Medical
co-response program

SHANNON LECLAIR

A new medical co-response program

between Alberta Health Services (AHS)
EMS and rural firefighting associations
could see improved medical service in
rural areas.
It was in 2009 when AHS took control of EMS services for the province.
In order to maintain the level of care
AHS began offering medical direction
for first responders in addition to EMS.
Judy Unsworth, fire and emergency
management coordinator for Wheatland County said firefighters have always provided medical assistance to
the customers in the area but have also
enrolled in the program with the Alberta Health Services EMS division.
It is a specific program that were
enrolled in that our first responders,
fire crews, are able to provide medical
assistance in medical emergencies. So
that could be someone having a cardiac
arrest at home, or it could be at a motor
vehicle accident, said Unsworth.
It offers our responders support and
training. The province doesnt pay for
the training; the fire departments themselves are paying for that. They currently do it anyway, so this is just a more
formalized process.
The fire crews will be able to deliver standard first aid and level C CPR
or EMR level care depending on their
training. They will also be supervised
by a medical director, who will offer
tips and suggestions where needed on
patient care reports.
The province is going to support the
program but only in as far as they will
exchange equipment, said Unsworth,
so if a firefighter were to use a tensor
bandage, when the ambulance comes
they will give one back to the firefighter.
The EMR training would cost approximately $2,500 for the first year and
$500 each year after that to maintain
registration per firefighter. The cost for
the standard first aid course is $145 for
two days through St. Johns Ambulance
and includes CPR C and AED.

Park fun!
Every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. kids and their parents gather in Kinsmen Park for Mother Goose in
the Park. Each week is themed and the kids participate in reading, singing, crafts and activities. On
July 23 Paul Thomas was at the park making balloon animals for the kids. LJ McCullough, 2 (green
striped shirt), and Timbree Desmet, 2 (pink), along with their fellow Mother Goose in the Park friends
had fun running under the parachute.

Vehicle pricing is now easier to understand because all our

awareness we want people

to know that should someone in your family in the
near future perhaps want to
donate things, we have a secure storage that we can start
inventorying and letting people know that they can start
donating if they choose, said
Fair.
On the premise that if
something doesnt happen
with the museum committee
the articles are returned right
back to the family. I know
there are probably a lot of
things sitting out that people wish they could just do
something with them, said
Stockwell.
Councillor Bob Sobol said
he is little skeptical about
museums because he has
been in a lot of towns where
they arent successful.
But you guys are going
about this differently and
your plans are really solid,
and I love the enthusiasm,
but more so I love the direction youre taking on this, I
completely, completely support you in this, said Sobol.
The committees plan is
to become set up as a society and foundation, obtain a
charitable number to be able
to give out tax receipts, and
set up a board of directors.
Fair said the committee has excellent guidelines
from Museum Alberta about
setting up a museum in the
community, and they have
wonderful resources and
a workbook that will help
guide them on what they
need to do.
As artifacts are donated
they will be cataloged and
placed into storage until such
time as the actual physical
museum is ready to open its
doors.

they dont have jurisdiction

over the villages, so that will
be something the villages
will decide on, said Unsworth.
Its something the fire departments have wanted to
participate in and something
the province has been trying
to lead and until very recently they didnt actually have
a name for the program or
anyway to deliver it.
The conversation was
brought to council in early
July for discussion. At this
time it is not known which
county communities and fire
halls will opt into the program.

All of the fire associations
in the province will decide if
they want their members to

Wheatland County council has decided they would

It was in 1984 that the

Klaiber family created the
plans for Strathmore Park.
The plan was to build upon
the towns rich heritage of
the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) demonstration
and supply farm, which put
Strathmore on the map from
1908 to 1943.
We feel that to establish a
museum as part of a larger
tourism concept which portrays the extent of Strathmores history would be of
great benefit, said Fair.
The committee discussed
the possibility of a replicated
main street that would become home to any remaining
local heritage buildings, and
perhaps appropriate commercial enterprises, a farmers
market and other attractions
that would supplement the
heritage theme.
The towns future expansion plans for east of the
industrial district are plans
that the committee hopes to
coordinate with. They would
to get public input on the vision process and plan to create marketing strategies that
help spread public awareness throughout the wider
community. A Needs Assessment is vital to setting the
direction.
We realize this is a large
and expensive undertaking,
and that the Klaiber property and the CPR barn are
not presently serviced by
the towns utilities. Also the
rerouting of the number 1
highway will impact access
to that property, said Fair.
Grant Klaiber has donated
a Sea-Can for the committee
to be able to store artifacts
as they begin the processes
planned to become a society.

