How college students
can eat healthy
* Eat breakfast. College students tend to stay up late and
sleep in, but sleeping in at the expense of a healthy breakfast
can impact performance in the classroom and make students
more likely to overeat later in the day. A bowl of cereal with
some fresh fruit is not an especially expensive breakfast, but
it can help college students start their day off on an energetic
and healthy note.
* Snack healthy. Many students find snacks are an integral
part of hours-long study sessions. But trips to the vending
machine for candy bars or potato chips wont add much
nutritional value to your diet. Instead of being at the mercy
of vending machines, bring healthy snacks along during
study sessions. Fresh fruit, raw vegetables, Greek yogurt, and
whole wheat crackers are just a few snacks that pack a more
nutritious punch than traditional vending machine fare.
Healthy snacks also tend to provide more energy, making it
easier to endure late-night study sessions.
* Make pizza healthier. Pizza is a staple of many college
students diets, so its likely unrealistic for them to quit pizza
cold turkey, especially since there are ways to make pizza
healthier. When ordering a pizza, college students can
request their pizza be prepared with whole wheat dough,
which is healthier than traditional pizza dough. In addition,
ask for less cheese and more tomato sauce. Such alterations
are simple and healthy without sacrificing taste.
* Scale back on sugar. Sugar can cause weight gain without
providing much in the way of nutrition. College students
can cut back on their sugar intake by avoiding sugary
beverages, including soda and drinks like sweetened iced tea
or lemonade. College is also when many young men and
women first start drinking coffee, which some people prefer
to take with sugar. But students looking to keep weight off
and reduce their sugar intake can choose to drink their
coffee black or with just light cream or fat-free milk to
ensure their morning cup of joe is not contributing to a
bigger waistline.
* Drink more water. The symptoms of dehydration mimic
those of hunger, and college students might turn to snacks
when all they really need is a glass of water. If you find
yourself snacking shortly after eating a meal, then you might
just need to drink more water.

Apple Trample 5k on Saturday, October
18, 2014. Te Apple Trample provides
an excellent opportunity right in our
backyard to do your frst 5k or work on
your 5k time. Te Apple Trample is a
long standing tradition, part of a larger
community event that celebrates the his-
tory and heritage of our area. What bet-
ter time to take on a personal challenge.
Te Wellness Center at Berkeley Medi-
cal Center is ofering a FREE Run/Walk
Training Program to help you train
for you frst 5k or improve your time.
Te training program will be held on
Wednesdays, August 27 October 15,
2014 from 5:30-6:30pm. Our training
program will give you the opportunity to
get in shape, gain cardiovascular endur-
ance, improve running or walking form
and/or improve your time so you are
ready for this years Apple Trample 5k.
FREE and open to all ages, levels and
abilities, anyone from walkers to ad-
vanced runners are guaranteed to beneft
from this program. Te program will fo-
cus on running/walking during each ses-
sion with core and resistance work each
week specifcally designed to improve
running and walking form and ability.
Also, topics such as heart rate training,
training plan, proper fueling, and injury
prevention will be addressed each week.
New this year is Walk with Ease, an exer-
cise program from the Arthritis Founda-
tion. Walk with Ease will help you get in
shape; walk safely and comfortably; im-
prove your fexibility, strength and stami-
na; and reduce pain and feel great. In
studies, Walk with Ease has proven to re-
duce pain, increase balance and strength,
and improve overall health. Walk with
Ease will be followed for those want-
ing to train to walk the Apple Trample.
Te 35th Apple Trample 5k is set for
October 18. Te walkers will start at
10:30am and runners at 11:30am. Te
start will be at Te Wellness Center at
Berkeley Medical Center and the fnish
will be at the Martinsburg High School
Track. Te race follows the parade
route through downtown Martinsburg.

YARD SALE TIPS
Schedule your yard sale at a convenient time. Since most people
have the day off, Saturday is a good time. Start your sale fairly
early to catch early birds.
Advertise your yard sale. Place an ad in your Buyers Guide and list
the types of items you plan to sell. Use our Yard Sale Kit signs to
direct people to your sale; keep any writing on the signs simple
and large enough to be read from a car.
Prepare your articles for sale. The cleaner an article is, the more
likely it is to sell. So dust off the knickknacks, wash and hang up
clothing, and display items for easy viewing. Make sure you label
anything that does not work.
Price your items realistically. Many people go to yard sales
looking for bargains and will barter. Prepare for that in the price.
Make sure the price is clearly marked on each item.
Make any final preparations. Make sure you have plenty of
change and a calculator to add up prices. Grab some boxes,
sacks and newspaper to wrap fragile items. Arrange for helpers,
especially during the busy morning hours.
With just a little planning, you can have a great yard sale!
