Hi Im Leroy, currently in my 3rd Year of Civil Engi-
neering at UQ. Studying and just being in Brisbane
has been a joyful experience so far for me. A big
part of this experience has been with the amazing
group of Malaysians around me.
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder and
truly enough I have grown to embrace the Malay-
sian Way even more being far away from home. I
truly hope that 2014 will be a better year for UQM-
SA and its community. This club is more than just
fun for me and I hope it continues to foster everlasting friendships throughout!

Hello everyone! My name is Aaron! Currently

ment (Major in Real Estate).

body who is in need of help! Please do
not hesitate to come talk to any of the
committees when you need help!
I always believe in providing what we
could for the others in order to make
this world a better place for the people
to live in. Sharing is caring and being
nice to people can be a good legacy to
leave behind.
Studying in UQ or Brisbane is an ad-
venture. So dont worry and lets have
an adventurous year together! :)
But fear not!

Secretary
Fiona Fong Pui Wun
Treasurer
Mohamad Faisal Imran Kamarizan
Hello! I am Fiona from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Am studying Bachelor of Pharmacy. A girl
who can be extremely quiet sometimes and
extremely playful at certain times.
Love travelling, shopping, eating and COF-
FEE! (High-fve all cofeeholics out there!) ;)
A heart-warming welcome to all of you who
just joined us, and a huge thanks to everyone
who continues supporting us. Best regards!
:D
The names Mohamad Faisal Imran Kamarizan, but Im commonly known as
Faisal around here. Im doing my 2nd year in Bachelor of Engineering (Electri-
cal) and Im warning you, its not for the faint of heart.
When Im not busy being a zombie in the uni-
versity, I enjoy frisbee, long runs and baking.
Yes. I do enjoy baking. But I would suggest you
check your insurance before tasting any of my
creations. If you are able to speak in Japanese,
I believe we can defnitely be best of friends.
With our Malaysian mentality and my love of
Japanese, I am sure we can click right away.
I am hoping to know the new faces of UQMSA
better. If you see me anywhere not saying Hi!,
go ahead and scold me. I am serious! I might
just be a bit shy to greet because I can be quite
shy at times. See you soon! :3
Assalamualaikum and konnichiwa!
Greetings peeps!

Social Convener
Lin Rui Leong
Social Convener
Mohamad Izat Ibrahim
Hi, my name is Leong Lin Rui but most
people just call me Lin. I will be your so-
cial convenor for this year and I cannot
say how excited I am to meet every one
of you (though I do not think it is physi-
cally possible).
So, here is a little something about my-
self. I am from KL, born and raised there.
I have a pretty sharp voice and I do get
quite loud when Im excited over some-
thing. Most of my friends say that they
can hear me from a mile away though
I really do think they are exaggerating.
So, if I do accidently screech into your
ear, I apologise in advance.
My favorite things to do are to travel
and try out new things. The sheer ex-
citement you get when you are trying
out new things and not knowing how it
may turn out excites me. Travelling, well,
who does not love travelling? I love ex-
ploring new places and immersing my-
self in new cultures, food and of course,
the shopping. Absolutely love shopping!
Anyway, I am really looking forward to
meeting you guys. I wish you guys all
the best and have a great year in UQ and
in Brisbane.
Hey everyone, Izat here. I am the Social Convener of UQM-
SA and a 2nd year Chemical Engineering student in UQ.
I love traveling, thrills (skydive and bungee anyone?), mu-
sic, astronomy, science and food. If we have any of these
in common (and lets be real: all Malaysian like food) then
we will have a lot to talk about!
Despite being the social convener, I am quite shy at times.
But the reason I joined UQMSA was to help people fnd
adventure in their stint in Australia. So dont hesitate to
come say hello or ask for help or whatever it is.
Lets have fun this year, yeah?
9
Assalamualaikum, and hello people!
The name is Azmir, usually pronounced as Azme. So yea just call me Azme then.
Bits about myself:
I am currently pursuing my second year in Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering.
Living in St.Lucia, Brisbane and Shah Alam, Selangor. Studied at SMK Seksyen 9
and Kolej Mara Seremban.
I enjoy sports, photography, music, food,
sleep and recently added to the things-
that-make-me-happy list is traveling. Once
you study oversea, you just want to see the
rest of the world.
I have three more years in UQ, so I will be
here to guide you in any way I can. Do come
to all of our upcoming events, make new
friends. Approach any one of us. We do not
bite. Do we? I dont.
Lastly to all you newcomers, enjoy your
stay here in Australia, mates!
Education Convener
Boon Cheng Ng
Education Convener
Azmir Zulkiply
Hi everyone out there scrolling through this blog, I am Boon Cheng from Selangor.
(p/s. Despite living in the countrys most urbanised state, I am just kampong boy
from a paddy and fsherman town. Dont bother to mention its name as you will
have not heard of it even if I do :P). I am currently in my fnal year of pursuing Bach-
elor of Regional and Town Planning.
Talking about some facts about me, I
would perceive myself to be a typical
Malaysian guy that loves food and a guy
that are willing to hang out just for food!
I play a little bit of video games and bad-
minton as part of my leisure activities
too. Looking forwards to knowing and
serving you guys throughout the year. :)
Do drop by and chat with me during the
events organised by UQMSA!