Town judged
on beautification
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The Communities in Bloom (CIB) judges came through
Strathmore on July 25 to see how the town compares to other Bloom communities. Linda Tomlinson and Brenda Isaak
Takao were the two judges taking the tour with CIB Chair
Melody Wilson.
We evaluate for six different categories, one is tidiness,
were going to look at garbage, were going to look at litter,
were going to look at weeds, how everything is cared for,
said Tomlinson.
The judges also look at heritage conservation, environment, landscape, floral and urban forests within the community.
Then in each one of those categories we look at community involvement to see how the businesses, how the municipality and how the residents are involved in all those areas,
said Isaak Takao, who is in her third year of judging.
Tomlinson has been a CIB judge since 2007, and has had
the opportunity to judge Strathmore a couple of times over
the years, and see the changes made. She said there have
been big differences, like with the Birth Forest and how it
has grown.
On Sept. 13 it will be announced at a provincial event how
each community did, and how many blooms they receive for
the year on a scale of one to five.
CIB has been in Strathmore since 2005 when resident Robert Breitwieser brought it to the community. He stepped back
from the chair role last year, passing the torch on to Wilson.
CIB, according to their mandate, is a non-profit organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national program, with focus on
enhancing green spaces in communities.
Currently there are 10 volunteers who are part of the
board.

ger, better projects, said Wilson.

We work on donations and fundraising so the more bodies we have the more (we can do).
The level of commitment is not high, and being a part of
CIB means you get to help see the community bloom, so to
speak. During the winter months there may be a meeting or
two, and in the spring things begin to pick up.
In the spring time there are a few planting bees, work
bees to say build the garden. Well do a blitz on the Saturday
and usually we get 10 to 12 people out including kids and
wives and husbands and usually we can get a project done,
said Wilson.
There are times when some of the work is contracted out
to finish bigger projects that maybe they cant do or certain
things need to be done. Wilson said CIB is trying to do more
weekend blitzes to get more people out, but then they need
to get more projects to be able to do that.
My hope, I would just like to see (us) bringing in some
younger people. I think having younger families involved
just builds a better community, yes you can all be friends on
Facebook but building a community, the friendship bonds
(are invaluable), said Wilson.
Anyone with an interest in gardening and beautifying the
community is encouraged to volunteer with Communities in
Bloom and can get started by contacting Melody Wilson at
melody@peapatch.ca.

New communication towers imminent

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

At the July 2 Wheatland County Council meeting, Rogers
Communications made a presentation to council about new
towers planned for the county. The approving authority for
the proposed towers is Industry Canada, but Carol Robinson,
municipal relations specialist for Rogers said they try to work
collectively with municipalities and consult with them, and
the public in many cases.
We have identified many gaps in rural Alberta, we want to
ensure that our rural customers experience the same quality
of service as our city customers, said Robinson in an email
interview.
Our priority is to ensure that coverage is seamless across
the county, not only for enjoyment of wireless device usage,
but for access to emergency services as well.
One of the main concerns brought up when discussing new
towers is that of health and safety. Robinson said that is something that is also a top priority for Rogers Communications.

We are regulated by Industry Canada and Health Canada,

they provide the guidelines to ensure that our sites are safe,
said Robinson.
We adhere to a study called Safety Codes 6, it outlines
the safe exposure from RF (radio frequency). We are typically
99 per cent below the maximum allowable to ensure that if
safety is questioned, we exceed the safety requirement.
Robinson said Rogers tries to make an effort not to place a
tower in a residential area, but said at times it may be necessary, if the demand is coming from those areas. Rogers uses
taller towers in rural areas the maximum height is 107m- to
be able to cover a larger range and increased capacity.
Towers are not only built for coverage, but capacity. If a lot
of users are drawing from one tower, it may mean a second
tower is required to assist with capacity. Circumstances vary
all over Alberta, said Robinson.
For now the installation of new towers is still a while away.
The meeting with the county was to inform council about the
plans for new towers, and discuss potential sites and address
concerns.

PORTABLE ISLANDS

The first phase of the Downtown revitalization strategy is

well underway. Two portable islands have been constructed
and installed along Second Avenue as a pilot project. The
islands will be removed for the winter season to facilitate snow
removal.
In the future, the islands will be capable of being moved to different locations in the Downtown Central Zone of the Overlay
Bylaw, and will be wheelchair accessible. For this year, the islands will remain in the current locations for the entire summer
and fall season. This will give the Downtown Design Review
Committee the ability to monitor the pilot project for any issues
that need to be resolved prior to installation next spring.
When the Downtown Design Review Committee selected the
locations for the Portable Islands, it was determined that Second Avenue is currently the most walkable part of the downtown. The Portable Islands are for sitting, meeting people
and possible enjoying a coffee or lunch, and therefore it was
considered appropriate to locate the islands near eating and
drinking establishments. The island on the north side of Second Avenue is adjacent to a bakery that serves light lunches
and beverages. While there are eating and drinking establishments on the south side of Second Avenue between Lakeside
and Second Street, the Heritage Square currently provides
a lovely sitting area, as well as the green space between the
Credit Union and the Theatre on the north side. The location
on Second Avenue between Second and Third Street was
selected due to its proximity to the Co-op, which has a deli,
and people could purchase lunches or beverages and sit on the
Portable Island. Sunny locations were selected to ensure that
the islands get the most sun over the May to October period.
In addition, it was determined that since parking stalls would
be eliminated to accommodate the patios, locations that had
significant on or off street parking would be the best options.
This is the first year for the Portable Islands. As previously
mentioned, they are portable and may be sited in different
locations next year. It is hoped that the islands get a lot of use
and are enjoyed by all.
We are also looking for feedback and suggestions for improvement from the public. We are hoping to continuously improve
and revitalize the entire Downtown area over the next few
years!
Downtown Design Review Committee
The Downtown Design Review Committee consists of two
Councillors - Bob Sobol and Pat Fule, two staff members - Linda
Nelson and Betty Ann Fountain, one member from the Strathmore Regional Arts Collective - Brandy Hebbes, 3 citizens at
large Glenn Freeland, Robert Breitwieser, Telisa Tebbutt, and
the Towns Planning Consultant - Pat Maloney

