1.0 Introduction

These operating instructions contain fundamental directions on how to
transport, assemble, operate and maintain the steam jet ejector (SJE)
in a safe, correct and economical manner.

Paying attention to these instructions will help to avoid dangerous situations,
to reduce repair costs and outage time and to increase the reliability and life
expectancy of the SJE.

2.0 Safety, safety precautions

2.1 Important instructions concerning safety which, when disregarded, could
lead to the endangerment of persons, of the installed apparatus and its func-
tioning, have been marked in these instructions with a .

It is most important that the fitter in charge resp. skilled workers/Owner/
Manager read these instructions through thoroughly before effecting
transport, assembly, commissioning and maintenance and that these in-
structions are observed at all times.

Not only are the instructions as stated under this item (Safety) to be
observed but also those safety instructions given under other headings.

2.2 Qualification of personnel, training

The assembly, operation and maintenance of the SJE must be carried out
solely by suitably qualified personnel.

Therefore the Owner/Manager must ascertain that the personnel designated
to carry out jobs/activities in connection with this SJE have the required qual-
ifications resp. have been suitably trained and that they fully understand the
contents of these operating instructions.

The extent of responsibility, competence and supervision of personnel must
be determined exactly by the Owner/ Manager.

2.3 These operating instructions must be always available at the SJE's
service point.

2.4 Possible dangers on non-observation of the safety measures

Non-observation of the safety measures can lead to the endangerment of
persons as well as of the environment, of the SJE and of other apparatus
connected to it. Non-observation of these safety measures can lead to the
loss of all rights to claim indemnification.

In particular, Non-observation can cause the following dangerous situations:
- breakdown of important functions of the steam jet ejector/the plant,
- failure of prescribed methods for maintenance & care,
- endangerment of persons, e.g. mechanical and chemical effects,
- endangerment of the environment through leakage of noxious
substances.

2.5 Working according to the safety rules

The safety measures in these operating instructions, national safety rules for
the prevention of accidents as well as any internal rules concerning work,
operating- and safety measures from the Owner/Manager's side, must be
observed.

2.6 Safety measures for the Owner/Manager resp. Operator

If the SJE is to be subjected to substances for which its materials cannot
be defined exactly, then a material durability test must be carried out at site
before the SJE is put into operation.

This will prevent material damage at a later date and possible damages to
the environment resp. injuries to persons as a result thereof.

When applicable, the SJE is to be provided with sound insulation at
job-site for the prevention of damage to the hearing system - see Item 5
(Operating data) and the Data Sheet for Noise Emission Values.

Depending on the SJE's wall temperatures, the apparatus should be
insulated at site against heat radiation and for contact protection. The above
mentioned sound insulation serves also as such protection.

2.7 Directions for safety precautions during maintenance and servicing

The Owner/Manager must take care that all maintenance and service jobs
are carried out solely by authorised and qualified personnel. Furthermore, he
must ascertain that the personnel concerned has acquired sufficient
knowledge by studying the operating instructions very carefully.

On principle,

- in cases where the SJE has been subjected to aggressive substances -
that it has been decontaminated/rinsed out and cleared for further activi-
ties before dismantling and maintenance jobs take place!

Rules governing waste disposal and environmental protection must be
observed at all times.

- dismantling and maintenance jobs are not to be carried out until the SJE -
working under excess pressure and sometimes at high temperatures -
has been,

- taken out of operation,
- pressure in the system reduced,
- and the SJE - where applicable - has cooled down, drained off and -
see above - has been decontaminated/cleared for further activities,

thereby paying strict attention to the procedures as given under
Items 7.3 (Shut-down) and 10.0 (Maintenance).

Observation of the above points will help to avoid injuries to persons,
i.e. burns/scalds, with aggressive substances also acid burns, as well as
damages to the apparatus/plant.

On completing such jobs, any safety protection devices in use must be
reassembled immediately, checked through and set to operate.

Re-commissioning to take place according to Item 7.1 (Commissioning).

5.0 Operating Data, Noise Emission Values

5.1 The design point and the operating data have been given in the
characteristic curve(s) resp. in the operating data sheet - see annex(es).

Note: All operating data pressures refer to the SJE's flange level.

