struggle to maintain its
independence in the face of
European depredations
was recounted. While the
recent threat came from
communism, British

parallel developments, as it
appears that P. Laval of
France and Generalissimo
Chiang have both
approached President Taft
of the USA urging him to
reconsider his heretofore
hands-off policy towards
the wars in both Europe
and Asia.
These approaches may
have been well-timed,
given the recent sharp turn
of events in the course of
those struggles.