The file as noted above can be viewed at the Town Office during regular
business hours. The permit will be issued following the lapse of the appeal period.
Any person wishing to appeal this decision must submit their appeal no
later than 4:30 pm on August 8, 2014. Appeals must be in writing, accompanied by the $100.00 fee and submitted to the Secretary, Subdivision

A Memorandum of Understanding was created between
the Youth Club of Strathmore and the town, and was officially accepted at the July 16 meeting.
The Youth Club of Strathmore first got its beginnings in
2009, starting with summer camps under the guidance of
the Airdrie Boys and Girls Club. In 2010 negotiations began
with the town for the building the club is currently in. They
officially opened the doors in 2012. As each year goes by the
success of the club rises in the form of increased numbers
and programming.
We try and do a best practice of two staff in the building,
not necessarily in one program, but to have two people in
the building. Our ratios for all of our programs are one to
10, said Shannon Zieman, program director for the Youth
Club.
We really have seen a lot of growth, kind of at the point
right now where were looking at fall and if we expand the
programming I dont have the staff right now to cover that.
The number of kids who using the programs offered has
been steadily increasing over the years. The summer camps
have gone from 17 kids per week in 2012, to 35 to 40 this
year.
The lunch program that runs over the school year saw 15
kids per day on Tuesday and Thursdays during 2012, and
this year the club was capping out, and selling out, at 35-40
lunches on those same days.
The MOU outlines details on the agreement between the
town and the Youth Club. The town provides an annual
budget of $142,000, and within that they must maintain the
comprehensive or commercial general liability insurance,
and any other insurance coverage, which may be reasonably
required by the town.

Chucks come to town

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Stampede
is set to get under way this
weekend at the Strathmore
and District Agricultural
grounds and there will be
plenty of excitement to go
around.
The chuckwagon event is
popular with rodeo enthusiasts and will surely provide
entertainment on a nightly
basis during the Stampede.
A couple of familiar riders
will be returning to the competition, Kelly Sutherland
and Jason Glass. Sutherland
will be seeking a sixth victory at the Strathmore Stampede.
Well hopefully I will have
a strong (showing) in Strathmore. I think I was fifth here
at the last one and I hope to
improve and win it this year,
said Sutherland.
In order to be successful at
these Stampede events, the
participants need some luck
to be on their side to earn a
victory.
You need a little bit of a
break and some luck once in
a while and things will work
out, said Sutherland.
Riders seem to like this
event on the circuit because
there is always lots of support for the chuckwagons.
I think there is always

strong crowds for their

chuckwagon racing and the
track is a good race track
much like the Calgary Stampede, said Sutherland. The
competition will be tough
because a lot of guys like
Rick Fraser have won the last
two events. Jason Glass and
my brother Kirk are one and
two in the world standings,
so it will be a tough field.
Glass, who is having an
exceptional year on tour being the #1 rider in the association, wants perfect conditions on the track for some
good races.
I expect to have a good
weekend, my horses are
healthy and running strong.
There are a lot of nice horses
coming to town and great
drivers, it will be a great
competition, said Glass.
Glass is looking to add a
second Strathmore chuckwagon title to his resume
as he has had some strong
showings here.
To anyone that has not
been out to a chuckwagon
race, they are really missing
out on something unique,
powerful and a lot of beautiful horses, said Glass.
Jason Glass would like to
extend a big thank you to
his main sponsor, MJs Water
Hauling, in Strathmore for all
the support he has received
throughout his career.

Firearms licensing back

to common sense
FROM THE OFFICE OF KEVIN SORENSON

The Honourable Kevin Sorenson, Minister of
State (Finance) and Member of Parliament for
Crowfoot, welcomed the coming-into-force of an
expanded Order Declaring an Amnesty Period
(2014). This Order will ensure that law-abiding
owners of CZ 858 or Swiss Arms family of rifles are
now able to fully use their property, announced
the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public
Safety and Emergency Preparedness.
When Parliament reconvenes in September, the
Conservative Government will also table the Common Sense Firearms Licensing Act. The Bill will:
Merge the Possession Only License (POL) and
the Possession and Acquisition License (PAL);
Restrict the ability of Chief Firearms Officers
to make arbitrary decisions;
Create a grace period at the end of the fiveyear licence to stop people from immediately becoming criminalized for paperwork errors;
End needless paperwork around Authoriza-

tions to Transport by making them a condition of

a license;
Require mandatory firearms safety courses for
first-time gun owners; and
Strengthen firearms prohibitions for those
who are convicted of domestic violence offences.
The amnesty for law-abiding owners of the CZ
858 or Swiss Arms family of rifles will expire on
Mar. 14, 2016. The Order Declaring an Amnesty
Period (2014) will allow owners of the impacted
firearms to use their property. Intended amendments to the Firearms Act and Criminal Code
would streamline licensing and eliminate red tape
for law-abiding firearms owners.
These measures would streamline licensing
and eliminate needless red tape for law-abiding
gun owners, said Minister Sorenson. It would
also take steps to ensure that those convicted of
domestic violence offences can be banned from
owning firearms. Our Government will continue
to help keep the public safe, through common
sense policies.