Symbols we have used:

MTR = Motive steam flow (kg/h)
PTR = Motive steam pressure (abs.) (bar)
TTR = Motive steam temperature (C)

MS = Suction flow (kg/h)
PS = Suction pressure (abs.) (bar)
TS = Suction flow temperature (C)

MD = Mixed flow (kg/h)
PD = Mixed flow pressure (abs.) (bar)
TD = Mixed flow temperature (C)

5.2 Noise emission values are given in the enclosed data sheet for noise
emission values.
To prevent undue noise/hearing damage we recommend taking respective
noise abatement measures in accordance with legal/corresponding rules &
regulations at the site - see here also the information under Item 2.6 (Safety
precautions, Insulation). If necessary, the personnel concerned should wear
earplugs to protect their hearing.

6.0 Fitting position, Dimensions, Connections, Assembly

6.1 There are no special instructions concerning the fitting position as the
fitting position of such ejectors does not influence their functioning.
However, take care that no condensate can collect in the head of the SJE
when it is at standstill otherwise complications could occur when putting it
back into operation at a later time.

6.2 Dimensions and connections - see Technical Data Sheet resp.
Table of Dimensions.

6.3 Before assembling the SJE, please ensure that the connecting pipelines
have been cleaned thoroughly.
Remove any rust protection applied previously to the flange sealing surfaces.
See here and observe Item 10.4.3 (Maintenance)!

6.4 The approved rules of engineering are to be observed when fitting/
assembling the SJE - see here also Item 2.5 under the heading
"Safety precautions".
Qualified personnel is a prerequisite for assembling the SJE.

Especial care is to be taken

- that the correct flow directions acc. to the Technical Data Sheet resp.
Table of Dimensions - marked by arrows - are observed,

- that the supply and discharge lines do not introduce any forces or
moments,

- that clogging by welding globules, sealing residues or the like cannot
occur.

Furthermore, pay attention that:

6.5.1 All gaskets are seated concentrically and do not narrow the flow cross-
sections.

6.5.2 When installing the motive steam line please take care that the motive steam
reaches the motive nozzle in a dry condition. Wet motive steam will cause
premature wear in the motive nozzle and also in the diffuser of the SJE and
this will interfere considerably with an efficient performance.

The motive steam line should be installed at least in the same nominal width
as prescribed by the SJE.

If the motive steam is wet, then it has to be dried. We recommend the job-
site installation of a droplet separator (steam strainer with drainage) in the
motive steam line.

Furthermore, a partial condensation of the steam should be prevented
by the installation of short pipelines after the droplet separator (steam strain-
er with drainage) - if this has been installed - and also by insulating these
pipelines.

The withdrawal connection for motive steam must be situated at the top of
the main steam line to prevent condensate from being carried over.

6.5.3 The suction- and mixed-flow lines should be installed in the same nominal
width as the SJE - see also Technical Data Sheet resp. Table of Dimen-
sions.

Too narrow a pipeline will lead to increased pressure losses.

6.6 The shut-off device for the motive steam can be situated at the most
convenient point for handling, but not too far away from the SJE to assure
that the specified minimum pressure can be adjusted just before inlet to the
motive nozzle.

6.7 A pressure gauge to be provided at job-site is necessary to adjust the
required minimum pressure for motive steam. This gauge must be installed
between the shut-off device and the SJE. It is advisable to have this instru-
ment calibrated from time to time.

6.8 The SJE can be subjected to an operational test before it is finally installed.
This test can be carried out within the test scope for the whole unit. Proceed
here according to Item 7.1 (Commissioning).

6.9 Retighten screws on previously assembled connections and again after first
commissioning.

6.10 This SJE can be operated out of doors.

When the weather is cold and frosty or if the SJE is to be shut down over a
longer period of time, please proceed according to Item 7.3.4 (Shut-down).

6.11 Parts made of C-Steel/GGG-40 have been provided with a shop coat of
paint.

Additional protective measures are necessary at job-site if further corrosive
influences are to be avoided.

7.0 Commissioning, Operation, Shut-down
only by suitably qualified personnel and in accordance with Items 2.2 and
2.5 (Safety precautions) as well as the following Items 7.1...7.3!

