
organize tutoring lessons for Y staff to
work with students in small groups. YMCA
Program Director Mike Kelso said including
the elements of play, nutrition, and tutoring
is important. When students are coming
off a full day of school it really makes
sense to provide a snack and physical
activity. Its something we think is
essential for students to be successful
in their tutoring session. It really helps
reset their minds and bodie, preparing
them for more academic work.
This program initially started in the 2012-
2013 academic year at Lincoln Elementary.
When the program saw great success and
student achievement, it was expanded to
all four CAPS elementary schools for the
2013-2014 academic year. The program
is provided free of charge to students.
Much of our funding was for starting
the program. We have some funds
available to continue but now we are
really concentrating on making the
program fnancially sustainable.
Other funding partners in the program
that have helped make it a success include
Walmart, the United Way and Cadillac
Rotary.
YMCA
DAYCARE PROGRAM
Our family moved to Cadillac this past summer and among many other things,
we began searching for someone to help care for our children. After looking for
several months, we received the fall program book from the YMCA offering the
new daycare program. While my husband and I were excited about the childcare
option, we were nervous because our childcare had always been in-home. I
met with Debbie, the Daycare Director, to learn more about the new daycare
program and discussed my nervousness. Debbie was very understanding
and reassuring. She understood my reservations but was confdent I would be
pleased with the program. Debbie was absolutely correct!
Enrolling my boys in the YMCA daycare program has been a blessing to our
family. The daycare providers are wonderful! They provide loving, consistent
and encouraging care for my boys in my absence. My boys look forward to
going to school every day. They play games, do arts and crafts and socialize
with other children. We are so grateful for the YMCA daycare program and would
recommend the program to anyone looking for quality childcare.

TEEN IMPACT
PROGRAM
We think that the program was great
for our son. He gained self confdence,
he better understands that choices
made today impact the rest of his life,
and he found it to be a life changing
experience. He gained building blocks for
life. Some of the things discussed in the
group caused him to think and talk about
things that maybe he had not given much
thought to before. His sister has pointed
out that he thinks of others more often
now. Not only do we highly recommend
the Teen Impact Program, but our son
does as well.

I am sharing my story with you today
to thank you for changing my life. I
want you to understand the difference
youve made for me with your past
gifts to the YMCA. I really want you to
know that I am just one example of the
impact youve had on the youth and
young adults in our area.
From the very beginning of the YMCA
mission here in the Cadillac area, it
has been a huge part of my life and
growing up. As a kid, I was a part
of Y when it was a hang out place at
the old senior center across from the
high school football stadium. The Y
introduced me to many new friends
and opportunities. It was such a nice
change of pace for long summers when
I otherwise would have had nothing to
do. It taught me a lot about meeting
new friends and how to get out of my
comfort zone. It helped me grow into a
well-rounded kid.
The YMCA also introduced me to
a whole new world of fun when
they partnered with CAPS to run
Camp Torenta. I went to camp for
many years, often multiple weeks a
summer. I learned cool new songs, arts
and crafts, sports, games, and made
life-long friends. All of these camp
experiences taught me a lot about the
YMCA four core values of respect,
responsibility, caring, and honesty.
Values I still live by every day.
I carried all of these experiences and
these values into my adulthood when
I decided to give back as a camp
counselor. I cannot even begin to
explain how much two summers working
at camp changed my life for the better.
I walked away both summers with close
friends that will forever be a part of my
life. I met wonderful, fun, and amazing
kids that all taught me so much. Today,
I see those kids everywhere around
Cadillac and every time they recognize
me. Those reunions are so gratifying
because I am reminded that I positively
impacted a childs life!
When the new YMCA building opened
up, it was another big impact on my life!
It gave my friends and me something to
do and kept us out of trouble on snow
days, summer days, and whenever
we got bored. It was always a nice,
healthy alternative to anything else
we could have been doing! Since high
school, I have been using the YMCA
Wellness Center as a place to expand
friendships and grow physically,
spiritually and mentally. I have
met many new friends though the Ys
ftness programs, pick-up games, and
volunteering events. Being around this
community as an adult has taught me
a lot about staying committed, living a
healthy lifestyle in all aspects, and about
how important it is to live selfessly.
Because of what an impact the
Cadillac YMCA has had on my life, I
would like to thank everyone like you
who has been a part of building the Y
into what it is today. Thank you for all
the hard work you have put in. I can
personally say that your efforts and
your support have been noticed
and have made a huge impact on many
lives.
Last year your gift to the YMCAs
Annual Campaign supported the
development of youth programs and the
participation of youth and families in the
YMCA. I hope my story helps you know
how benefcial your support has been
over the years. I also hope it inspires
you to pledge to this years campaign. I
know we both would like other members
in our community to feel the impact of
the YMCA on their lives just as I have.
Please take a moment to consider such
a gift.
Thank You Again,
Seth Houk