Arizona, take off your rainbow shades

(thanks Mark Lindsay!)
PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
So, I decided to splurge for my family this week. I
mean, Im no Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, but I
thought they deserved to be spoiled. Money was not
going to be an obstacle. No sir, I looked at all the
choices, and picked three ply toilet paper!
Yep, maybe it was little extravagant, but heck, they
deserve it, and this way, I get to be the generous provider! It took a while to select just the right brand,
what with all the designer labels, number of sheets per
roll, and the terminology!
I was reading them all over (probably looking pretty
creepy in the Co-op, too!). One package even had the
descriptive phrase that announced its paper was made
with Dura-Clean!
What the heck Dura-Clean is, I dont know, but it
sounded pretty impressive. However, I went with delicate softness instead! It reminded me of an advertising
slogan I saw for an Australian toilet paper company
that said the toilet tissue that cares for Downunder!
Now, my whole family will know how much I care for
their comfort!
But enough of that, Im a bit down this week. Deb
and I went to Arizona for 10 days at the start of July. I
know, youre thinking what idiots go to Phoenix in
the heat of the summer. Its just that summer is when
we have a lot of time, and hey, its a dry heat!
Im down because on July 3, I saw my first Back
to School commercial July 3! Oh sure, I get that
theres no sympathy for a teacher who grumbles about
this, but July 3? To regular people (insert the word
normal), it would be worse than seeing snow tire
commercials now! The only thing that made me feel
better, was that in the U.S., the kids get out in late May,
and go back earlier. Based on one blonde waitress we
had there, the U.S. kids really should be in school as
much as possible!
Deb and I were lucky enough to stay at the home of
Brennens girlfriends parents. We had a beautiful place
with our own pool, and a van to sightsee, or when it
comes to Deb, shop! We stopped in at a lounge, and
this is where the American Education system came
into doubt. Im sorry to say our waitress was a young
blonde, and we were talking with her about Phoenix,

its attractions, and the shopping district.

Then Deb asked her the question, what is this area
called? Without missing a beat, our gal said, the bar.
The bar hmmm the U.S. had a slogan about its
Education plan that stated, No Child Left Behind.
Well, I can tell you that this one was!
We also discovered that we were in Phoenix during
their monsoon season! Now, to me, monsoons mean
wild rainstorms with tons of wind, and destruction. To
Arizonians (is that a word?) a monsoon is heavy rain
and the odd dust storm. In fact, on one of our drives
back from Sedona, we were humming back along the
Interstate with our wipers on the fast setting, only
to see car after car, pulled over in the shoulder. There
were so many, they really stood out. When we asked
our hosts about it, they said that people in Phoenix
arent used to driving in heavy rain. Huh, I thought
they really need to see our blizzards. Then, theyd
really know why someone has to pull over, and heck,
we still dont even do that very often!
We did have great, sunny weather, and even though
Im terrible in water, I enjoyed the pool. Deb got a little carried away, and told me to take off my shirt! She
said, I might as well pretend that I have a pool boy!
Just then I saw my 53 year old reflection in the window I was not a pool boy! Shes a keeper though, if
shed say that to me. I did a few secret push ups, and
did the best pool boy imitation I could!
Gee, Mrs. Fule, it sure is hot out here maybe I
could just come in and cool off a bit? What, your husbands not home, and youre not sure? (Im kidding,
dont get creeped out I never said that!)
I did notice this place had great desert landscaping,
except for this one cactus. It was pretty erect, and had
one small, round protuberance at the bottom! I know
this is bad, but all I could think of, was Lance Armstrong! I actually felt a little insignificant standing near
it! I was just really glad it doesnt get cold in Arizona
in summer!

It is of true significance to
merit where you rate on
the scale of loving people.
Matthew 22:37 tells us that the
whole law is fulfilled in loving
God and loving others as
we love ourselves. We often
rather deal with ourselves and
others by judging behaviors.
Looking down on anothers
failure, especially in areas
where we are strong, is far
too easy.
A proper Christian should...or
shouldnt is a voice often accusing ourselves and others.
I am not negating that we,
as children of the living God,
obey Him. We do, because we
choose to. His grace found us
in our sin and restored us unto
right relation with Father God,
by the spilled blood of His only
Son, Jesus Christ. Romans
5:20 spells it out that where
sin abounds, grace abounds
even more. We understand
who we are in Christ and we
live from thankfulness and
He leads us down the path

It is His unmerited love that
drew us unto Him, in the first
place. Once saved, however,
we seem to lose sight of the
wonder of it all. We continue struggling to merit His
unmerited love and favor.
We hold ourselves to external standards of perfection,

