en/ironments w,ere o/erall penetration of I-8s is low and as s)3, 3omp)ter litera30 is also low. 8,is paper
aims to in/estigate ,ow 3omp)ter litera30 affe3ts .ni/ersit0 of Maid)g)ri st)dents9 per3eption of a
3omp)teri7ed re3ord s0stem. It st)died t,e /iews of sampled st)dents of t,e )ni/ersit0 in order to as3ertain ,ow
t,eir le/el of 3omp)ter litera30 affe3ts t,eir desire for t,eir re3ord s0stem to 5e 3omp)teri7ed. :esear3,
;)estions were anal07ed wit, a /iew to determining t,e asso3iation t,at e<ists 5etween le/el of 3omp)ter
litera30 of st)dents and t,eir desire for a 3omp)teri7ed re3ord s0stem% and t,e desira5ilit0 of s)3, a s0stem
among 3omp)ter literate and non 3omp)ter literate st)dents. Simple per3entage anal0sis and -,i S;)are test
were )sed to in/estigate t,e le/el of desira5ilit0 of 3omp)teri7ation% and t,e asso3iation 5etween 3omp)ter
litera30 and desire for 3omp)teri7ed re3ord s0stem% respe3ti/el0. It was fo)nd t,at among 5ot, 3omp)ter literate
and non 3omp)ter literate st)dents% t,e 3omp)teri7ed re3ord s0stem was ,ig,l0 desired. It was also fo)nd t,at
t,ere is no asso3iation 5etween le/el of 3omp)ter litera30 and desire for 3omp)teri7ation among st)dents
sampled. 8,is implies t,at e/en in areas w,ere t,ere is low I-8 penetration and 3omp)ter litera30%
3omp)teri7ation 3an still 5e ,ig,l0 desired 50 )ni/ersit0 st)dents.

for smaller organi7ations% w,ile 3omp)teri7ed re3ord management s0stems are ad/antageo)s to larger
organi7ations. 8,ese ad/antages 3an 5e gained mainl0 in t,e entr0% editing and report prod)3tion. 8,e0 3an also
5e gained in terms of amo)nt of spa3e re;)ired to maintain s)3, a s0stem. =n a3ademi3 instit)tion managing a
large n)m5er of st)dents9 re3ords gains signifi3ant ad/antages t,at en3ompass all aspe3ts of data entr0 as well as
retrie/al% editing and report prod)3tion.
= ser/er-5ased re3ord s0stem is a re3ord s0stem t,at )tili7es ser/er te3,nolog0 and in3orporates a >ata5ase
Management S0stem (>(MS) to store data and pro/ide f)n3tionalit0 ne3essar0 for t,e relia5le management and

format i.e. )sing paper files% 3an 5e stored% managed and retrie/ed in an ele3troni3 format and% if re;)ired in ,ard

respondents) were non 3omp)ter literate st)dents. 8,is is opposed to 2& (2&O) w,o were 3omp)ter literate.
8,ere appears to 5e ,ig, ent,)siasm for 3omp)teri7ation% e/en among non 3omp)ter literate st)dentsD t,is is
slig,tl0 s)rprising 5e3a)se one wo)ld ,a/e e<pe3ted a degree of s*epti3ism from t,ose st)dents t,at were not
e<perien3ed wit, )sing 3omp)ters% possi5l0 d)e to 3omp)ter an<iet0 and te3,nop,o5ia. E)rt,ermore% o)t of a