7.1 Commissioning

7.1.1 ATTENTION !

Before first commissioning it is important to ascertain that all connecting
pipelines are in a clean condition, especially the motive steam line and
above all, in the area between the droplet separator (steam strainer with
drainage) and motive nozzle. Foreign objects (scale, welding globules and
the like) can clog the nozzle.

Before commissioning takes place, check that the connections are leak-proof.

A further prerequisite is that the SJE may only be activated when it is in
a properly operable condition together with resp. safety- & protection
devices - as far as these have been installed.

7.1.2 At first, all shut-off devices in the supply- and discharge lines must remain
closed.

7.1.3 If a shut-off device has been installed in the mixed flow line (at connection
point DNG), then this device must be opened up first of all before the com-
missioning starts.

If this particular shut-off device is not opened up first, then motive steam can
flow back through suction connection DNS and can so cause damage to the
product or to the system itself.

ATTENTION: The danger thereby is, that the mechanical limiting values
- see Item 2.9 - could be exceeded thereby resulting in
injuries to persons resp. damages to the environment.

7.1.4 Drain the motive steam line (at connection point DNT) thoroughly by means
of the drainage device (e.g. droplet separator - steam strainer with drainage)
until the white vapour trail disappears. In the case of saturated steam, leave
the shut-off device open a little!

7.1.5 Now, and only now, open up the shut-off device in the motive steam line.

Pay attention here that the motive steam pressure PTR as given under Item
5.1 (Operating Data) is available immediately at the entrance to the SJE.

ATTENTION: The allowable working pressure given together with the
allowable working temperature in the Technical Data Sheet
resp. Operating Data Sheet -see annex - must not be
exceeded - see Item 2.9 under the heading "Safety precau-
tions"!

Finally, open up the shut-off device in the suction line.

7.1.6 Adjust the shut-off device in the motive steam line accordingly, if this should
be necessary.

7.1.7 All screwed connections must be re-tightened after first commissioning.

7.2 Operation

7.2.1 During operation pay attention to and supervise the operating data
according to Item 5.1.

The allowable working pressure - given in the Technical Data Sheet
resp. Table of Dimensions - see annex
together with the allowable working temperature - may not be exceeded
- see Item 2.9 under the heading "Safety precautions"!

7.2.2 If the SJE is not operating correctly, proceed immediately with
shut-down according to the following Item 7.3 (Shut-down)!

7.3 Shut-down

ATTENTION !

The shut-down procedure as given below must be followed implicitly step by
step.

If these instructions are not followed correctly, steam could flow back into the
suction line and possibly cause damage.

7.3.1 First of all, close the shut-off device (if installed) in the suction line.

7.3.2 Then close the shut-off devices for the motive steam.

7.3.3 On principle, any shut-off device in the discharge line is to be closed last of
all.

7.3.4 At places open to the weather/subject to frost it is imperative to drain the
SJE and the job-site installed supply- and discharge lines thoroughly (possi-
ble condensate build-up!) -
see Items 10.0...10.3 (Maintenance - Pressure reduction, Cooling down
resp. also Decontamination/Rinsing).

For longer periods of shut-down we also recommend a draining of the
apparatus as described above.

8.0 Malfunctions and their sources

ATTENTION !

For reasons of security, dismantling the SJE resp. the motive nozzle
is to be carried out only

- in accordance with the instructions for safe working - Item 2.5 -,

- after shut-down according to Item 7.3 (Shut-down),

- after reduction of the excess pressure and after the SJE has cooled down
resp. has been drained off. Please observe
Item 2.7 of the safety precautions and the following paragraph
of this Item 8.0.

Be especially careful if the SJE has been in contact with aggressive/noxious
substances. Do not dismantle until the SJE has been decontaminated/rinsed
off and released for further handling - see Items 10.1...10.4.2 (Maintenance).

Material damages could be the result if these instructions are not followed.

9.0 Procuring spare parts, parts subject to wear

As the SJE has been designed and manufactured especially to your needs,
any spare parts required will also have to be manufactured individually.
This requires a certain amount of time.