Our self-esteem based on our

Loving God, ourselves and

could share from our place

remains, Where do we rate,

Shoot for the Troops helps veterans

JUSTIN SEWARD

For military families there can be a lot of heartache and emotions being felt while the soldier is
a way on duty.
Upon return to civilian lifestyle, it can be hard
for many to cope with day-to-day life and get
back into the swing of things.
Each year the Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion #10 hosts a Shoot for the Troops fundraising
darts tournament.
This year the Legion donated $3,453 to the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre, which in
turn supports the veterans and those returning

from Afghanistan.
We had 63 dart players, held a silent auction,
a 50/50 draw and the dart players donated their
registration fees and then some to the Calgary
Military Family Resource Centre (C.M.F.R.C), said
Betty Ann Fountain, a member of the Legion.
The C.M.F.R.C is an organization that assists the
veterans as they work their way back into a normal lifestyle.
In over eight years (the Legion) has raised over
$15,000 and donated it to the centre in Calgary,
said Fountain.
The Legion is looking forward to the ninth annual event next year, which will be held on the
first Saturday of May.

Dance the night away with the Wheatland Whirlers

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

If you have never been to a good old-fashioned
barn dance, now is your chance. The Wheatland
Whirlers Square Dance Club is hosting the second
annual barn dance at the Civic Centre on Aug. 13,
and everyone is welcome to come out for the evening.
If you want to come just to listen youre more
than welcome to do that, or to dance. All our dances will be demoed first and then danced so that if
youre a non-dancer you will be able to dance it,
said Claudia Littlefair, a Wheatland Whirlers member.
The night will include some social dances like
waltzes, seven step, polka and much more. The
dances will be kept simple and will be ones that
everyone will be able to do. They will also include
some old-time square dancing.
Littlefair is also one of Strathmores Childrens
Wish Foundation (CWF) event organizers. Any
funds raised from the barn dance will be donated
to the Childrens Wish.
Last year the dance raised approximately $1,700
for CWF through admission, the snack bar and

raffle prizes.
The Wheatland Whirlers are hosting the event,
which will feature the Prairie Mountain Fiddlers
group.
Its a good project in support of the Childrens
Wish Foundation, said Pius Sauverwald, who is
part of the president couple for the Whirlers.
Over the eight years that Littlefair has been involved with the CWF there has been over $100,000
raised to help grant wishes to children and their
families.
It gives hope to the family, because a wish isnt
just for the child, they grant the wish to the family. Its not just a wish, its an important event, so
theres even healing in that, said Littlefair.
There is so much ugliness with disease and
theres so much stress when youre going through
it, and this is something that is about as opposite
as you can get. One thing is so black and the other
thing just sparkles, the wish just sparkles.
Admission for the barn dance is $10 per person,
or $25 per family. It begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre. For tickets contact Claudia Littlefair at
403-934-3900 during the day, or at 403-934-5966
in the evening. Tickets can then be picked up at

Pastor Dawn Nelson

celebrates 25 years
MANNY EVERETT
Times Contributor

What an amazing 25 years it has been
for Pastor Dawn Nelson from Lord of
All Lutheran Church in Strathmore.
Nelson graduated from the Lutheran
Theological Seminary in Saskatoon in
1989 with her Master of Divinity. After
struggling with her calling (originally
as an RN at the Foothills hospital in Calgary) she came to sense that there was
something more that she was called to
do. Nelson came to Strathmores Lord of
All Lutheran Church, February 1, 1994
after serving her first parish in Wadena/
Margo at St. Peters, for five years.
Nelson has seen many changes and
went through the challenges and excitement of a building program with
Lord of All. Church services were held
in a trailer when she came and now
there is a beautiful building that serves
many purposes in the community, including holding AlAnon meetings,
youth events, seniors groups, and a
variety of other churches and services
from the community utilizing the centralized building in the heart of downtown Strathmore.
September of 2012 saw Lord of All
make a move by leaving the (ELCIC)
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada to the NALC (The North American
Lutheran Church) in keeping with Nelsons vocational calling, and also that

HEALTH ADVICE

of the members of the church, to stay

with traditional biblical teaching and
preaching of Gods word in the church
and community.
Marg Boesenkool, a longstanding
member at Lord of All, says, We had
a long phase of interim ministers come
and go for a number of months and it
was a delight when Pastor Dawn accepted the call to be our permanent full
time Pastor. She fit right in with all of us
and has been a delight and a wonderful
support to me and my family over the
years. Pastor Dawn is family.
Town Councillor Pat Fule says of
Nelson, Pastor Dawn is a caring and
empathetic person who strives hard
to bring healing and comfort to those
who need it. She has always held an
important role with Victim Services and
in emergency situations. She knows the
needs of the youth in our community
and brings her compassion to the Youth
Club Board. I absolutely love being on
the board with her. Congratulations on
25 years in ministry.
Pastor Garnet Leach was Pastor
Dawns pastor at Hope Lutheran in Calgary and is pleased to have helped her
discover her calling and delighted in
her faithful service over the years, both
at Lord of All and in the community and
larger Church. Leach was able to preach
at the service this past Sunday and led
Pastor Dawn in renewing her ordination vows during the morning worship.

