Chapter V

SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary, findings, conclusions and recommendations of

the study. This also includes the areas for further study that will aid future researchers who

wants to pursue a study related to this research.

Summary

This study aimed to correlate the academic performance and related learning

experience of level IV nursing students of Aquinas University of Legazpi. Furthermore, it

endeavored to bridge the gap of the two variables.

The quantitative method of research was utilized in the study. The data from the

College of Nursing and Health Sciences office served as the secondary data in order to

identify the degree of relationship between academic performance and related learning

experience. The initial respondents were 95 students but due to incomplete grades of some

of the respondents, only 84 randomly selected respondents were left.

Specifically, the study sought to the following problems:

1. What is the performance of the Level IV Nursing Students in terms of:

a. Academic Performance in Major Course Subjects

b. Related-Learning Experience

2. What is the degree of relationship of the academic performance and clinical

performance of Level IV Nursing Students?

3. What can be the implications based on the result?

Findings

The study revealed the following findings:

1. The mean of the results in Academic Performance ranged from 82% to 84%. The

computed standard deviation of the subjects ranges from 2.0 to 3.0. With these

results, the respondents’ ratings were fair.

2. The mean of the results in Related Learning Experience (RLE) ranged from 82% to

85%. The standard deviation computed per variable ranged from 1.4 to 3.0.

Following the standard equivalent of grades, the RLE performances of the

respondents were fair except for the NCM 101.1 which is satisfactory.

3. The Computed Pearson Product Correlation (r) of all the subjects being compared

ranged from 0.418 to 0.642. The r of the General Weighted Average (GWA) in

both Academic and RLE Performance was 0.765. The data also showed 0.01

significant relationships to all variables being compared.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. The Academic Performance results of the students are fair and close to each other.

2. The Related Learning Experience performance results are fair and close to each

other.

3. Lastly, most of the compared subjects have a moderate degree of relationship.

Based from the 0.01 significant relationships of the variables it can be implied that

the Academic Performance is a predictor of the Related Learning Experience

Performance of the students.

Recommendations

Based on the conclusions, the following recommendations are offered:

1. The student performance inside the classroom should be given utmost attention,

especially the area of study which they found most difficult. There should be an

evaluation of what the students have learned every after discussion. The teachers

should identify the weak areas of the students and they must formulate solutions

like giving remedial or formulating a study group where students can learn more.

2. To improve the clinical or related learning experience of the students, they should

be taught how to operate state-of-the-art gadgets and equipment which are only

available in the hospitals. It should be done to hone the student’s knowledge and

skills.

3. The clinical instructors should guide and guard the students against any

misconceptions within the classroom setting and clinical area. Students learn

theories in the classroom and practice them in the hospitals. Many of the things

learned in the classroom are ideal, thus, each clinical instructors must promote ideal

hospital practices.

4. The clinical instructors should provide students with opportunities for enhancing

their critical thinking and decision-making skills needed in patient care. The

students can have individual case discussion of their respective patients. The

students, as well as the clinical instructor, can also conduct comprehensive case

presentations to further understand the disease process of the chosen cases.

5. The clinical instructors should submit the grades in major subjects and RLE on time

to monitor the performance of the students in the classroom and clinical setting.

6. The college must formulate and implement programs that would further enhance

knowledge, skills and attitude of the nursing students. These programs may include

seminars regarding updates in the field, more workshops and training regarding the

complex nursing procedures which are not taught in the classroom.

7. The faculty must also undergo trainings and workshops regarding the latest trends

in the nursing profession; for them to have a broader understanding and stronger

foundation in every nursing principle and procedure, thereby improving their

teaching strategies and students’ learning.
