Learning is a natural activity for human beings at
any stage in life, and there is always a need to learn
something new as long as one is active and alive.
The need to continue learning throughout life
stems from various forces. For example, one of the
mainsprings of lifelong learning is the change in social
roles that every individual is confronted with right from
infancy to old age. Another mainspring of lifelong
learning is the physiological growth and change that
take place at diferent stages of life. There are several
other factors social, economic, cultural and the ones
relating to the inner, personal life that re!uire
ac!uisitions of new skills, knowledge and attitudes, and
relearning or even unlearning of what was ac!uired
before. These forces have been operating from time
immemorial, and they continue to operate perennially,
in"uencing all human beings in underdeveloped as well
as developing countries. #n conse!uence, some form of
lifelong education exists, whether it is consciously
recogni$ed or not, in all societies.
