Kindergarten

Our curriculum is developmentally appropriate for young children and based on

Integrating the Faith (Concordia Publishing House), the Texas Essential Knowledge
and Skills (TEKS), and Common Core Standards. Classroom instruction of the core
subjects focused on the following:

Religion
The One in Christ curriculum from Concordia Publishing House focuses on
Bible stories about Jesus love for us, and God's forgiveness. Bible stories are
discussed each day and bible verses are practiced throughout the year.
Kindergarten students also participate in a weekly Chapel service.

Reading
In Kindergarten, special attention is given to the development of reading
skills, reading comprehension, language and writing skills. Multi-faceted
approaches are used to ensure that children with different learning styles
and developmental rates are consistently motivated to read and write at
their highest level.

Language Arts
Reading Street from Scott Foresman is used to introduce various forms
of narrative texts to promote a lifelong love of reading. The focus is to
engage students in phonemic awareness (hearing and identifying
sounds), phonics (looking at letters and identifying sounds), vocabulary,
fluency, and comprehension. Students also read from various books and
use the Accelerated Reader program to assess comprehension.

Wri ti ng
Shared and independent writing processes are practiced daily. As capital
and lowercase letters, punctuation and story telling skills are being used;
independent spelling is implemented as learners progress to standard spelling.

Handwriting
Handwriting Without Tears provides the skills for handwriting readiness
and printing. Multi-sensory lessons are shared in developmental sequence that are
focused on the three stages of writing (imitation, copying, and independent writing.)

Math
The Envision Math program incorporates a variety of manipulatives to facilitate the
exploration and understanding of numbers, problem solving and logistical
reasoning. This establishes a strong foundation for the teaching of more advanced
concepts including graphing, measurement, geometry, time and money skills.

Science
Science in the Kindergarten classroom is experimental as students discover by
the use of hands-on, laboratory experiences.

Social Studies
Kindergarten students learn about maps and explore basic geographic features
of the earth. As they develop an awareness and appreciation for other cultures,
students come to better understand their role as Christian citizens in the world.

Enrichment Curriculum

Music
Kindergartners learn the enjoyment of music both as a listener and a participant.

Art
Art projects are a part of the regular curriculum. Age-appropriate activities allow the
students to express themselves using a variety of mediums.

Technology
Technology education supports the classroom curriculum.

Physical Education
The P.E. program emphasizes basic motor and social skills learning the rules of
team sports and demonstrating Christian sportsmanship.

Spanish
Kindergarten students expand their vocabulary and use of verbs through lessons
centered around childrens books.
