Why did you decide to do an
executive MBA?
When I started work, I had a career aspiration to
be head of a research department by the time I
retire. I reached that point earlier than expected
and needed a new aspirational goal. I realised
that developing my career required lateral steps
into the commercial worldan area where I
did not have the same credibility as I had within
research. I also love to learn, so I decided that
undertaking an EMBA at Ashridge Business
School would constitute one of the rst steps
along this new road.
How will the EMBA help you in
your career?
Without being on the EMBA programme, I would
never have been considered for my current job.
The combination of a secondment opportunity
and an EMBA showed my versatility and tenacity
in seeking new opportunities in which I could
grow. Through the EMBA, my understanding of
leadership has become more strategic. I have
greater personal condence and feel empowered,
rather than bamboozled, by business jargon. I
work in an industry where constant evolution is
the norm; I now condently challenge ideas and
propose alternative paths forward.
What were some of the
important takeaways from the
EMBA course?

The Ashridge EMBA course enabled me to
become a stronger strategic leader with greater
business acumenone who understands how
to position an organisation ensuring that hard
and soft elements are aligned. It helped me to
understand the need for continuous innovation
and how to re-engineer and lead change in a
multi-cultural environment. Personally, I now
have greater self-awareness so that I can adjust
my behaviours to suit the situation and market
myself more effectively, and a completely new
global network of colleagues with expertise and
experience that I can tap into.
Best career or personal advice
youve ever received?
Research training is fabulous; my rst boss said
to me to never stop asking why to everything
you see and do. Most people cannot effectively
answer that question and I see it as an
opportunity to propose new and innovative ideas
in a non-confrontational way.
What was one of your biggest
challenges that youve faced in
your career?
One morning, it was announced that the site I
worked on was to close. This was a massive
shock to everyone. I needed to treat the staff
in my department with dignity as we worked
out an exit plan, but at the same time I had
to go through the change-curve myself and
contemplate my next move. It was a test of both
my leadership, empathy and communication
skills. This process has made me a better leader
in the long run.
Where would you like to be
in your career ve years from
now?
I never set my horizon on a specic job, but on
the skills I want to learn and job roles Id like
to explore. I hope my next role will allow me to
lead by example in terms of setting the strategic
direction, creating effective partnerships and
sourcing new projects, whilst helping others to
grow and develop within a healthcare setting.
I am considering chief operating ofcer roles;
eventually I aspire to become a CEO and sit on the
board of directors in health-related industries.
Which great leader do you
admire and why?
I have had an afnity with different leaders,
depending on the stage of my career. During
my EMBA, I was captivated by the business
acumen shown by Warren Buffet, CEO of
Berkshire Hathaway. He knows how to conduct
research and is tenacious in chasing a goal he
believes in. I only hope my convictions are as
strong. Inspirational female role models have
been people like Amy Johnson, the pioneering
aviator who broke with convention and took
risks, or Shami Chakrabarti, the civil libertarian
who followed her own convictions. Both are truly
inspirational women who show what you can
achieve if you set your mind to it.

HIRING INTENTIONS
REBOUND IN SINGAPORE
BUT LOOMING LEGISLATION MAY PROMPT A TALENT RETHINK ACCORDING

Singapore 3 J uly 2014 The hiring intentions of Singapore businesses have
rebound for the second half of the year, reversing the downward trend of the
recent quarters, according to the latest Hudson Report: Employment Trends

released today.
Nearly half of employers (47.3%) intend to increase headcount over the next six months, up 7.8
percentage points (pp) from the rst quarter, while intentions to decrease headcount are down 3.8pp to
3.5%.
Growing business sentiment is having a positive effect on the recruitment market. said Emmanuel White,
Regional Director of Hudson Singapore. Business condence is high on the back of a healthy expansion in
the global economy and the expected growth of Singapores GDP at 2-4% for 2014.

Compared to a year ago, the picture is much more positive. Weve gone from headcount freezes to
companies now looking to expand their workforce and open roles are being replaced immediately.
Its encouraging to see the upbeat hiring sentiment with most industries in Singapore, but the marketplace
remains challenging and uncertainties in the global macroeconomic environment remain, he said.
The new Fair Consideration Framework which will come into effect in the coming August sets out stricter
rules on hiring of foreign professionals with an objective to urge all employers to consider Singaporeans
fairly in lling jobs.

It pushes businesses to reconsider their strategy in attracting and maintaining a
competitive workforce to ride the wave of growth.
HIRING INTENTIONS BY SECTOR
Banking & Financial Services is the industry seeing the strongest hiring intentions - 56.3% of employers
intend to hire more staff in the second half of the year, up 6.3pp from Q1 2014.
IT&T and Manufacturing & Industry rank second and third with positive hiring intentions standing at
52.4% and 43.6% respectively.
Employment expectation continues to decline within the Consumer sector - 42.0% of employers looking
to increase headcount, down 1.2pp from Q1.
Healthcare & Life Sciences has the lowest hiring intentions among all surveyed industries 41.9% of
employers are looking to increase headcount.
It is encouraging to see the sustained upbeat sentiment with Banking & Financial Service - the sector has
maintained an upward trend in positive hiring intentions since Q3 2013, reecting an increase in
condence of local banking businesses as well as reafrming Singapores position as the regional hub of
banking and nancial services, said White.
The growing demand is mainly driven by a focus on business critical roles such as compliance & risk and
front ofce relationship positions. Insurance is also an important growth area, he noted. The most valued
candidates are those who have both deep knowledge of the local market and strong regional experiences.
IT&T has reversed the pessimism in the previous two quarters and posted a strong growth (10.1pp) in
hiring intentions heading into the second half of the year. Expertise in SAP, security and supply chain
continues to be hot, said White. Although technical skills are highly valued, weve also seen an emerging
trend that is driving the demand for IT professionals with business partnering skills.
Organizations are in need of IT people who can go to the frontline of business, leveraging their technical
knowledge to optimize process, support sales and create value. These roles require not only a command
of good technical skills, but also business acumen, strategic thinking and a deep knowledge of the
industry, he said.
In Manufacturing & Industrial, we are seeing signicant job growth from chemical, oil & gas, medical
devices and pharmaceutical industries, said White. Demand is high for trade compliance roles as
organizations increase their focus on regulatory compliance across South East Asia. Skills in transfer pricing
are also valued as companies look to make the most of tax breaks.
The downward trend continues with the Consumer sector, but the decline has been moderated from a
drop of 5.7pp in Q1 to 1.2pp, indicating less pessimism on the employment outlook over the second half
of the year. More employers (54.3%) are looking to keep headcount steady. As major players in the

Experience in leading medium scale software
development project through a full software development
life cycle