Parts subject to wear are -

the motive nozzle
or motive nozzle with welded steam chest resp.
and the gaskets belonging to it.
We recommend that you place an order for the above mentioned parts as
spares in good time.
When ordering spares it is most important to state the numbers punched into
the motive nozzle and other parts of the SJE and the Item Nos. as given in
the Technical Data Sheet resp. the Table of Dimensions.

10.0 Maintenance

Regular maintenance of the SJE serves to increase its working life and to
ensure its proper functioning.
The intervals between maintenance depend on the operating conditions.
However, maintenance should take place at least once a year
after shutting the SJE down in accordance with Item 7.3 (Shut-down) with due
consideration being given to the safety precautions - see Item 2.5 - and espe-
cially to the following Items 10.1 and 10.2.

Non-observance can lead to material damages, maybe also damages to the
environment resp. injuries to persons!
Maintenance of the SJE can also be carried out during the course of a sys-
tem inspection.

10.1 Relieve the SJE of pressure by a careful and slow opening of the fittings
provided for this action at job-site.

In the event that the SJE has been in contact with aggressive/noxious
substances, the Owner/Manager is responsible for measures to ensure
that the personnel does not come into contact with the liquid and can-
not inhale vapours/gases.
The rules and regulations concerning waste disposal and environmen-
tal protection are to be observed at all times.

10.2 In such cases where the SJE has been in contact with aggressive/noxious
substances it is imperative to decontaminate/rinse it down and then release
for handling before further jobs are undertaken.

10.3 Further jobs should not be carried out until the SJE has cooled down and is
without pressure.

Any necessary drainage can be effected by opening the fittings provided for
this action resp. by loosening the flange connections to let the condense wa-
ter drain off.

The rules and regulations concerning waste disposal and environmental pro-
tection are to be observed at all times.

10.4.1 Removing the motive nozzle

Detach motive steam line from connection DNT, detach nuts on steam chest,
dismantle the steam chest and then remove the motive nozzle resp. the
steam chest with welded motive nozzle.
First of all, inspect the motive nozzle for fouling as well as for wear, then, by
looking through the free opening in the SJE head, inspect the inner surfaces
of the SJE for fouling resp. for wear and clean if required - see the following
Item 10.4.3. If necessary, replace worn out part.

10.4.2 Removing/Dismantling the SJE

When required, remove the whole SJE (detach corresponding flange con-
nections to the supply lines) and maybe also dismantle the apparatus, i.e.,
detach nuts, unscrew steam chest. Dismantle motive nozzle or steam chest
with welded motive nozzle respectively, see Item 10.4.1.
Then detach head from mixing passage/diffuser if they are screwed and not
welded together.
Then inspect the parts for fouling resp. for wear - see following Item 10.4.3.
Replace worn out parts.

10.4.3 Depending on the circumstances cleaning can be effected by rinsing out
with water, with a chemical agent or by mechanical means.

ATTENTION !
Pay attention to the instructions on how to use the cleansing agent and
solvent and on how to prevent accidents.
Furthermore, the rules and regulations concerning waste disposal and
environmental protection are to be observed.
The cleansing agent used during this treatment must not be able to attack
the materials of the SJE (given in the Technical Data Sheet resp. Table of
Dimensions) or corrode the surfaces.
After treatment has finished, rinse out thoroughly with water.
Here too, please observe the rules and regulations governing waste disposal
and environmental protection.

10.5 Before re-assembly, clean the sealing surfaces - see preceding Item 10.4.3
(sealing surfaces should not be damaged) - and

when reassembling, use new gaskets,
screw head (if not welded together with mixing passage/ diffuser) and mixing
passage/diffuser together using a new gasket.
Set motive nozzle into the head using a new gasket and put the steam chest
on the head using a new gasket and bolt together with screws.

If the motive nozzle is welded with the steam chest, set the latter into the
head using a new gasket and bolt together with screws.

If necessary, replace worn out parts. When doing so, observe Items 6.0 (Fit-
ting position...Assembly) and 2.0 (Safety measures).

Mount the SJE using new gaskets for the flange connections.

Now we recommend checking over all SJE flange connections to see that
they are leak-proof.

Immediately after completing maintenance jobs on the SJE, re-install
any safety- resp. protective devices, check them through and reset for
operation.