Nur Aqilah Zulife Zulkifi
WeIcome to Brisbane! I am more known as Shawn, and as my position in UQMSA
states, I am the IT guy. However, I am not studying IT (surprisingly?!). I am a second
year Chemical Engineering student. Although born in Klang, Selangor, I do not have
a Bak Kut Teh frenzy.
I enjoy coding (what a geek), volleyball and frisbee. Somehow, I look more ap-
proachable to most people (meh, self-praise XD), so do not hesitate to talk to me or
ask me for help! ;) kthxbye *fees*
Hi, I am Aqilah, your IT convener (together with Shawn) this year. Currently a third
year Chemical Engineering student in UQ. I love photography, books and travel-
ling, though I do not get to travel much. But hey, they say reading is travelling. If
you count that, I have been to the end of the universe and back! Alright enough
about me -
Welcome mate!
To all new and returning members, may you have a good year ahead, and create
lots of memories together with UQMSA. Brisbane is a good place to be and all the

Evena is currently pursuing the Bachelor of Science,
majoring in Psychology. She was one of the mentors in
the UQMSA Getting Started Workshop, sharing her insightful experience. Currently,
she is a marketing ofcer of the Australian Chinese Youth Association (ACYA). As a
fellow Malaysian, she has portrayed proactive and critical thinking skills in contrib-
uting towards the success of the UQMSA Getting Started Workshop.
Brief Introduction
Getting More with Uni-Life
Ever wonder or suddenly realise that your uni-life is flled with same routine and
boredom every day? Ever thought of contributing something great towards the
community? Ever thought of doing something more in your uni-life?
If you fnd yourself in such situation then perhaps this section of the newsletter
will provide you a brief insight and encouragement into how to get more from uni-
life. With this, UQMSA is delighted to have one of our proactive volunteers, Evena
Wong sharing her thoughts with us J
Passion and Interest
The strange thing is that it didnt start out
with me being passionate or anything. I
was doing a rather Scientifc degree, and I
wanted to be able to use my love for art and
design to have fun in university. Why not
be useful at the same time, I thought. It was
through this interest that I applied for a Mar-
keting Ofcer position in ACYA, and I have
discovered since then, so much more than I
bargained for.
Passion is often the main trigger for people
deciding to get involved. However, this was
not a direct cause for Evena in the beginning.
Instead, an interest in art and design, and a
desire to be useful lead to her involvement
in something more. A desire to reach out
and connect, and a desire to self-improve
were motivating forces that kept her going.
Ultimately, involvement in co-curriculum
activities enriched her uni-life with difer-
ent exciting experiences.
Barrier, Fear & Hardship
Like any others, Evena encountered
barrier, fear and hardship as well.
Perhaps the biggest barrier and fear
Evena ever faced was getting over
her phase of discomfort. As a self
described simple girl from Ma-
laysia, who was suddenly thrust
among a body of insanely capable
and well-rounded international stu-
dents, it was rather a daunting ex-
perience for her initially.
In addition, getting involved in
co-curricular activities has been
time consuming. Consequently, she
sometimes fnds herself pulling
all-nighters, questioning her choices
in life. Nevertheless, she asserted
that it doesnt need to be this way.
Time management is everything.
27
Valuable & Exciting
Experiences
Through proactive involvement in
co-curricular activities, she has obtained
important insights into how things and
events are run behind the scenes, as
well as the ability to work within a team.
She has gained a deep appreciation of
the talent and capabilities of the people
she is working with. She was also able
to make connections that meant some-
thing special to her. A sense of achieve-
ment, and knowing that she was able to
be useful, helpful and productive are
perhaps the most rewarding experienc-
es she gets from volunteering.
A Little of Tips to
Newbies
You will probably be very afraid, very
uncomfortable, or generally unmotivat-
ed for a start. Thats okay. Start some-
where you know youll relate to. If you
like free food, for example, attend a
welcoming barbeque. Meet people, say
hello. Maybe youll meet someone who
will invite you to something, which just
might be your niche in life. Maybe youll
fall in love. Maybe youll get scouted
and become an awesome movie star.
Whatever it is, do something out of pure
interest, and youll be surprised at how
far it can take you!
Closing Remarks
Thing does not come without overcoming barrier and fear. Who knows what a leap
of faith might lead you to?!

This restaurant on Brunswick St Mall,
has re-opened under new owners and

bench dining overlooking the mall and
downstairs dining ideal for a party of up