About 250,000 couples in Canada are trying to
have children but are unsuccessful. Infertility is
defined as an inability to conceive following 12
months of unprotected intercourse. The causes vary
and can be found in either the man or the woman.
Testing can determine the cause and the results can
dictate various alternatives to achieving a successful

SMILE

Carrying a list of all the medications you take is a

good idea. This list should include both prescription
and non-prescription drugs. It can be helpful when
traveling or if you have to see a doctor other than
your own in an emergency situation. Your list will
save time and help you get treatment more quickly.
A survey of the top ten prescribed drugs of 2013
still shows a thyroid replacement drug on top
followed by a drug for reducing cholesterol, four
blood pressure medications, two antidepressants and
one blood thinner. In 10th position this time was a
vitamin D product reflecting the huge interest in the
vitamin in recent years.
If going to the gym isnt your thing and you want
a good aerobic workout, try stair-walking. Start
slowly and gradually increase the number of steps
you go up and down. After a while, take two steps
at a time which is good for your large quadricep
muscles. And if you are in a building with an
elevator, take the steps.
Take charge of your own health and let our
pharmacists be on your health team.

Football players cherish summer games

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Local football players Garrett Getto,
Misi Varga, Koby Halloway and Chevy
Winnipeg had memorable Summer
Games experiences that the athletes
will cherish for a long time.
The Zone 2 team that played in Airdrie went 1-2 in the tournament and fell
short of winning a medal at the event.
The opening game turned out to be a
one-sided contest as the 30-0 win over
Zone 7 indicated a strong effort. However, the second game had a different
outcome as they were defeated 18-6 by
Zone 6.
It was very exciting and I was very
surprised (to make the team), said Gatto.
The experience playing alongside
current and new teammates was a highlight that he will never forget.
It was awesome playing with different kids (and regular teammates), Misi
Vargas, Koby Halloway and Chevy Win-

nipeg, said Gatto.

The exciting part was playing the
games against different teams that I did
not know.
Gatto just plays the sport he loves
and that is football, and while in competition on the field he learned how to
become a better defensive end.
Misi Vargas, like Getto, took in every
moment he could at the games.
I was pretty excited (to get the call)
but also a little bit nervous and started
feeling like oh my gosh, I have to get
ready, said Vargas.
I got to see all the different sports
that were there and I thought that was
great because there were so many different types of athletes.
Volleyball was his favorite alternative
sport to watch at the games, and he is
looking to get on a team next year. Vargas also takes a keen interest in track
and field.
The Zone 2 team finished fourth
place but felt it was a gold medal weekend in their hearts.

Car show winner

The 21st annual Strathmore Fun Runners show and shine was held at Kinsmen Park on July 19. Each year since the passing of their good friend and
fellow car enthusiast Brant Wheeler, members of the Fun Runners wander
the show looking for the car or truck they feel Wheeler would have enjoyed
the most. This year Keith McEwen from Calgary was the recipient of the
Brant Wheeler Memorial Award for his 1972 GMC Sierra Grande.

Poker run goes on

The second annual Ride
Dogs Ride Poker run for the
Calgary Humane Society is
happening this weekend,
starting by Carseland at the
Funny Farm. Everyone is invited to come out and start
the weekend by enjoying the
breakfast, being held from
8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Aug.
2. Breakfast is being offered
by donation, before heading
out on the run. The creator
of the event, Glen Guido
Garland, passed away earlier this year, but his family
knew without a doubt that
they wanted to continue the
event in his legacy.
Glen was a lover of animals. He actually wanted
to have, someday, his own
rescue but he wanted to see
Calgary Humane Society
have a bigger place to have
all their equipment (shelter),
and he wanted to help them
before deciding to go out on
his own, said his wife Diana
Garland.

There was not one animal that didnt like that man,
he could go up to any animal, they could be the worst
animal in the world to the
owner, but to him they were
harmless, and he had to be
the voice to them animals.
Last year over $9,500 was
raised, and the plan this year
is to hopefully more than
double that number. For the
entry fee you get a T-Shirt
honouring Glen himself. The
fee also includes the dinner Saturday night and live
entertainment, and there is
free camping until Aug. 4.
There will be a 50/50 draw,
silent auction items, a show
n shine, and a burn-out pit.
On Sunday, Aug. 3, there
will be a kids carnival with
games, activities, and a dunk
tank. Tickets are $30 at the
door, or can be purchased in
advance for $20 at www.ridedogsride.com online or at
Dice Ladys Deals in Carseland. Marija Shadowstalk,
with special guests Fist Full
of Toes, will provide the live
entertainment.

The theme for the Strathmore Youth Clubs Summer Camp this week was
Water Works, which was seemingly appropriate for their good works Friday fundraiser on July 25. Emily Guenette (l-r), Emily Moch, Jaxsen Shorhen and Quinten Bishop appreciated the help from Mother Nature as they
washed many cars with donations being sent to the Calgary Childrens Hospital Wish Foundation.

