Intermediate English Communication Class Lesson Plans

Introduction
I will be teaching an Intermediate English Communication class at Penn State during the
Fall semester, 2011. It will meet every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 to 10:15 (75
minutes) at the Willard Building, in room 201. There will be approximately 10 to 15 students
ranging in age from 18 to 25.
The course will be for international students who come from different cultural
backgrounds. The goal of this course is for the students to acquire the ability to use English in
conversation in addition to their knowledge of the grammatical rules. In addition, it is expected
that each class will be fun and encouraging so as increasing the speaking of English. In order to
facilitate communicative skills, my students will recognize how to use prepositions (Lesson Plan
I), talk about others appearance and style (Lesson Plan II), and follow or give directions to
arrive at a destination (Lesson Plan III), among other things. I will teach them English grammar
and vocabulary, as well as speaking and conversation skills. The students will sometimes work in
pairs, sometimes in small groups, and other times we will do activities as a whole class.
The students will be graded in four parts. Ten percent of their grade will be based on
attendance, the midterm will be twenty percent of their grade, their final project, a class
presentation, will make up thirty percent of their grade, and finally they will take a quick review
quiz at the beginning of each class based on what they learned in the previous class which will
total forty percent of their grade. It is expected that each student will study hard, to do his or her
own work, and be ready for each class and every quiz.
