The Shard

The Shard will be the tallest building in the European Union. The mixed-use 310 m (1,016 ft) vertical city of high-quality offices,
restaurants, hotel and exclusive residential apartments will total over 900,000 square feet.
Key strategies:

WRAP procurement wording has been used from the client through the supply chain which
drives waste and cost savings.

Top-down construction allows the sub and superstructure to be worked

on simultaneously,
saving time on the programme, which enabled a unique jump start on the core.

Off site manufacture is used extensively, which increases efficiency and reduces site waste.
which are demonstrated in WRAP case studies. There is also a section in WRAPs Designing
Out Waste guide on off site construction.

Mace used WRAPs Material Logistics Plan template for the Shard and have since used this
on other projects in the London Bridge Place development.
Sellar Properties who part own the developers Teighmore Construction worked with WRAP in
2008 to develop waste procurement wording. The Shard main contractor, Mace signed up to
Halving Waste to Landfill in early 2009. Mace have worked extensively with WRAP to develop
guidance on Material Logistics Planning which has been incorporated into the Shard project.
Outcomes:

So far, 92% of site waste is currently being diverted from landfill. 98% of waste from off-site
manufacturing processes is diverted from landfill.

Using off site construction reduced insulation waste to a quarter of traditional construction.

Logistics strategies have helped schedule deliveries, reducing congestion and CO

emissions.