#1 Hoops slam dunked

Shantelle Gieck did not feel
there were enough sporting
activities for youth to play in
Strathmore, so she felt obligated to start #1 Hoops back
in 2011.
Additionally, #1 Hoops, a
basketball camp for youth,
has just recently expanded
into two programs. The first
program is for kindergarten
to Grade 3 and the other program is for Grades 4 to 7.
The kindergarten to Grade
3 has been my newest addition to the program and the
enrolment has been overwhelming, said Gieck.
#1 Hoops basketball just
completed their fourth season.
I started the program
back in 2011 in the fall and I
played basketball since I was
in Grade 4, said Gieck. I just
loved the sport and wanted to
share my love for (basketball)
with the other kids.

In many basketball programs, the main focus is scoring, which makes up a small
portion of the game.
That is what I really push
for is the teamwork aspect of
basketball and having respect
for other (coaches, players,
parents and referees) on the
court, said Gieck.
The credit goes to the
coaches in #1 Hoops who
have been incredible, along
with the other volunteers
which have been organizing
the program.
Giecks ultimate goal would
be run the program all-year
round and in the summer
have week-long summer
camps.
I have been getting a lot
of calls throughout the year
when my program will be
running again and unfortunately I need to say I am unsure, said Gieck.
If you would like more
information on #1 Hoops,
please contact Gieck at 403660-3896

57th annual Rockyford Rodeo a muddy affair

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter
Despite the wet weather that caused some very
unique infield conditions, rodeo fans were still entertained by what the cowboys were able to do on the
muddier grounds.
Everything was good, we had those McMorran FMX stunt bikes and we were hoping to have
them perform in front of the grand stand but with
the weather and the safety and the infield being that
muddy (the stunt bikers) were not able to do that,
said Justin Geeraert.
For a small town rodeo, and the cooler weather, the
attendance was inconsistent for most of the weekend

as people flooded through the gates whether it was

rain or shine.
Friday was way down but that was weather related. We were up Saturday on the grounds and then
Sunday were down a little bit, said Geeraert.
Having a wet track proved to be tough for many
riders, but there were no complaints and they rode
on the grounds in the conditions that they were in.
(The riders) said it is what it is and (the conditions)
were tougher on riders and definitely on the livestock
too as it was slippery out there, said Geereart.
Overall, between the parade and the 57th annual
Lions Rockyford Rodeo, the events were a success.
The weekend went well and everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves and a big thanks goes out to the

sponsors and volunteers. If not for them (the event)

would not happen, said Geeraert.

Teen athletes compete in Summer Games

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Eighteen athletes in and
around Strathmore represented Zone 2 for various
sports during the Alberta
Summer Games July 24-27.
The Strathmore Times spoke
to four of them to find out
about their experiences with
their individual sports.
Kaylin Larson, 13, and
Kendal Russell, 14, played
on the basketball team.
My older sister went (before) and I watched her but
it was my first time playing,
said Larson.
It was really fun, it was
different. I have never done
anything like that before so
it was fun.
Russell wasnt sure at first
when she tried out if she
would make the team; she
was nervous and had to wait
anxiously for an hour to find
out she had indeed made the
cut.
I kept thinking out of
all these girls, only 12 are
picked and was I going to be
one of them. I knew I had
given my all at tryouts but
still thought I might not get
picked and had to be prepared for this response, said
Russell.
Then I heard my name
called, everyone watching as
I left the room to meet the
coach. The coach asked me
how I thought I did, I said
I played hard and thought
I did good. He agreed and
said thats why youre on the
team. I was so excited when
I found out I was on the
team, it was such an awesome feeling of accomplishment.
No words even describe
how much fun I had. I got
to spend the weekend with
amazing people and teammates. The crowds were
something I had never experienced in my basketball
career before and it was crazy how loud the gym could
be at times. It was crazy to
see how many athletes there
where. Everyone was so
good; it was a whole new
level of competition. Im sad

we werent able to finish in

the medals but the games
alone were an experience of
a lifetime.
Larsons sentiments about
the experience were similar
to Russells. The amount of
people watching and cheering was unlike anything she
had witnessed before.
The best parts of the
games for both girls were being able to play basketball at
an elite level for their ages,
and meeting so many other
people with shared interests.
I made lots of new friends
and the basketball was really
good, it was at a higher level, said Larson.
I loved the basketball of
course, spending time with
my teammates and just having fun. Everything about the
games was a good time. I got
to know some very amazing
people who I would have
never met if had I not tried
out for the team. I look forward to trying out for Team
Alberta next year, said Russell.
Larson also plays ringette,
softball, and volleyball and
competes in cross-country.
Russell plays on Holy Cross
Collegiates sports teams and
also plays for the Chestermere community basketball
and Shooting Stars Club
Spring Ball.
Steven Soers, 15, was a
part of a bronze medal winning Zone 2 baseball team.
This was his first time at the
event.
It was good, pretty tough
competition. I (was) excited
I was picked for the Games,
said Soers.
The Holy Cross Collegiate
teen participates in almost
all of the school sports, and
said for the Summer Games
he would definitely go back
again if he could because it
was fun.
Rayanne Laycock, 12, took
part in the triathlon portion
of the Summer Games. Her
relay team won the bronze
medal - there wasnt an individual race in her category.
One thing I liked about
the games was meeting so
many different kids from

