OPERATIONAL TRAINING
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After the course, the successful participants are able to:
Defne the principles of DP.
Recognise the component parts of a DP system.
Understand the relationship between vessel movement,
position reference systems, sensors, computers,
propulsion units and feedback.
Understand the concept of redundancy.
Understand the DP modes of control.
Describe the operation of sensors and common position
reference systems.
Describe the operation of computers.
Describe propulsion units, types and confgurations.
Understand power supply, redundancy and management.
Practice communication and watch handover
procedures.
TARGET GROUP
Navigators, DP operator trainees and other users of DP
systems who would like to start the Nautical Institutes DP
Operator Certifcation Scheme.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
With reference to NIs circular 004/2011, dated 02.12.2011.

The Minimum qualifcation to be set at STCW
Regulation II/1 - II/2 - II/3 Deck and Regulation III/1 - III/2
- III/3 Engine.
Alternative appropriate marine vocational qualifcation will
be considered on a case by case basis.
Prospective DPOs, who are in the process of training
for an STCW certifcate, can start the DP scheme and
complete Basic (Induction) course and 30 days
Familiarisation only.
Participants not qualifying for entry into the Nautical
Institutes DP Operator Certifcation scheme may follow
the course, but will not participate in the NI examination
and will be issued a certifcate of attendance for a DP
Awareness Course.
LEARNING PROCESS
The training will be a combination of theoretical lessons
and practical exercises. During the course each
participant will have his own operator station with generic
DP software.

be tested by the NIs online
examination system at the end
of the course.

/ SPECIAL INFORMATION The DP Basic Operator course
is the frst phase of the
Nautical Institute (NI) DP
Operator Certifcation Scheme.
The course participants will be
issued with the NI Dynamic
Positioning Operators Log
Book upon successful
completion of the Basic
Operator Course.
/ LANGUAGE The course documentation
is written in English and the
course will be held in English,
unless otherwise agreed.
