Type OSB Safety Shut-Off Valve
The Type OSB safety shut-off valve (figure 1) pro-
vides protection for a gas pressure regulation system
by immediately shutting off the flow of gas when the
pressure within the protected system reaches a specif-
ic set-point. The safety shut-off valve is installed be-
tween a pressure-reducing regulator and the inlet
pressure source as shown in figure 3. The Type OSB
requires a sensing line to be installed downstream of
the pressure-reducing regulator.
The Type OSB is a very accurate safety shut-off valve.
Accuracy is rated at 1% to 5% according to pressur-
es and service conditions.
The pressure sensing trip mechanism has a double
stage trip action. The first stage is the detection stage
and will only trip when the outlet pressure of the pres-
sure regulator reaches the set-pressure. The second
stage is the power stage, once tripped the closing
spring causing the valve plug to slam-shut and re-
mains closed until the valve is manually reset. The
second stage is submitted to all the inlet pressure vari-
ation and vibrations, none of which are transmitted to
the first stage.
The Type OSB is suitable for all pressure set-points
from 14.5 psig to 1015 psig (10 mbar to 72 bar) by
simply replacing the modular sensing element (mano-
metric device). There is also an optional manual emer-
gency button and an optional explosion proof remote
switch.

D Overpressure Protection Without Discharge
of GasUnder overpressure conditions, a Type OSB
shut-off valve stops the flow of gas rather than letting it
vent to atmosphere.
D Positive ShutoffAfter closing, the shut-off
valve stays closed until the system is shut down and
the valve is manually reset. Tight shutoff of elastomer-

nism, and valve plug assembly can be replaced with-
out removing the body from the line or disconnecting

1. The pressure/temperature limits in this bulletin and any applicable standard or code limitation should not be exceeded.
2. A pressure exceeding this value can cause failure of, or leakage from, pressure-containing components.
Principle of Operation
The Type OSB safety shut-off valve (figure 2) serves
to provide overpressure and/or underpressure protec-
tion by completely shutting off the flow of gas to the
downstream system. The safety shut-off valve with
external registration requires a downstream sensing
line. The shut off valve is installed upstream of a pres-
sure-reducing regulator as shown in figure 3.
Regulator outlet pressure registers on the side of the
diaphragm opposite of the control set-point spring. The
Type OSB safety shut-off valve tripping pressure is
determined by the setting of the control spring.
Overpressure: When the downstream pressure in-
creases past the set-point, the pressure on top of the
diaphragm overcomes the spring setting and moves
the manometric stem.
Underpressure: When the downstream pressure de-
creases below the set-point, the control spring pres-
sure below the diaphragm overcomes the downstream
pressure and pushes the diaphragm which moves the
manometric stem.

Principle of Operation (contd)
This action forces the stem to bump (or be pulled)
against the trip pin disengaging the first stage trip
mechanism (detection stage), which releases the se-
cond stage mechanism (power stage). The second
stage allows the closing spring to push the valve plug
sharply down onto the seat ring thus immediately inter-
rupting the supply of gas to the downsteam system.
As the downstream pressure decreases, inlet pressure
applies more force on the valve plug providing a posi-
tive shutoff. After closing, the valve plug stays closed
until the system is shut down and the safety shut-off
valve is reset.
Capacity Information
Table 1 gives flow capacities at selected pressure
drops across a wide-open Type OSB safety shutoff
valve. Capacities are in scfh (60_ F and 14.7 psia) of
0.6 specific gravity natural gas. To determine equiva-
lent capacities for air, propane, butane, or nitrogen,
multiply the listed capacity by the following appropriate
conversion factor: 0.775 for air, 0.628 for propane,
0.548 for butane, or 0.789 for nitrogen.
For gases of other specific gravities, multiply the given
capacity by 0.775, and divide by the square root of the
appropriate specific gravity. If the capacity is desired in
normal cubic meters per hour (m
3
/h) at 0_C and
1.01325 bar, multiply scfh by 0.0268.
Installation
The Type OSB may be installed in any position, but is
normally installed with a left-to-right flow path (flow
arrow on body) in a horizontal pipeline with the mecha-
nism box above the body. See figure 3 for typical pip-
ing installation.

The Type OSB can be used along with a token relief
valve to minimize unnecessary shutoff. The relief valve
is set to open before the Type OSB shut-off valve acti-
vates. This arrangement allows the relief valve to han-
dle minor overpressure problems such as gas thermal
expansion or seat leakage due to dirt moving through
the system which may move out of the regulator dur-
ing the next operating cycle. The shut-off valve does
activate if the regulator has a major malfunction with
excessive gas flow that exceeds the token relief ca-
pacity.
A selection guide is shown in figure 5 and dimensions
are shown in figure 6.
Resetting the Trip Mechanism
After the Type OSB has closed (see figure 4), it must
be reset before it can be placed back in service. Be-
fore resetting the Type OSB, check and correct the
reason for the overpressure/underpressure condition.
A bypass valve is fitted between the downstream and
upstream system to allow equalization of pressure be-
fore the Type OSB is reset. After the valve is reset, be
sure to close the equalizing bypass valve.

To reset the Type OSB safety shut-off valve, first close
the upstream block valve then open the equalization
valve to equalize the upstream and downstream pres-
sure, then open the front cover of the mechanism box.
In the top center location of the box, there is a red
shaft. Push this shaft up and to the right, this action
will lock in stage one. To reset the second stage use
the square reset tool located in the lower left corner of
the mechanism box. Place the square end of the tool
on the square shaft in the center of the box and rotate
clockwise. This action will compress the closing spring
and latch the second stage mechanism. Replace the
reset tool on its holder and replace the cover.
Ordering Information
When ordering, specify:
Application
1. Type of gas being controlled (natural gas, air, etc);
list any factors such as impurities in the gas that may
affect compatibility of the gas with the safety shut-off
valve trim parts.
2. Specific gravity of the gas
3. Inlet pressure

b. Maximum flow
4. Flow rates
a. Minimum flow
b. Maximum flow
5. Maximum allowable pressure drop
6. Set point
7. Line size and end connection size of adjacent piping
Construction
Refer to the Specifications table on page 2 and each
referenced table. Carefully review the description of
each specification and specify the desired selection
wherever there is a choice to be made. Approximate
weights and dimensions in figure 6. Always specify the
type number.
To determine capacities at pressure drops not given in
table 1, use the coefficients from the Specifications
table along with the sizing slide rule or the sizing no-
mographs in Catalog 10.