all over Alberta that enjoy

triathlon as much as I do. I
wasnt crazy about sleeping
on a classroom floor, but it
was part of the whole experience so in the end that was
ok too, said Laycock.
She was excited to start
the race after finding out she
had qualified in June. Her
favourite part of triathlon is
the running part, because if
she loses time on the bike
she can usually catch up
with the run.
Her thoughts on the experience, I will always re-

member the Summer Games

because I had an amazing
coach and teammates, and
because even aside from the
racing, I had so many great
experiences along the way.
Laycock also swims with
the Strathmore Silver Sharks,
runs cross country and track,
and played basketball last
year.
All of the competitors
agreed that it was an experience they will never forget,
and one that they are all glad
they had the opportunity to
participate in.

to go 13 strong and I think at the end
of the year, come provincials that was
our biggest asset, was every girl contributing, said Olson. Every girl (had the

Strathmore swimmers medal

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

Members of Strathmore Silver Sharks Swim Club had
plenty to cheer about, as in
the case of three local swimmers Madison Laycraft, Morgan Hansen and Boris Kuljanin. All three participants
were thrilled to be at the 2014
Summer Games in Airdrie. It
was an experience they will
not forget.
It was so exciting, knowing that all the hours of the
training paid off and all the
hard work was totally worth
it, said Laycraft. She was able
to hit the podium three times
with a gold, silver and bronze.
The experience will never
get better than what she participated in this past weekend.
It was an amazing experience. The team grew so close
and I made many new friends,
it was great doing everything
together, said Laycraft.
Just being in the atmosphere
surrounding
the
games was a pretty surreal
feeling and getting to watch
other athletes competing was
special in itself.
My favorite part was getting to know all the other
Zone 2 swimmers, and being
able to share this experience
with awesome people, friends
and coaches. It was very special receiving a medal for my
400 individual medley and
relays.
It was pretty cool standing
on the podium with my teammates.
The 13-year-old Laycraft
also participates in volleyball,
badminton and track at Langdon school.
As for Morgan Hansen, she
medalled four times as she
got two gold, one silver and

one bronze.
I was delighted to be
knowing that I would be participating in the 2014 Alberta
Summer Games, said Hansen.
Overall
the
Summer
Games was a very exciting
experience, to be a part of
the Zone 2 team with other
swimmers was great, we had
excellent coaches that helped
us along the giving us advice
and supporting us all as a
team.
The 15-year-old Hansens
primary sport is swimming,
and she likes to do as many
school sports as she can.
11-year-old Boris Kuljanin
had multiple second places
en route to seven medals.
Kuljanin liked the fact he was
able to bond with his teammates and to meet other competitors.
Meeting new people and
bonding with the team and
athletes from other zones and
the laughs we shared (was a
highlight for me), said Kuljanin.
When he got the call, Kuljanin could not have been
more thrilled to represent his
zone.
I was literally jumping
with joy and I found out two
of my teammates also made
it, so I was even happier, he
said.

On Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the age of 38 years, Christine

Petovello passed away at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta. She was surrounded by her loving family during her battle with cancer.
Christine will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 12 years, Cory Moore;
her daughter Zayna Carly Petovello Moore; parents Carol Petovello (Lamb) and
Jerry Petovello; brother Devin Petovello; grandmother Irene Petovello (Stonehouse); mother-in-law Lynne Moore (Stanyer), father-in-law Wayne Moore;
sister-in-law Stacy Weibel (Moore); brothers-in-law Clint Ball, Mike Moore,
and Eric Weibel; as well as numerous loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles,
cousins and family friends. Christine was predeceased by her grandparents
Doreen Lamb (Sindell), Neil Lamb and Atelio Petovello. Christine was a loving
mother and a strong woman. To all of those who knew her she was pragmatic
but still maintained a fun-loving spirit. She had a great sense of humor, was
forthright and kind hearted. Christine was born in Cutknife, Saskatchewan on
December 8, 1975. She grew up on a farm outside of Neilburg, Saskatchewan
and completed all of her schooling there. Christine had a love for animals, so
after high school she went to Vermillion, Alberta to become a veterinary technician. She later moved to Calgary, Alberta where she continued her education and attended SAIT. Christine met Cory through mutual friends in Neilburg,
Saskatchewan and within two years they were engaged and were married
on June 29, 2002. They moved to Strathmore, Alberta in 2007 and made the
town their home. Soon afterwards she gave birth to their beautiful daughter,
Zayna. Christine worked at Koch Oil Sands for the past 9 years and she loved
her job. She had touched many lives, and hers will be honored and celebrated
by all of those who were lucky enough to know her. A very warm thank you
goes out to the nurses and doctors of the ICU team at Foothills Hospital who
took such excellent care of Christine. A memorial service was held on Friday,
July 25, 2014 at Hope Community Covenant Church (Strathmore) at 2:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers donations in Christines honor can be made directly to your
local SPCA. To send condolences, please visit Christines obituary at www.
