NURSING STANDARDS ON IV PRACTICE

PHILOSOPHY
ANSAP envisions itself to be a cohesive, pro-active,
professional association, committed to excellence in
nursing
It believes that safe and quality nursing care to
patients is the primary responsibility of nurses
It believes that those who practice IVT nursing are
only those RNs who are adequately trained and
have completed the training requirements in the IVT
Training Program for Nurses as prescribed by ANSAP,
based on PRC-BON Res. No. 08 series 1994, in
compliance with 1991 RA 7164, otherwise known as
the Phil. Nursing Act of 1991, Art V sec 27
It believes that its mission is fulfilled when all the IVT
nurses are proficient and competent in all clinical
aspects of IVT

ANSAP NURSING STANDARDS on IV PRACTICE
IVT insertion of a needle or catheter/ cannula into
a vein, based on the physicians written prescription

SCOPE of PRACTICE

A. Role Definition the IV nurses are RNs committed to
ensure the safety of all patients receiving IVT

B. Description of practice
1. Ethicolegal implications ANSAP, inc. upholds
quality nursing practice and is going to continue
with the IV training for the following reasons
1.1 Nursing curriculum does not provide in-
depth training in parenteral IV drug
administration
1.2 The nurse administrator has the command
responsibility for the whole nursing practice
in the health care facility
1.3 Globally, the IVT certification is a
mandatory rqt for the nurse practitioner
1.4 IVT is voluntary, only those nurses who are
adequately trained and have completed the
training rqts in the IVT program for nurses
as prescribed by ANSAP will be issued an IV
Certificate of training and IVT card of ANSAP

2. Basis of Practice
2.1 Legal therapeutic prescription of a licensed
physician
2.2 thorough knowledge of the vascular system,
interrelatedness of the body system with
proficiency in the skill of IV therapy
2.3 Recognition of holistic approach to patient
care
2.4 collaboration with members of the health
care team
2.5 Net working and linkages with the external
envt
2.6 individual professional accountability
2.7 Utilization of the nursing process APIE

3. Clinical Skills
The IVT nurses shall be proficient and
competent in all clinical aspects of the IVT

4. Procedures
a. carry out physicians prescription for IVT
b. Perform peripheral venipunture
c. based on the physicians prescription,
prepare, initiate, monitor, and terminate
IVT
d. determine solution and medication
incompatibilities
e. change IV site, tubings, dressings, according
to IVT standards
f. Establish flow rates of solutions,
medications, blood and blood components
as prescribed
g. proficient technical ability in the use, care,
maintenance and evaluation of IV
equipment
h. nursing mgmt of patients receiving IV
therapy and peripheral/ central/ parenteral
nutrition in various set ups
i. adherence to established infection control
practices
j. observation and assessment of all adverse
reactions
k. appropriate documentation relevant to the
preparation, administration, termination of
all forms of IVT

5. Indications of IVT
a. Maintain hydration and/ or correct
dehydration in patients unable to tolerate
sufficient volumes of oral fluid/ medications
b. parenteral nutrition
c. administration of drugs
d. transfusion of blood or blood components

6. Contraindications
Administration of irritant fluids or drugs through
peripheral access
